What is Havertz meant to do/be good at? Is he another "does his best work off the ball" player?

Came for a draw and almost snuck the win. An absurd offside call first, then brainless positioning by our keeper on the second Arsenal goal. Then the topper when we sent everyone forward.

We made a good match of it, which is the best you'd hope for really. Didn't love how deep we played, how little of the ball we had but we had enough chances to win and played well within that set up. We'll do fine this season.

Really really unlucky. Was never offside, what’s the point inVAR if it can’t get that right? For Arses second goal, who was on the post that left his position? Stay there till the ball is clear. Schoolboy stuff. Yeah the keeper should have saved it and I think he would’ve but for the deflection. Third goal matters not. Had a potential win taken off us and then the ridiculous amount of stoppage time robbed us of even a point. Overall, with the injuries and side we had out, I thought we didn’t play too bad.

I don’t buy the “we should be satisfied we gave it a go and we were just unlucky”. You can’t say we would’ve surely won if Garnacho goal stood considering we conceded a goal right after scoring in the same game. First Arsenal goal shouldn’t have happened, it’s our fault to lack focus after scoring and we took an equalizer like amateurs. I agree we didn’t play that bad, but still it was a sub par performance considering the opposition and it’s only the scoreline that matters - we had a terrible away record under ETH and we continue to do so. Quite shocking how weak and physically inferior we are especially in defense, you can’t say it’s bad luck that we finished with Evans if we contracted him in the first place (never quality enough to play even 5 minutes against top opposition) and if we get the idiotic yellow cards every game for tactical fouls that occur due to quality gap between likes of Lindelof and Saka.
They had more shots, more shots on target, more possession, higher xG, more key passes and beat us in any other statistic. You can try to convince yourself this 3-1 is a freak result and “we should’ve won”, but truth be told we were inferior and end up on 0 points. Sometimes you luck out and get this marginally offside goal, sometimes you don’t. We can’t really rely on getting lucky in every away game.

alarming, and the time for ETH to improve our away form is shortly running out. Gutting defeat.

Edit: ffs, how many are just satisfied that “we gave fecking Arsenal a game”. Arsenal that just dropped points to Fulham and that’s nowhere near the best team in the country. And we celebrate that we gave them a go. Depressing

Amrabat, Mount, Shaw, Højland (for 70 minutes), Varane are apparently not part of this team, according to many, because “we are shit / worse than last season / Ten Hag is clueless.” It’s almost like we didn’t have a lot of first choice players available, yet people are shitting themselves over this match that was pretty even. Have a word!

Small margins. We were an inch away to get the win. Gutted.

It was a good away performance but for a deflating offside call. Hojlund offers pace and physicality and should be starting.

That was one of the cruelest finales to a match in a while for me. Utterly devastated for Garnacho, what a confidence boost it would've been for him.

We were strange in the first half but throughout the match we disarmed their attack, Martinelli kept at it but AWB was resilient and at some point Arsenal looked like a team that had simply run out of options.

For the last 30 minutes we were the dominant team and it feels as though the disallowed goal not only cost us in the obvious sense but psychologically too. You could see a few players lose their composure, if Garnacho hadn't scored, that would've ended 1-1.

There is nothing I despise more in the modern game than VAR. Those centimetres of Garnacho's shoulder that were 'offside' do not give him any sort of advantage against the defender - he had metres to spare by the time he got the shot off. Really hurtful finish.

Is it safe to assume we are already out of the Premier League title race?

We have the exact same points tally after 4 games as we had after 4 last year and with a bit more squad depth I think we could have mounted a bit of a challenge. So no.

We were also never ever going to challenge this season unless Hojlund lands with the ultimate case of hitting the floor running. So yes.

I agree injuries are hampering us but the first half was not because of injuries. Moreover it's not like our first 11 were setting the world alight with their amazing football. My biggest gripe is we have no semblance of control any match, no matter who we play. I can understand the loss considering they took the lead at the very end but it's not like they were not controlling the game till then. They didn't have too many chances but barring the last 20 mins we were barely pushing them either. Rasmus coming in would be huge I feel, but we have to start controlling the tempo a lot better if we intend to improve our play and our performances and results.

Yeah I don't disagree with the control part. This is something we have struggled with for ages. EtH still has a lot to do. I don't think our style has progressed sufficiently, and we're also very, very easy to score against. I just think this game in particular was a bit harsh on us. They did not deserve that.

But i'm with you overall.

Agreed. Good post.
Its not a good post. Some small positives are not enough. We are Man United. We have spent another £200m for the second window. Our manager is in his second season. We are still a mess, lightweight midfield, relying on a 20 year old novice for goals, back up centre backs are useless. We win nothing this season

I'm tired of these hard luck stories. It means feck all if we keep losing despite spending a small fortune to make us competitive.

Too much negativity on here. We actually played well and were desperately unlucky between the offside goal and loosing Martinez. The fact our replacements are either incapable or dodging nursing homes is another threads discussion. My main criticism is that Martial started. It's honestly a waste of 45 minutes. 3 - 1 is deeply flattering for Arsenal.

Someone should be out to rice for their second, the time and space he had to turn was criminal. I'd like to think Martinez would have been around him straight away . Losing 2 centre halves in a game like that is incredibly unlucky. Rasmus should have come on at half time, he looks a right handful.

You can tell Sky would have loved to have ignored the offside and Evans foul if not for ETH bringing it up.

We've been robbed really, we matched Arsenal for the whole game (as opposed to last season when we managed a half), and looked the more dangerous team.

Still, these things happen in football, it's great to see us being able to hold onto the ball at the back away, as opposed to booting it in fear.

Unless ETH knows something about Hojlund that everyone else doesn't, be prepared for a long season without a proper striker.

Yes let's write him off now after 30 minutes away to one of the better teams in the league.

You know better than that mate.

Can’t understand why people are saying we played well, I thought we were negative from the start and never looked like taking the game to Arsenal.
When was the last time we went away to one of the top teams and played them off the park?
Our passing and pressing is still shoddy and way off the top teams.
Rant over.
We played well considering the limitations we had.

Maguire and evans. It’s only right we lose.
I thought we played ok, 3-1 is harsh.
Liked the look of hoijlund, but we are miles off where we want to be away from home.

Spot on.

I thought we did well and we got unlucky with the injuries and that offside decision. Really need our CBs back and Maguire and Evans back on the bench after the international break.

Rasmus gonna get better too. He's a big positive. Really like what I saw. Arambat will help us a lot. Doesn't matter about the 3-1, no different to 2-1 - we still get nil points.

Just disappointed as a draw would have been fair.

Onwards.

Eth is pissed the angle they've had its Onside goal for Garnacho?? They won't show that angle now ? Deflection goal it's going into players.. lucky

You seem to be upset about this being the same pattern as last season. I figured reminding you of that disallowed goal might help you understand the difference. Evidently not.
The offside goals was a classic counter attack from us in the last mins of normal time. However you are taking that one counter as proof that we were better than last time. Last time we at least scored twice. This time we barely troubled their keeper. Did Ramsdale even have a stop to make barring Rashford's goal?

But I guess it's all fine because we scored a disallowed offside goal in the last few mins. Absolutely can see the logic in that.

A team that was trying to play football against a team that was trying to find its moments. Unsurprisingly, the former team won. Could have been a smash and grab victory for us, but, then again, Arsenal still look like a team that's struggling to integrate its two new midfielders. They don't look healthy at all. We should have been able to offer more on the ball.

Kudos to AWB and Dalot for being very solid in their defensive duties, especially AWB. Can't blame Antony for putting a shift in, either, chasing lost causes, keeping possession and earning yards for the whole team like it was American Football. Rashford found his moment and took it well, but it was nullified by the whole team falling asleep a minute later. Couldn't find another. Onana was good at the modern goalie stuff, bad at the traditional goalie stuff.

Maguire and Evans is comedy gold material for the banter thread.

We were much more solid in this game. Just switched off for the equaliser. Very fine margins between victory and defeat.

Then you'll never be happy mate. Good luck to you though.

So Maguire and Evans are the only 2 CBs we now have healthy. Unbelievable

No one is writing him off. He's just unproven and cost a lot of money. If he knocks in 25 goals then it will have been worth it. Otherwise, there will be lingering questions why we didn't strengthen the position over the summer, especially with Kane available.

Enough with 'we're Man United'. That stopped meaning anything the moment the Glazers bought the club. SAF held things together until he retired, but until they're gone this is what we are now. We aren't entitled to anything. Just be happy you got to live through a period of success.

I’d assume we’re not even in a top 4 race.

I don't think that's quite right. We're obviously not going to be in a title race this season, but I think we'll be in the battle for the CL places. I'm less certain than I was a month ago about our ability to finish top 4 (or rather top 5 this season), though - the early signs are that lack of form of key players and injuries are likely to make it an uphill task.

Yep.

No need to get too down. Need our preferred CBs back though. Fingers crossed their injuries aren't too bad.

We''ll be fine.
