Everton 1:2 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 09 October 2022

My heart rate clocked at 114BPM on the final whistle. Why can’t we win easy United! Great win.

Considering this was after a Thursday night game, it was a decent performance. But we still look very nervous under the press, especially at the tail end of the second half.

Antony is playing with a sense of freedom and energy which is nice to see.

Good away win tonight against a Everton side that was unbeaten in six games coming into this game and had the lowest amount of goals conceded.

United dominated large portions of that game but could easily have drawn with a nervy finish. Degea with one fine save late on allowed United earn what was a fully deserved 3 points.

Decent game, Dalot seriously needs to sort out his passing though and I'm not convinced Shaw is the long term option.

Fair play to lampard, he's created a good side here. If DCL can stay fit and start scoring, they'll do well.

Thank God for those 3 points.
We need to finish off our moves and get those fecking goals. Hope Ten Hag has a stern stern word with the team!

Otherwise, Casemiro will get more solid. Not worried about him. Not bad performance but got to do better in front of goal. We also got sloppy in some parts in that 2nd half. just have to cut that out asap!

That ref can feck off as well!

Should've won by a more comfortable margin but did well to dig in at the end when the pressure was mounting.

Should have killed it stone dead a long time ago, and had to hold on like grim death. Disrespected possession far too much all game, we need to get much better.

That said, a very important away win. I thought Shaw was very good in the second half and, even though we were hanging on desperately by the end, we were good value for the victory. We're looking decent in the table again.

I honestly wonder if I watch a different game to everyone else.

Our passing and ball retention is genuinely woeful. So many Sunday league level errors.

Everton are really really bad and very negative. Reminded me of the Leicester game where they were dreadful and we were less dreadful.

We made it hard for ourselves but In the end we got the result.

Should have been much more comfortable. Rashford's goal shouldn't have been disallowed.

I don't understand how you don't give a handball against Scamacca and Gabriel in the games just earlier in the day, and then you give this one?

It is not the law or VAR that is the problem, it is the people applying it i.e. the PL refs who are the problem Absolute shite.

Great result tonight. Going away to Goodison is a hard game, it was looking bad when we went behind but we hit back with a very good performance to win the match and 2-1 really flatters Everton for the most part, I thought we dominated them for most of the game. Casemiro was excellent after his initial mistake, Shaw was great, as was Eriksen and Antony. The only thing that really let us down was a few too many passing errors which we got away with. Shame for Rashford at the end, that was a well taken goal and a bit unlucky for it to hit the hand.

Job done. Nice run of games coming up now in the league

Newcastle United (H)
Tottenham Hotspur (H)
Chelsea (A)
That's a depressing list. :(

Shaw got a kick up the backside, playing well again. He’s much stronger than Malacia, so maybe this gives Malacia time to adjust his game while being understudy.

Antony real quality.
Rashford’s disallowed goal was brilliant.
DeGea clutch yet again.
Beautiful finish for #700.
Lindelof & Martinez handled them pretty comfortably until that frantic 10 minutes.
Eriksen came off and we were like a headless chicken.
Dalot was awful, gave the ball away a dozen times.

Good to win again. Squad feels thin. Hopefully we are looking at strikers and right backs in January.

Scrappy win in an overall poor quality game. One of those fine margin games where we now celebrate but easily could have gone into a collective depression after the final whistle.

No stand out performers, except probably Eriksen who proves time and time again that a proper ball player is vital for any football team. The other guys were just scrappy from start to finish, some good moments, some bad moments.

Also a ridiculous disallowed goal btw

Played really well for 60 min, esp after the shock of conceding poor goal. The last 30 min we were poor, passing was horrible and no intensity. A terrible side like Everton will always resort to high balls and we got a bit lucky dealing with them. Still lots of work needed to get this team to play for full 90 min.

Before ETH that disallowed goal would have went against us full fold and we would have dropped points. So progress there

Overall, we played good in periods, but we are still really sloppy and we have go get much better at controlling possession.

Hated watching those last 5 minutes, thought DCL was going to score against us in stoppage time again like he did at Old Trafford couple of seasons ago. Luckily it didn't happen and we deservedly won really.

Should have been a comfortable 3-1 win. Ten Hag's first challenge was honestly getting us to look like a professional football team and he has done that.

The thing with the Rashford handball is that I don't think it would result in a penalty at the other end as his arm wasn't in an unnatural position. If that's the case, I think it should have stood.

Always good to beat the overrated Lampard.

I thought this was by far our best played game yet under EtH. We completely dominated Everton if you take away the last 10 minutes where we parked the bus. We still have problems with too many mistakes. Everton had one chance in the first 80 minutes and they scored after a mistake from us.

I thought Casemiro and Eriksen would struggle to control the midfield, but we were so dominant that they didn’t have to do much defensively.

It’s a positive that we created so many chances, but it’s worrying that our front four looks out of sync. We had so many opportunities this game and we constantly squandered them by either making bad decisions in the final third or making bad passes. It was honestly impressive how we constantly fecked up in the final third.

But i’m a lot more positive after this game.

First half was hugely encouraging. A couple of steps forward towards where we want this team to be. We swamped Everton and our shape was consistently very good. We could have scored 4 or 5 goals.

Second half was not so good, but we still looked dangerous throughout. I felt a late equaliser was coming but thankfully we held on for a fully deserved win.

Tough to pick a MOM but I'll go with Shaw

Actually thought from when they scored to the disallowed goal, it was the best we have played controling the ball. They came on at the end as they threw the sink at it. But we dominated it I thought.

I'd imagine ETH would have been pleased with it. Won ball back very quickly when attacks broke down.

Really should have scored 4 at least. Some wayward passing at times from players under pressure which is A big difference between us and the top teams. Stupid individual mistakes at key areas on the pitch hurts us a bit.

8 games in and already have City, Liverpool and Arsenal out of the way. We just need to keep grinding out the wins.

I agree with this. United goal rightfully ruled out for handball. The others were incorrectly ruled as no penalty. We can’t complain but the scousers can. This is a great weekend

Excluding that violation at Citeh last week, that's 7 wins out of 8 games after the Brentford debacle.

Like we're constantly getting better and better in possession. Still a lot of work to be done but it's already a massive difference compared to last few years.

Really good performance for me. There were parts of the game where we seemed to be dissecting them. I noticed a few things:

1. Rashford had a few dribbles where he was able to nagivate through tight spaces through dribbling. That's something I haven't seen from him before. It either tells us that as a team we are creating more spaces like this or Rashford is taking in new things.

2. Casemiro was fantastic. He was everywhere, winning everything. Yes he had a few sloppy moments, but for the most part he was just a force.

3. We need to find a solution to how we attack. We had a lot of the ball and we were creating so much space. Yet I feel we should have created a few more chances. The issue for me has to do with our striker position. We haven't had any stability in there and therefore I don't think we've been able to create a consistent attacking plan for our striker.

4. Mctominay. Some people will say Eriksen going off the pitch, led to us relinquishing control. I don't think that's the case. I think the lack of movement offered by Mctominay simply became more evident with him replacing Eriksen. His presence essentially closes up half of the pitch to the defence for our build up play. His off the ball movement is awful.

5. We need a striker. Whether this is competition for Martial or a permanent no.9. The lack of pressure offered by Ronaldo is quite evident and we need to have a striker that suits what we want to do. Martial has been injured all season and we don't have another player that can offer anything decent after him.

A good win, that. We played well for the most part.

Some of our passing and decision-making in the final third is appalling, mind.

The rules are like this - when the attacker touches the ball it will automatically be disallowed - when a defender touches it, refs are allowed to use common sense....if they have that.
