Manchester United 1:1 Arsenal

Post-match discussion

Sun, 09 March 2025

A huge amount riding on Thursday. A victory there and this last couple of weeks may start to look like the moment that things started to come together. Enjoyed that second half and really hope it gives the team confidence for Thursday's game.

While I'm here I'd like to ask the mods why you can repeatedly call the United manager a fraud or a clown, call for him to be sacked after 3 months in the job, and generally whine like overentitled children without so much as a warning, but get a permanent thread ban for describing posts like that as 'shitty'? Am I really still not going to be able to contribute to the Amorim thread if he's still here in 10 years time, just for calling someone's posts 'shitty' during the first 3 weeks of his tenure?? Apologies for asking that question in this thread but couldn't see where I should direct it to.
I got a 5 day ban for posting like an over entitled child, so you’re incorrect.

Should’ve won that comfortably
I think we would have if Amorim didn't bring Hojlund on and gave chance to Chido, instead.

Having not started Hojlund, it feels like Amorim
1. Avoided completely demorilizing Hojlund by preferring a youth player over him even as a sub
2. Avoided putting pressure on young Chido

We will never know if his decisions were the right ones, but I personally feel like it was cowardly. Based on few cameos we have seen, Chido could have scored where Hojlund failed. Maybe he would have, maybe he wouldn't have but there's a chance he would have. As for the pressure - Heaven was fantastic playing against his former team and there's no reason why Chido wouldn't have been, either.

Some coaches have that extra bit of courage and "feck it, let's go for it" mentality, Amorim clearly does not. Too bad. You need x-factor to achieve big things, especially when you are not supported by insane amount of money and need miracles

P.S. Toby Collyer was great. So nice to see him back. We visibly improved once he came on instead of Eriksen.

Pleasantly surprised by that performance given the injuries we have.

It does make you think, Arsenal are better than any side left in the Europa and we probably should have won today, that gives you slight hope for our European chances.
- Given our injuries? Does that mean we don’t need to sign anyone because our injured players will return?

- Playing a bunker defense will help achieve 10th place in the PL and no where in Europe.

Can anyone fill in the rice celebration? Why was he shushing our fans? Were they singing about him or something?

He’s one of those players who I just can’t get on board with, as he isn’t particularly exciting to watch, but he is effective and his stats do stack up. Find him annoying as hell though

No it was properly cringe. Ran straight Infront of my section above the tunnel proper giving it. 1-1 you silly bastard.

Also then walked off after Ft with his arms up shaking his head as we all gave it 'you're gonna win feck all'.

Haha well done. He’s the epitomy of their club, giving it large before they’ve actually achieved anything.

Im confident that the whole “how many yards for that free kick” sh*te would not be discussed if any other team scored that goal. Also , it will be quoted for the next 12 months anytime United get mugged by officials
We had a game, either last year or the year before, where the ref put our wall back about 15yds, and we conceeded.
Can't remember who it was against?

Aston Villa away. If I remember correctly, Anthony Taylor was the referee that day as well. The media glossed over that incident, as you would expect.

A very entertaining second half. We played quite well, and it confirms once again that this squad is more suited to defending in a low block and counter-attacking with quick transitions. This style of football suited Bruno, Casemiro, and Garnacho very well today. However, this is not the kind of football that wins you leagues.

Onana and our defense had a good game. All of them played quite well, with a special mention to Heaven, who was immense during the last 30 minutes.

Our midfield didn’t control the ball at all and released it too early on most occasions. Casemiro did well defensively, and Bruno launched multiple counter-attacks. My unpopular opinion is that we need a midfielder who can dictate the game more than a striker.

Our attack was better today. We created the best chances, and it's incredible that we only scored once. This kind of football suits Garnacho very well, and it showed. Mazz had one of his best offensive performances for us. Dalot needs to be more aggressive, or he won’t feature as much next year. ZZ is improving game after game, and Højlund had two great chances—it's a pity he didn’t convert either of them.

Overall, I enjoyed the game. We are quite good at playing like this, but of course, this is not how we want to play. It’s clear that the players and the system don’t match, and we will need to back Ruben in the summer—otherwise, next year won’t be pretty.
100% agree, we are suited to conceding and soaking up possession and then hitting on the counter. It'll be a completely different game on Thursday where we are expected to control and take the game to sociedad. We need to adapt more for the opposition we face. A lot of positives to take into Thursday that being said.

All sky sports, match of the day and the media in general have spoken about since the game is the wall being 1 yard further back than it need to be, not once have I seen them talking about Merino’s stamp on Garnacho.

Even with us in 13th/14th in the league the anti United bias is unrelenting.

When you’re massive, you’re massive.

If Bruno scored in 93rd minute it would surely be best moment at Old Trafford since cup game vs Liverpool last season, especially given the expectations before the game. Credit to Raya he made 2-3 great saves and kept Arsenal in the game.

First half was snooze fest until the goal, from both sides.

I love watching odegaard, but he really isn’t that effective in the grand scheme of things. Just an elegant dribbler and an insanely good first touch, but you can see why Arsenal fans are a bit fed up with him.

Man of the match for me was probably De Ligt, it was actually him smashing into someone that got the crowd into it second half

same story going back a long time - we are able to win when teams let us counter them. if they dont allow us to counter we have nothing. we were the best counter attack team in the world under ole. we haven't yet found a manager that can take control of the match and give us results. hopefully amorim can be that given more time to coach his ideas.

This is the first time in a long time that I've felt inclined to rate the players.
I'm not sure which I enjoy most - taking points off Arsenal or taking points off Arteta!
I know it's fashionable here to have hates for Lindelof, Dalot, Garnacho and many others on the team but it's a team game and the team, including those players, did well today and deserve credit.
The impact of our young players was encouraging and bodes well for the future.
Now - on to Thursday!

i know it’s frustrating that Hojlund couldn’t take either chance but I don’t think he particularly did anything wrong. It was a superb tackle from Rice and a brilliant block from whichever Arsenal defender blocked the shot from 6 yards or so.

This was a better outing for Hojlund than recent weeks and perhaps suggests he could be a little more effective off the bench than he has been starting. Certainly if we are able to get a lead in games then his pace on the counter when another team commits bodies forward is a better option than Zirkzee in that regard.

I’d like see us go with Zirkzee from the start and Hojlund coming on for a few weeks to see if we can get that working.

Yep, why it's going to be so fun and we finally get good again.

Yeah surely the favorites if Spurs manage to get knocked out against AZ. That would be such a huge deal, I'd say feck the league and go all in on this. If it takes 120 mins and Bruno is exhausted at the end of it, so be it.

I'm not sure what on earth you thought I said but you might want to re-read my post.

I never said we don't need signings. We're shit, I'd sign a new squad if I could.

I said we have a lot of injuries and still bested the 2nd best team in the league in terms of chances. That gives us some hope that we could best some teams in the Europa who are worse than Arsenal.

Liverpool game, and City game too.
We relied more on luck on both those games. In this game we actually created decent chances and we were actually defending well overall. Their goal came due to everyone rushed to the same zone leaving Declan alone, not much a tactical issue. If players were more focused, that goal could had been avoided.

Come on.. How can you not get a shot away there? It's a good tackle from Rice but it's only possible for him to make that tackle if Hojlund takes too long and fails to put his body between Rice and the ball.

Hojlund can either get a shot away quickly, or win a penalty by protecting the ball. He did neither.

You can't blame him for the other one that was blocked though, that was just good defending.

We had as many clear chances as City and Liverpool in both those games, and possession stats were competitive too.

From a quick glance, it looks like the thread ban was for insulting other posters and aggressive and argumentative posting.

You can always raise it in the admin forum if you feel aggrieved. https://www.redcafe.net/forums/admin-mod-help-forum.14/

It was a very solid performance from us tbh. Probably the first time against a top team where we were on the same level as our opponents for a long time.
We've played well in some of our bigger games this season. It's where our best performances have been. To the extent it looks like we have a motivation issue against smaller teams.

Yeah both teams were shit. I thought the games at City and Pool were better.

He's obviously got longer legs than your average referee

Did ok against an arsenal side clearly missing there best attacking players.

Did nothing first half in all honesty and but for a very dodgy wall position and questionable goal keeping, we probably loose the game. But great strike from Bruno and than we had something to hold onto and could sit in a soak and try to catch arsenal on the break, Arsenal left us gaps and we exploited it well, perhaps should of won the game.

The big games where we get pushed back seem to suit Amorins system, or do they suit the players? Maybe a bit of both.
This is some hard cope just to discredit Amorim. Using that rubbish wall positioning non-story peddled by Sky tells me all I need to know. Arsenal offered close to no attacking threat besides when our midfielders had a brain fart leaving Rice unmarked at the edge of the box and when Onana committed his customary 'parry ball back to opponent' blunder. If Arsenal missing their attacking players is any context to judge this result, then you're also indirectly saying Amorim coached a masterclass considering we have half our first team injured and our attacking players besides Bruno are also practically non-existent.

Btw, did anyone notice a few studds into the heel and foot of our players with no foul being called?

So, any chance they'll gloss over this one as well?

Onana - Tried his best to gift them a goal, but luckily Martinelli was offside. Made some good saves but there are always these mistakes.

Defence - Pretty solid all game. Lindelof winning all his aerial duels, crazy. De Ligt looking better each game and both Yoro/Heaven putting in a really assured performance.

WB's - Best attacking game from Maz so far. Never seen him in the opposition box so much. Dalot had a brilliant cross from which Maz should've scored but he had his brainfart moments as usual.

CM's - For two games now, Case has looked pretty decent. The press to disposses Merino was brilliant, not afraid to step up. Bruno, well, words aren't enough to describe how important he is to this team.

AM's - Garna again looking much better on the right. Eriksen did okay.

ST - We FINALLY drop Hojlund and the team looks so much better, actually playing football. Zirkzee struggled for most of the first half but was better in the second. That 1v1 from Hojlund though, so bloody poor. Just sums him up really, keep him out of the starting 11 for now.

Agree with most of this, Onana very consistently making basic errors. Dalot often cancelling out good bits of play with his own mistakes. However second half was encouraging as:
- Maz one of the best players on the pitch; Couldn't tell if he played well because he was aided by the system, or if it was all down to him venturing out and deciding to attack more (probably both)
- We actually had a midfield at one point in second half, and created a chance from that midfield
- ZZ offering incrementally more each match; he created a good chance for Garnacho last week with a decent chipped pass, just a better footballer than Rasmus (not damning with faint praise)
- Intensity was what we needed - please god/King Eric that becomes more consistent

I'm not discrediting Amorin, he did what he could with the tools at his disposal. It's a positive result from a well organised and solid performance.

But it's no more than that. Even Amorin himself says it's not a sustainable way to play. He made sensible decisions today with the set up, but we got a little bit of luck along the way.

Oh and the midfielders having a Brainfart and leaving someone unmarked on the edge of the box happens about 5 times a game if not more. It's not a Brainfart it some sort of coaching/system issues.

Arsenal were defintely the luckier team this time around. The Maz chance, Bruno chance and Hojlund non attempt.

For the goal the midfielders were too deep in the box, almost in line with our CBs, that's not a coaching issue.

This more than anything. Having a team like Arsenal pinned in their half in moments was really impressive. The press to create the Hojlund chance was brilliant too. That's how the team should be positioned, everyone jumping on opportunities.

Anyone else weirdly think that McT is on hand to stab the rebound from the Bruno shot/Raya save home if he's on the pitch?

We need that kind of player who sniffs out rebounds.

Clutching at straws with Hojlund there! Not quick enough to finish and allowed time for the defender to get back. He needs selling ASAP, allowing funds for another striker.
