Okay... thoughts :).

Schweinie and Herrera look great in our engine room. Loved how they bossed the game when they came on.

3 of our 4 defenders are class. Can you guess the love child I would like to see replaced by a transfer?

Anyone care to tell me Pedro would not improve us? Memphis may have bags of potential but he was way too invisible.

Rooney was off. Do you ever think we will see the day LvG makes the call to bench our captain?

Hope DDG situation gets sorted.

Right here we go...

The result was great. The performance was efficient. Anybody that says we were poor is talking nonsense if we look at it sensibly. Was it pretty? No! Was it fluent? No! But that actually doesn't mean it was poor!

Of course we would like better. We want goals but that's where there is room for improvement.

I was critical of us after the Spurs game. But I didn't actually watch it, I based it on what I read and small bits of the game I managed to see. But after watching it tonight I have a bit more of an appreciation of what LVG is trying to do.

The defense was on top all game. I thought Blind was superb as was Smalling. Darmian is a really good old fashioned defender and it's great to see.

Midfield controlled the game and really did not give Villa a sniff. Schneiderlin buzzed around, Schweinsteiger came on and really took the leadership role and played with class.

Januzaj was good in small patches as was Memphis. They showed flashes without being outstanding. Mata was creative and I'm not actually sure why he's getting a bit of a hard time in the match day thread! If we can get him centrally more we have a hell of a player there. And I thought Herrera looked lively and controlled.

It was a 7/10 performance from most of the players. Smalling and Blind maybe an 8 but Rooney a 4! And that's the negative for me. Rooney was abysmal and I don't use that word lightly!

Having watched that I'm not sure Pedro is needed as much as a striker!

He is an even shitter version than a shit version on Andy Carroll.

I was counting and got up to 6 headers challenged against Smalling, zero headers won. One challenge against Blind, zero headers won. Lost interest after realising he was nothing but a myth.

The theatre of dreams will be an apt name. There'll be 70,000 snoring every home game if we keep this up.

I'm pleased with the win, but it's painful to watch. Villa looked dead just after we scored, then we proceeded to pass the ball around in front of them. Not good enough!

That was not really a good game but I hope LVG sees more and more (again) what's working and what's not. That was not really a good game and we're still below par but at least we're winning games. Creating chances is still our big weakness though

Decent performance. Defenders were really good, Schneiderlin played well in midfield and when Herrera and Schweinsteiger came on it looked better. Memphis tried hard and looked dangerous most of the match. Mata did a reasonable job. Rooney was a total let down. He did not get the service to score a goal, but his movement and overall performance was terrible.

Another win and another clean sheet so result wise it's going good so far.

I'll start on the positives first which is our defense on the whole. We look very solid and even with players in front of them intent on giving the ball away so stupidly at times or losing it so cheaply, they held firm. Darmian was magnificent and shares Shaw's trait of not letting crosses in at all. He's already looking like an amazing signing and such a major boost to first team. Smalling too was once again completely dominant, holding off Abongalor at times like he was nothing and calmy mashalling the back line.

As for the negatives, it's once again persisting with playing so slowly, not having deep runners, constantly playing to feet and being so negative. Their was a moment where Villa were pressing us quite high up and we passed it around one touch to get out of trouble, great so far. The ball comes straight to Schneiderlin and with his first touch plays the ball to his left so he's forced to face the back line. I screamed out because there was space to his right. He could take the touch and have time to look up and see if there was anything on. It sums up our bigest problem at the minute because so often during periods of that game and against Tottenham(and even going back to parts of last season) we don't take risks. The personel or formation isn't going to matter much if we continue to play so conservatively. And what's so frustrating is that there is such a great team lying just below the surface that peaks it's head every now and again, when the players remember that they are good enough to take the ball under pressure, they can run at people and it's not that bad to risk possession if it means you could put a player through.

Type of results you can build off, solid and in control but not inspiring. Wait for the attackers to kick in and we'll be awesome!

Defensively we look very solid, the fullbacks are our best players right now for me. Schneiderlin is a bit too casual on the ball but provides good protection and Smalling is fantastic at defending, he just needs to sort his passing out.

Up top it was poor again for the most part, a couple of decent runs from Memphis, couple of good through balls from Mata and some solid moments form Adnan as well as the goal, but the amount of times we stall on the break is frustrating and Rooney as a focal point kills more attacks than the Death Star killed Alderanians.

We certainly looked crisper offensively once Schweini and Herrera came on.

Souness and redknapp are laughable, when united scrape a 1-0 its lacking flair and boring but when Liverpool do it against Stoke then they have showed great spirit, feck off.

Well ...
to be fair we should aspire to more than fecking liverpool. But its been two solid performances so im happy

Ill take a 1-0 away from home anywhere. 36 more of those please.

Anywhere but Villa park I should have said. If we can't win there where will we win?

I seriously couldn't give a damn that some people think it was a bit boring. It was wet against a stubborn, physical side at the start of a new season when we're still gelling. We should have scored more, but a win is a win is a win as they say.

Thank heavens for sensible match day posters.

:lol:That was pretty torpid. Hell at least the defence looked solid, albeit against limited opponents. Ages since we've looked strong in defence.
As for Rooney...good god.

Januzaj scored but i still cant stand this 4-2-3-1 bullshit, after subs, we looked more like a team with 3 CMs

Thank heavens for sensible match day posters.

Thank you! Thing is it wasn't pretty, I wasn't happy with the attacking performance but it needs to be put in perspective. We won, it was solid and we move on. Next up?! Let's just get another 3 points and another slight improvement in the attacking performance.

We looked much better in the 2nd half when Herrera came on. For me, he has to be in the starting 11. We looked very good at the back and for much of the 2nd we owned the midfield.

Attacking wise we still look rusty as feck. There were some flashes from Memphis in the middle of a so-so performance, the same from Mata. Januzaj took his chance well and scored but, I feel as though it's a tough ask trying to play him in the 10 spot. He was bossed off the ball several times and the difference in our buildup after Herrera came on for him was like night and day.

Rooney...where to begin. He always looks a bit off the pace at the beginning of the season but, after tonight and last weekends efforts, he really looks out of sorts. I'm not worried about the poor touches, which really weren't an issue tonight, or the errant passes, which were a bigger problem tonight. I am worried about his overall lethargy and what appears like a lack of energy and drive. There were at least a couple of times where he looked to have given up on situations where in the past he would have fought for possession or to have put himself in a better position. He honestly looks like he's carrying an injury.

That said, he's more than likely just laboring to get up to 100% match fitness, as are other players on the squad, and I think in a few weeks that he'll look the business.

Overall I'm pleased with the results and am super excited to see us back in the CL on Tuesday. Hoping we can come out looking a little sharper at the front and put in a good performance at home.

A a neutral, the match just went by.
Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing.

Restricted their chances, Darmian is looking like a fantastic buy. We have some good moments going forward, and a number of attempts at threading the needle that were only just averted by Villa. Unlucky that Memphis didn't bag that goal.

We just need to stop giving away easy possession at the back, and keep growing into our attacking play.

not to mention 2 solid defensive displays,, perhaps gave 1 decent chances away over the 2 games.

6 points from 2 games this season, versus 13points from 10 games last year?!
And all this with a new goalkeeper and Jesus sitting in the stands.

There are many negatives.
The fact that we can't create chances is a huge problem, because I (like many MUFC fans), like to see attacking football.
The fact that Rooney can't get a shot on goal.

But the biggest positive is...

Six out of Six points.

Performance aside our defensive game is looking very solid, I can't recall Villa having many chances at all. Smalling and Blind were both very good and Darmian and Shaw weren't far behind, as a unit they were superb tonight.

As for the midfield well since we're effectively playing 2 holding midfielders I guess they deserve credit for the clean sheet as well. Schneiderlin looks settled as if he's been here ages and Schweinsteiger coming off the bench was a huge bonus. He'll have a great impact this season in terms of solidifying results. Herrera was pretty poor but I guess he's not had much match practice.

The attack was a massive let down again, Mata's assist was a great ball and he should have had another with the one through to Memphis but apart from that I think he ordinary. Memphis has to score those chances and I'm sure in time he will. Rooney was atrocious tonight, happy for Adnan.

Romero looked as composed as he did vs Spurs.

Overall 3 points, another clean sheet, top of the league, happy days!

I think it will all click into place. The defence, god forbid any injuries, will build a great understanding. Something they couldn't do last season. Our midfield option are fantastic. The forwards can then start to click.

Delighted with the win, but the manner in which we did it not so much. Defensively we looked really solid, but there needs to be a lot more urgency in our play when going forward, everyone just seems to play the safe ball all the time. Lack of movement up front is not helping matters, only Memphis was making runs all game really and I think we look a lot less dangerous without Ashley Young on the pitch. I don't see our game plan changing any time soon though with 6 points from 6. Dire to watch or not, if we keep winning I don't give a shit how bad we are to watch.

Hopefully Hernandez starts the next game and does well, I don't think I can stomach another Rooney performance like that. And hopefully Schweinsteiger can start soon, he made a massive difference when he came on.

Anyway, top of the league. Couldn't ask for a better start!

Young being dropped is good news in terms of the chances of Mata being moved inside to play no10 if Pedro arrives. I thought Young was unstoppable making the Pedro - Mata - Depay combo look unlikely but tonight I have hope.

@Pogue Mahone's still asleep.

Pleasant dreams.

Fair play to Tim Sherwood, magnanimous in defeat.

I didn't realize, but last season we apparently didnt win an away game till the end of November! Glad we got it done a lot earlier this season!

Good result. We are getting there slowly but surely. Defense looks good. Mike, blind and the full backs did well. Just the attack needs to get in sync a bit more.
6 points , 2 clean sheets. Good start so far. On to the CL
