Chelsea 1:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 07 February 2016

Unforgivable Jackson playing Costa onside. One moment of mental weakness undid the entire result.

Oh well. I've been shipped out since December, it's all about waiting for next season really. LVG doesn't have it in him to make the top 4, yet alone challenge for the league.

Yes, unforgivable for a 20 year old to make a mistake.

Really disappointed not to win today but I would've definitely taken a draw before the match. We played so well for majority of the game, if we play like this in the coming weeks and hope those above us drop points then we have a great chance of making top four.

Shades of the infamous 5-3 performance against the Champions elect of this season. Thought we were delight till the last half hour or so, real shame. Football is a 90 minute game. You can't expect to win matches by turning up for two thirds of the game. Poor performance, overall.

But why is this happening? Is it fitness? Is it concentration? is it panic and fear setting in?

Hiddink was the manager who made the right subs and tactical changes; that was the difference in the match.

Who'd have thought we'd look worse after subbing Felli off?

Van Gaal's management and tactics were poor after we scored. We stopped using Martial who was terrorizing them. Memphis should done better with that ball. Showed Zero footballing IQ either go to the corner flag or use a high percentage pass to Morgan. He basically bailed the Renties out with the poorest pass possible.

:mad::mad::mad:

What drives me mad, isn't so much that we sit back after go ahead, it's that we do all the hard work in defending only to lump the ball up the pitch like a Sunday pub league side once we win it back.

We were defending like heroes in that second half but when there were opportunities and runners there to play the ball out of defence, we just leathered possession back to them.

We did it a hundred times and then one of those times, an unfortunate slip and a more unfortunate break from a tackle resulted in a jammy goal. By hoofing it away we invited Chelsea to build momentum and allowed them the chances for that little bit of luck.

In the end, we were lucky again to have De Gea save us a point. Shame, because there was some lovely stuff going forward. Rooney looked really sharp again and Mata did well too.

There were definitely a lot of plus points, however the manager messed up again. Putting Memphis on against a side who have you under the cosh, when he has had sod all football was utter madness. There is an U-21 game tomorrow, why isn't he getting some match fitness in those games, like Januzaj is having to. Is it below Memphis to do that?

You would happily take a draw against nr14

Dear god help us all...

I agree he cost us the three points today.

The performance was ok. De Gea was best player in a United shirt. Was pleased with CBJ's performance again but once again we couldn't see a game out. Well at least van Gaal can prepare to move on at the end of the season because he definitely won't be getting into the top 4 now, which is what saved him last season.

Depay is just bereft of any confidence...the van Gaal effect. Feel sorry for the guy really. Strange thing is he's exactly the type of player that would thrive under Mourinho.

Just can't wait for this season to end. I really hope the right moves are being made behind the scenes. The only consolation this weekend are the City and Liverpool results but in terms of top four or title aspirations...we're fecked!

..........oh yes, and Schneiderlin's still shite!! Just can't understand people's fascination with him??

Memphis feels like an absolute failure of a transfer. Makes me feel sick because I thought he would be a good player for us.

I'am not a WUM

It is how I honestly feel about United at this moment, I think we are one of the shittiest teams in the league since december and the results are a proof of that.

The thing about this whole situation bothering me the most is some fans being positive about this, calling today a good performance, are you having a laugh ? You'd be right about it if we were playing Chelsea from last season or anyother season but this year they are 14th in the league and just about anyother team has been taking away 3 points from but not us. In my opnion this was another boring game of shit football, lateral passing, no creativity, no quality but you are right if you'd say we were the better team on the pitch for first 70 minutes (because Chelsea were so poor) and getting the lead, then throwing it away because we can't handle any sort of pressure.

-We are boring as feck
-We can't handle pressure if teams start playing forward
-No creativity or quality in the team
-No desire/drive/energy in the team

-We have 14 on 36 since december (played 12, won 3, drawn 5 and lost 4)
-Out of the CL
-6 points away from 4th place and 12 points away from first place

How the feck do people still find a spin to say anything positive about this ? Honestly I hated watching this game, I didn't think we deserved to win, last 20 minutes were terrible, apart from goal Lingard and shot from Martial not seen any chances worth mentioning and all that against a team currently in 14th place. People talking about it like this is still the unbeatable Chelsea, it is not. This shit is worrying and massively disappointing. People still getting a positive spin on it, sorry but you are putting the standards for the club ridiculously low. I feel outraged watching this shower shite, but somehow there is always fans still applauding and saying it was a good performance, it is fecking not, simple as that !

This match was always going to be tight. United haven't won at the Bridge in years and always get fecked in the end. Form and table position go out the window against the likes of City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Livershite, etc. It's scrappy, it's always on edge.

You have poor perspective and selective memory when it comes to criticizing LVG and the current squad.

Outside of December, the play hasn't been that boring as you claim. But it was effective and United got results. United didn't handle the pressure well at the end, but Chelsea gave it to them, so fair play. United handled Chelsea's pressure before the goal and eventually Chelsea broke through, fine.

And to say the players or team have no creativity, quality or desire/drive is over the top. Take a nap, take a shit. You're over the top.

Of course, Chelsea are still a good team regardless of where they currently are in the league and lets face it our record at Stamford Bridge is not so good.

I can understand the Memphis change. Lindgard looked done and we needed someone capable of receiving and running with the ball. If Memphis hadn't messed up the simplest of passes we'd be praising the substitution.

Actually felt that was one of our better performances against Chelsea in a long time.

Thought we played some good stuff, were never going to create loads of chances in this game but our goal was a brilliant move and excellently finished.

Large chunks of the game we just cancelled each other out, but they are still a decent side and would always raise their game against us.

We dropped off and were far too nervous/defensive after the goal. With over 30 minutes to go it was always going to be a hard ask to sit off and stop playing.

On any other occasion that's not a bad point, but at this stage of the season and with all the teams above us barring City winning we really needed to not let the gap increase anymore.

I don't think we can pin this one on LVG though and I've been very critical of him recently.

This is how I felt in the southamption game. Felli has been through a very poor run of form but as soon as he came off vs sotn I said we would lose to a set piece. He's so important in the box vs a side like chelsea. We are so weak in the air it is crazy. Guess LVG has never had to play in a league where teams do often sit in their box and try nick a header. Hard to manage that with our squad without felli on the pitch

Indeed. I didn't see the point of subbing on Schneiderlin for Fellaini who was causing them problems. It's no coincidence that Fabregas imposed himself more once Fellaini went. If we're going to sit back and allow teams to attack, then we need height in the box to defend against the inevitable corners and free kicks that will come. I didn't get the point of the Memphis sub either. Lingard was on a yellow but he was playing well.

The Memphis thing reminds me of Nani losing the ball in the same corner instead of just holding it a few years back.

We are playing like an average team. Apart from Martial there is none in the team showing any sort of attacking quality at all. Our only ture quality player is DDG. Pretty poor for a team that should be competiting for the title and has one of the most expensive squad in the league.

If I'am talking shite, then you are lowering the standards so low it is a fecking joke.

Damn, I came on here feeling kind of positive. No it was a late goal, sickening time etc but was impressed by how we played most of the game and CBJ good despite positional error for last goal. He's young, I'll forgive him. Guess that's how much my expectations have been lowered

The two subs with fresh legs got into position to kill the game or at least threaten Chelsea's goal, but obviously the execution was complete shit.

The team does need more quality overall, there's no denying that. But it's not as dire as many people think.

United has an expensive squad, so what. You have to pay to replace the immense talent United have lost the past 3 or 4 years. They didn't do it gradually and that's their fault.

United's standards are always to win the league and try to give themselves a chance in any other competition. The quality on the pitch is currently not good enough, but it's improved from Year Moyes.

Fellani gets a lot of shit here but he has been very good for us.

its van Gaal that needs to be subbed.

He'll go in the summer. No point getting rid before then. That said, top four looks ropey...but I doubt an interim manager will do much better.

I've been seeing alot of people on here being fairly positive about todays result.

Personally I don't understand it at all. I was bored most of the game, didn't think we played well, not many chances created and at the end of the game we gave the points away after some terrible defending.

I was expecting/hoping us to run over Chelsea and take them by the throat for 90 minutes. Scoring a couple of goals and taking the much needed 3 points.

Not saying we were bad for the entire game, we started well and also had a good period in the start of the second half, goal from Lingard was class and all that but the rest of the game was not up to the standard I want to see United play. We were to scarred of Chelsea, showing them too much respect, win was up for the grabs and we lacked the quality once again to do it.

The games are better than in december, lets say instead of relegation fodder we are playing midtable form right now. Still not good enough in my opnion. Take a look at the table and see how Leicester, Spurs etc play and then you realize how fecking poor we are and that top 4 is out of reach.

De Gea by far the best player in the pitch. Martial is going to be a star, Darmian's best performance for us, Carrick and Rooney continued playing well, while Lingard scored a great goal.

I think that CBJ was alright bar a time or two he got skinned from Will.I.Am, but his experience showed by gifting two points to Chelsea.

Depay is easily one of the worst players I have seen in a United shirt. He is Djemba-Djemba, Obertan, Bebe, Miller, Falcao bad. And from what he has shown for us, haven't seen any talent there. Which I find extremely surprising considering that I was impressed with his performances for PSV and Holland.

Not bothering much that we aren't going to finish in top 4. That was clear that it was going to happen since December, when we continued with Van Gaal.

All things considered the draw is a fair result even if it feels incredibly frustrating to concede so late after such a stupid attacking play. Either take the ball towards the corner or don't mess up an easy pass like that.

fair enough. The problem is we are 6 points off the team above us and none of them look like they will be collapsing.

What are we...12 behind Lecister? painful. van Gaal will never be forgotten...for the wrong reasons.

To four are playing each other next week. We've got Arsenal after the Sunderland game. If we've truly improved we've got a chance to get in the top four. City, WHU and Spurs away won't be easy mind but who knows eh. I think a top four will give us a decent platform for Mourinho.

Under Moyes we had also 41 points at this stage (9 feb 2014)

I don't see any differences between the two sides. Under Moyes we looked clueless, under LVG we look teethless. Only signficant difference is LVG has had more time with the team and he has spend alot more money. Feels like it has all been a waste because seeing no improvement at all, none whatsoever. We were midtable under Moyes, we are midtable under LVG (even last season we were midtable performance).

Losing was somehow a different kind of disappointment to other games where we've dropped points this season. Frustrating disappointment as opposed to depressing disappointment.

I feel shit about the result but what a goal that was by Lingard. Superb stuff. Real shame about the end but we best move on. Can't change anything now.

We played well, as we did Stoke, and Derby, but if I was a journalist would I not be justified in ask LvG why the heck it has taken him so long to get their arses into gear?

If it was LvG's first season I'd be swooning over what was to come next season, but we've had all that, and here we are sitting 5th with a very limited chance of getting top 4, it is abject failure which ever way I look at it.

So what I'm gathering is that you believe United should have just stuck with Moyes? United could have had Baines instead of Shaw and Steven Naismith instead of Martial? The league this year is more competitive and United don't have enough quality. If Moyes was current manager from November through today, United would really be midtable, like 9th and instead of a shout of CL, United might well be struggling for top-half of the table.

LVG and staff have righted the ship since the New Year and the players are fighting and have a belief of winning, this was not the case with Moyes. December 2015 was so diabolical, just too much went against United. As we've always believed, you can't win the league before December, but you sure as hell can lose it or give yourself a bitch of a time.
