PL L FA Premier League

Everton 3:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 26 April 2015

Well, it's United, and we haven't secured a top four place yet to be honest, mathematically and you're playing for one of the best clubs the world ( to me the best but obviously that is arguable). There is absolutely no excuse for a lack of motivation when you put on that shirt. You are so dam privileged and there should be no need for anything but working your ass off. That is how scholes, played, giggs etc etc etc. LVG and his team noticed a off kilter attitude. I don't think we will see this again.
Certainly the players won't look forward to Van Gaal's evaluation of the match, and rightly so. But it's not that they didn't work for it or something, mentally they just weren't up to it. You can blame them for that, and should blame them for that, but you also have to look why, what caused this wrong mental state.

Probably a complacency, but that isn't an excuse. They all know the premier league and all of them would have known that Everton has been pretty much traditionally a bogey place for us. Perhaps with Liverpool drawing yesterday they thought they could go through the motions, but honestly, the premier league?..it's never like that.

Strange performance. After many weeks of great intensity and application, we seemed so flat today.

We controlled the game for the first half hour with a bad bit of defending costing us a silly goal, but after that we just seemed to lack the will and fight.

Our defence was terrible today, that was a major problem. We were countered to death, Valencia and Shaw caught high up or out of position on a few occasions.

All that possession and we never really got in behind evertons defence.

I think it was just one of those games where too any things were not right from the off, most players were below par.

I expect a United team trailing at half time to come out quick and fired up. 2-0 down even more so. Rooney had an opportunity from a corner which Howard was comfortable with. I am very disappointed that in the opening 15 minutes that was it from us. We had a lot of the ball. Everton were happy with that. But the second half seemed to be like a team dead and buried in terms of getting a result and just playing the game out. We could have turned it around at 2-0 but never looked like we wanted it.

Our inability to to do simple bits of defending led to us losing this game. Valencia involved in all three goals being scored was a showcase for this, his lack of intelligence in the first goal was poor couple with Blind and McNair's dodgy defending, the second goal he just let his marker go and the third goal all the defence went to sleep but as he was supposed to be looking after Mirallas, you have to play until the whistle is blown. Just puts the whole team on edge when there is a lack of confidence at the back.

Its just a freaking nightmare that we cannot keep 2 young center backs fit for a full season while Chelsea can trot out 34 year old Terry and 31 year old Ivanovic week in week out.

Bloody frustrating game. We were pants, the midfield and attack especially although I'm sure the defence will get most of the blame as usual.

The referee was obviously hugely frustrating and it's very difficult to play ball when the other side is getting frees for every little nudge and allowed to infringe at will. But teams have found us out, the same way we found out Arsenal years ago and beat them regularly with ease.

Sit back, defend well and wait for us to make a mistake. When we do, come at us fast and hard. We'll shit ourselves and you'll score.

As an aside, I feel like every time I watch us play in black shorts, we play like shite and/or lose. Am I imagining it?

Valencia as usual spent the whole afternoon playing in an identical game of football to the one taking place, but that kicked off about 10 seconds later.

McNair also played with the confidence of a man who'd move house if he found a spider in his bedroom.

I'm usually one to focus on the positives after a defeat, but they were few and far between.

We seemed out of balance early on. For some reason. Even our early spells of possession didn't seem very fluid or promising.

If they lacked motivation for this because they think the jobs done, I'm sure they won't next weekend.

It seems United are highly reliant on Carrick to provide his calmness and industry in midfield.

I'd be interested to find out win/loss/draw statistic when he's out of the team this season.

The biggest positive I take from that match is that I can't believe we'll be that bad next week.

Beyond that, just a horrible performance. Slow, uninspired and devoid of flair in attack. Lack of organisation and concentration in defence. Blind-Herrera is nothing like Carrick-Herrera and if Herrera doesn't play, Mata doesn't play.

Meanwhile Rooney had his usual day trip to Liverpool, it has to be a mental thing, it happens too often to be anything else. Fellaini is easy meat for homer refs and determined opponents.

Still, we live to fight another day, and as long as the maths is on your side the best thing about football is there's always next week.

Our away form has been abysmal all season.

At this moment I can't see us beating Hull and Palace and both feel like draws and that is my main concern. A point today would have been perfect and we really should have done a Chelsea...

Woke up on a left foot, had a lousy day until the game, had a bad feeling about it, couldnt watch it, checked the result and it had made my day even worse..
Hope they'll make me happy next week cause I usually have a shite week when we loose.

I thought we'd lose today, and said as much this morning in the matchday thread, but to lose like was a complete and utter embarrassment. Every single player (bar Shaw and at a stretch Mcnair) should be utterly utterly ashamed of themselves today. No heart, no desire, no commitment. They all played like a bunch of players that thought they only had to turn up in order to win.

I can take losing (last week for example I thought we were fantastic) but I cant accept what we saw today. I hope LVG rips them to shreds.

Just heard LVG Post match. Glad he gave Everton credit. Pretty obvious he was not happy with the teams attitude. Maybe Liverpool result went to the players heads and they thought it was going to be a formality. Very confident lesson has been learnt. Normal service for remaining 4 games, though out of our hands now.

That was certainly the impression I got.

I heard his interview after the game and nearly said that to you in the Herrera thread. LvG definitely was not happy with the intensity of the team. All they have had recently is praise and more praise, even after losing to Chelsea. This will have brought them all and their egos down to earth with a bump.

Lets hope so. Theres still a job to be done.

Bad day at the office. It happens. its happened before and it'll happen again. What's frustrating is that we caused this ourselves. The first goal was a tad unlucky but I think we could have tracked back better. The second was always gonna happen when you give 3 corners in a row, and the last didnt matter by then because it was just the icing on the cake, but play possibly could have stopped. All however were avoidable.

We couldn't get through their midfield, we look so vulnerable in the break - I'd prefer us to play counter attack rather than try to press all day and get nowhere - and the chances we had - good ones too, we finished poorly.

I'm sure LVG will deal with the complacency issue and I'm sure we'll bounce back soon. Today showed us how we lack a)Carrick, b)and proper RB, and c)and proper CB. Smalling and McNair did ok, but looked slow and lightweight.

We were at our worst all season but I do think the score line was very harsh. One lucky clearance from McNair and an onside goal that Lukaku who was offside clearly interfered with play since everyone stopped.

Didn't deserve to win either way though, mind.

I've just seen that LVG has admitted that himself, Giggs and Albert Stuivenberg all thought the players weren't right in the warm up...just adds to my anger tbh.

What did the players actually think?! That they're now so good they could just turn up and piss a win? Unbelievable really.

Only seen the highlights on MotD but it's the same thing against defensive teams. Blind just doesn't have the discipline of Carrick, nor the passing range. Didn't think we were too bad going forward, but our defending was crap.

We need to draw teams out and hit them with pace...which we don't have

We got hit by a train basically, someone should re-do the ManUtd-City train-bus-collision gif.

I'm going to the next week's WBA game, hope this defeat was a wake-up call and we smack Pulis' cap backwards.

Strange performance. After many weeks of great intensity and application, we seemed so flat today.

I think those 2 things are clearly linked - a few players are looking a bit tired, those big game performances seem to have taken alot out of them mentally and physically.

Might see a couple of changes against WBA to freshen things up.

That said, Valencia as usual spent the whole afternoon playing in an identical game of football to the one taking place, but that kicked off about 10 seconds later. Even when we've looked good Valencia has still managed to look absolutely horrendous, and I can't say that about any other player.
 that is brilliant even by your standards

Indeed. Hull and Palace are both brilliant teams. Impossible that we will win either of them, truly improbable. I think we'll lose 5-0 to both of them.

Oh come on, we are better than this. We beat Liverpool away from home and have had a few good performance on the road. It's not like we're this terrible.
