EL W Europa League Quarter-Final 2nd Leg

Manchester United 2:1 Anderlecht

Post-match discussion

Credit to the lads, they stuck in there when the going got tough and won the game. The performance was decent, we were so wasteful yet again.

I know everyone is going on about the quality of the opposition but Anderlect were very organised. Also, the pressure that United were under to win this game was much more than we'd like to acknowledge especially given the fact that we were expected to beat Anderlect and if we didn't it would've been deemed a humiliating exit.

The longer the game went on, the frustration started to creep in and this could have resulted in heads falling and the effort dropping but it didn't. So credit where credit is due. We are in the semi-final of another competition.

Touch and go, should have won by more and they came close. I wouldn't have watched penalty shoot out, hate them! Now let's beat Burnley.

We went through to the other round but our attacking play is nothing to be proud of. Our best chances came due to opponents mistakes, we really look clueless in attack.

Anderlecht deserve no credit, should've been about 15-1.

For me we played excellent except the part from 15-45 mins.
We created a lot of chances, played some great moves.
But we payed huge price. Rojos and tlatans injuries looked bad. I am afraid that they are done for at least semi final.

We're luck that they took off arguably their two best players in the second half. Up to that point they dominated possession and the game IMO. Wins a win though.

Pretty much stopped playing after we got the 1-0 lead. Rojo injury might play a part in that but still we were brilliant before the first goal.

Just wished the Rashford rabona to Pogba bicycle kick would have gone in. Was it on target?

Exactly. Could very very easily have tailed off, or made a mistake that'd have seen us out.
After a season of games we've struggled to beat much worse teams, we did very well in the end.

Need to be a lot more clinical in the semi final though.

Shaw was awful first half hour, but managed to improve. One of the worst performances by Valencia is a long time. Blind was shaky too.

Finishing terrible. Pogba, Rashford were good.

He's a Everton/West Brom player and that's pretty obvious.

His attitude is better than Martial's. Martial just doesn't bother anymore. The same defender a tired Rashford ate alive on that left channel became dominant when Martial came on. Martial didn't beat him once.

Pretty crappy performance... It's all well and good fighting to get into the champions league through the euro league or by getting top 4, but if we keep playing crap football it's all for nothing.

Still, through we go. Be great to win it, but it'd be so much better to win it playing good football! Fingers crossed!

Did you even watch the game?

I meant to say his finishing and touch was not good. His energy and determination was top notch though but had we gone out of the tie - those sitters he missed would have been costly and the caf would have been fuming at Zlatan and Rashford.

Rashford is incredible. What a game he had. Pogba I thought was great as well, if not once again suffered from poor finishing. Mhki was great in only moments, but he was absolutely brilliant in those. Shaw and Valenica did very well defensively and Shaw put in an effort in attacking as well.

I feel bad for Martial today. He was given very little time and a lot of pressure to perform today. I can see why Jose was shouting at him for the first half performance and he responded reasonably well I think. It certainly won't help that people will naturally compare him to Rashford of today. I hope he will be given a proper chance to compete next game.

Just very, very poor finishing from us. Could have been a really embarrassing night.

Play like that in the next round and we'll be out

Fellaini is so underrated. I think he's a much better player in the last 3 months or so.

His knock-down for Pogba's disallowed goal should have counted. He did nothing wrong winning that ball.

Agreed. And that defender barely jumped, so how is that Fellaini's fault?

I know you know what you're saying by i still need to make the point: Being or playing good is not the same as getting a result.

And you cannot really compare standards of both teams either, can you?

I know that in the match it should be a level playing field but in the end different things are expected of us and them. Hence for me they've done well and we haven't. Credit where it's due that we got through but that wasn't down to us being anywhere near the expected level (and I'm talking this year's level, not Fergie times level).

We've underperformed though, sure. Burnley and Anderlecht played to their maximum I guess, we haven't.

I don't know how more straightforward I can explain it, sorry.

It's a minor thing, and it's tedious to discuss further but I wouldn't call Anderlecht's performance very very good even by their low standards which is what you think they have. A very very good performance would have been if they have pulled off an upset.

Rashford is improving game by game, Shaw and Pogba were absolutely colossal tonight too I thought.

Rashford was awful apart from the goal.

Really? Somewhere on these boards are a couple of posts from me saying Rashford is overrated and not very good. If someone on the caf wants to bake a humble pie with an extra serving of short and curlies baked in I'll take my large slice. I thought he looked mustard tonight.

Absolutely exhausting game. Season was on a knife edge and we just about overcame our wastefulness to get through. Considering how many minutes we've played this year, getting through another 120 was a massive ask. Sheer relief!

Deserved to go through, no doubt about that. The aftermath of this match will worry me. Tough away game to Burnley and then City at home. No rest and the squad keeps getting thinner.

Thank God it's over! Big, big win and I don't care it's Anderlecht. 2 more teams to beat to the trophy is all that matters in terms of the result.

Don't care also what everyone says about Fellaini. He was very good since he came on. Also, Carrick was immense in the last 60 minutes and fought till the very end when I was afraid his legs will go off. And, finally, this goal could be so important for Rashford's development and confidence. His progress under Jose is clear.

Downside, Rojo and Zlatan. We are already shaky in defense and this could be Zlatan last game of the season. Hoping for the best.

We're going into semantics indeed now but I'd go even further with praise for them (if I were a neutral, I'd be fecking mad if we lost to them) if they'd done us over.

Let's agree to disagree and just enjoy the fact that we're through. I'll proceed to be a miser cnut somewhere else I promise.

Now to be serious. Our ridiculous missing of chances was about to finally cost us the whole season and the only competition we're still in. It's not funny anymore. Can't imagine Jose's reaction if we hadn't qualified.

Heavy money investment in the offensive side heavily needed.

So Lyon, Celta Vigo and Ajax are the options. Who is the preference for all concerned and any chance of a poll @Damien
