Bailly looked liked an unmovable object the world revolves around. Good all round performance from the team.

We're far more nervous at home it seems, it changes your composure and everything.
Exactly. What is it about OT that makes even super confident (seemingly) players like Zlatan nervous though? Not enough support from a crowd that was used to SAF and Fortress Old Trafford?

This is no time to give any kid any run in. It's serious crunch time right now. Regardless of age - whether 35 or 18 - Jose has to play those who are in form, who are most fit, who he trusts and who can deliver the goods.
Except we've got so many injuries that the kids are now next in line. At least one of Fosu-Mensah or Tuenzebe should get minutes in situations like tonight to help them be ready. If we get any more injuries we may suddenly be relying on them in the starting line-up. Even if it's just a couple of minutes at the end of the match (like what Carrick got), that can help them be mentally ready if the situation arises where we do need them later on.

Very happy with the 3 points and the performance. Bailly was a rock at the back and kept things shut.

I think it suits mou's tactics best. He is a counter attacking coach. When he has to play at home he has to come out and play.

I disagree.

We have simply missed too many scoring chances at home. We have played most of our opponents off the park at Old Trafford and created loads of chances. It's just the finishing that let us down.

Strikers have less space to work in when opposing teams park the bus at Old Trafford. They generally have more space to work in when playing away, as the home team plays a more open game. Nothing to do with the Old Trafford crowd making players nervous.

I don't disagree that we have been poor at finishing but that works both home and away so that isn't the difference between the difference between our home and away form.

Don't think we would have scored the first goal at home simply because teams won't come out their own half.

You're right in that it generally adds to the anxiety of the players when they have no space to run into.

I think it's both. It's the way opposing teams play and us being nervous if we don't score early or in the 1st half. Then in the 2nd we rush things and become more and more nervous.

It's a vicious circle. :)

Very professional performance.

What I like most is how the goals are now spreading round. 3 in 4 games for Miki. 3 in five for Rashford while Lingard, Herrera, Rooney, Martial are pitching in. Good signs.

Now to enjoy City run themselves ragged. Extra time at Wembley now. Meanwhile, Celta Vigo is being beaten 1-0 at home by Real Betis and hopefully Crystal Palace can surprise Liverpool in the ongoing match. All good. :)

I get your point and it makes a lot of sense.

3 games in a row we've scored fairly early in the first half - that really helps. Just wish we'd have looked to sub Pogba earlier as well as Baily. Both are looking very tired and showed that they are critical players.

Martial - he ran his socks off, chasing from the front, making runs and generally looking hungry. Hopefully it's clicked that he has the talent as long as he works, then an odd off game here and there won't see him lose his spot as much.

Rooney - good performance, especially considering his layoff and an important goal. Needs to stop getting yellows for dissent though.

Blind - solid performance and will need to build on it. A few times he should have cleared instead got caught.

Anthony Taylor - what a pathetic performance. Thankfully didn't cost us.

Very solid all round. No one with a wow performance...just everyone on the right page, nice and comfortable performance through. Exactly what was needed.

Decent performances from Martial and Fellaini and organised at the back.

Nice to play in the sun too!

We're on track to break the 70-point mark for the first time since SAF left. Here is what we had since:
2013-14: 64
2014-15: 70
2015-16: 66
2016-17: 63 points with 18 points up for grabs

In 2014, 70 points were enough for a top 4 position. We probably need more this season.

You've already broken it since Sir Alex left.

It was a mentally strong away performance, we were stout defensively and Martial was causing them plenty of problems up top, it was a very good result given the changes we had to make and how many games we are playing.

  • Three central defenders out
  • Our top goalscorer out
  • Our second top goalscorer (and one of our more creative midfielders) out
  • Played more games than any other team this season
  • 120 minutes on Thursday night
  • Rooney not played in a while
  • Blind not played central defence in a while
  • Martial not played centre forward all season
  • Burnley one of the best home records in the league
  • 2-0 up at half time
Graeme Souness: "Not been great" :wenger:

The very first thing he said. Hes's a miserable sod.

A welcome return recently to professional away performances: wining without being overly exciting or dashing but playing some good football with good (and useful) possession and pretty good passing with the occasional brilliant move. Today special praise for Blind, Fellaini, Rooney and Herrera as well as obviously Martial. Bit, for me, MoM was Bailly. He has been brilliant recently and I think he and Rojo were turning into our new Bruce/Pally/Rio/Staam. ALso Jose got his tactics spot on again - let's hope he has something very specil planned for Thursday (we will need it)

It's weird sometimes he seems to love us but as soon as he starts calling us Man You, you know he's going to bitch about something and usually on days when we actual deserve some praise. But i guess, once a Scouse tosser, always a Scouse tosser

My only criticism is why he didnt give the kids a run at the end. Solid performance otherwise.
Yeah, lets put the result at risk for giving some minutes to the kids.

Our defence is shaping up to be similar to the title winning backlines of the chelski/Manchester United dominance era.

Not saying we are there yet, but we have been getting there with each passing match. Even with a back four that gets chopped and changed so much. It really bodes well for the future.

The goals will come once the players mature/gel and we bring in some new blood.

If Mourinho could design his ideal away day Premier League performance, I imagine it would look like this. Scored early on, got the second before they had a chance to build any pressure, then kept them completely at arms length til the final whistle.

While I still think Zlatan is a major loss, it did also remind us that Martial and Rashford are a pretty decent pair of strikers to be able to call upon. If Rooney also finds a bit of form between now & the end of the season (and he was okay today) 4th place may not be impossible to reach after all.
