Can someone explain Van Gaals philosophy to me?, and i don't mean that sarcastically, i genuinely don't have a clue.
I know he likes possession football which we certainly have done this season but everything after that, i'm lost.

United don't play like this every week...any fan can see tonight's performance was in stark contrast to the Hull/Stoke matches.

De Gea - 7
Valencia - 5
Evans - 5
Rojo - 4
Carrick - 5
Young - 6
Fellaini - 3
Mata - 5
Herrera - 6
Rooney - 2
RVP - 8

Smalling - 5
McNair - 4

An off night individually for most of the boys tonight. Rooney the worst of the bunch. Fellaini slowly got better though could have had a host of yellow cards. RVP's clinical finishing won the game despite there being no midfield control or grip from Utd in general on the game and how it was played.

2 points from today's game

1. We sorely miss blind linking the defense to midfield, having that player confident enough and efficient enough to pick up and play in that anchor role.

2. Our fans were freaking amazing again, best support in the league right now by a country mile.

Yep, when they sang LVG's red and white army for about 15 minutes straight! Fantastic effort.

If those chances fell to anyone other then Shane Long, Southampton would have won with ease
If Soton had Ronaldo playing for them, they'd have won with ease.

Fact: they don't and deserved to lose.

One of the best results of our season and one of the worse performances of our season.
I'm confused.

As has been said, we have to improve for when we play Liverpool. I don't really know how we weren't beat today but somehow we got the result and we are in a good position. Maybe now we can be a little more realistic and see getting top 4 as being a good enough target for this season.

I think we'll be better against Liverpool and with any luck, we won't see passing that bad for the rest of the season.

Train the brain and give jews a chance.

Listening to Radio 5 live and it's stunning (it's actually not) how much pundits hate United. "LvG has come over here with his so called tactical genius... spent £160 million..." Moyes was better. Steve Claridge (obviously, because he's a tosser) is having a meltdown and is hating the fact United won, saying all sorts of bollocks.

Kinnell we were shite but it's one game against Southampton, the in-form team in the league (overall). Yes they got battered by City and Chelsea but that means feck all. Doesn't mean they're going to be shit for ever now. We are not a finished team, LvG needs to sort his formation business out a bit - but fecks sake we are getting better and whereas last year we would win and then lose straight away, at least this year our "2 steps back" is a shit win against Southampton.

Can't be arsed to dissect that performance, we were shit, we won, feck off Southampton. Hopefully LvG bollocks them and we get our nuts down for Liverpool. I'll take a shit win like today again, though.
This. I agree with every word. Claridge is an absolute bellend. City have been just as sh*t as us in as many games this season. They've only played better in the past couple. Most BBC pundits just hate United because they've been so successful in the past 25 years.

We've drawn against Chelsea, lost against City, won against Arsenal and Southampton and the two victories were our worst performances.

I just disagree with the people who said we didn't deserve the win.

How do you define "deserve to win"? Soton didn't win because they were even more crap. It doesn't mean United were fascinating to watch today. 3 shots with one from set piece, another defensive mistake is hardly a performance worthy of United-class.
You would expect a team like United doing much much better. Atleast I would expect that. These wins are masking many issues in the team, specially defence and midfield.

1. Valencia was spectacularly poor today. He offered almost no support when he had possession on the right wing, which is part of role in this formation. Rooney had a go at him for not providing an outlet in the 2nd half and he also failed to make any kind of run in the 1st when Fellaini tried to pass the ball forward into space. Maybe LvG gave him instructions to stay back, but I think that unlikely.

2. McNair was terrible and was misplacing passes under little pressure. Not too worried. He's a young, talented kid and he'll get more chances. Good decision to take him off before halftime and bring in Herrera. Our ball retention was significantly better as soon as Herrera came on the field.

3. Mata had zero impact and in all honesty was worse than Fellaini, who also started poorly in possession, but I thought grew into the game, especially once Herrera came in to the game.

4. Carrick is great.

5. DDG once again demonstrated why he's the best keeper in the PL.

6. RVP's best performance all season today. His goals obviously were a great reward, but his hold up play tonight was simply amazing. Easily the best player on the pitch and he made the Southampton defenders look foolish.

7. Rooney was poor. Whatever. I'm not all that concerned. He definitely seems to relish playing in behind the strikers more than he does further forward now.

8. Young was tremendous both defensively and working hard to be an outlet moving forward when in possession. He has his limitations but he's earned his spot as a squad player. Very impressed by how comfortable he is when put under pressure in defensive positions.

You misunderstood my point...i didn't mean hammering as in the result, i meant in general play, as in losts of chances and shots on goal...but i was actually sticking up for the team hehe
I just don't think any team in this league has what it takes to "hammer" us.

The fact we have better players is exactly why we deserved to win despite playing badly. Excellent goalkeeping and finishing...

i agree. That was my point.

My other point was Soton players executed their gameplan properly while we didn't. Had Shane Long converted his header, no one would be saying they didn't deserve it up till that point.

*edit*

I just think Koeman saw how we crumble under constant pressing, even from back in Fergie's time. It was a typical "United going to pieces under high pressing" performance, maybe only slightly better, at best.

Thank feck LvG wasn't happy with that either, hope the team still got a bollocking.

"Spanish football writer Andy West on Twitter (BBC text again): Seems to me this Manchester United team being third in the table doesn't reflect very well on the quality of the Premier League. And I'm afraid to say, this Southampton team being fifth does much the same."

Jesus Christ who at the BBC pays these tw*ts to spew out this b*llshit. What a d*ckhead honestly.

I would define "deserve to win" as scoring more legal goals than your opposition whilst not seeing any controversial refereeing error(s).

I do not think United were fascinating to watch or played well at all.

One would also expect a United team to play better, but that doesn't mean we didn't deserve to win.

"We were the lucky team today"

"I said to the players at half time that they didn't show the confidence they show on the training pitch"

In terms of the quality of football, he has a point.

United, Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool have all been well below their expected levels this season.

Worst CM performance in the league since Park, Giggs and Scholes at the Etihad.

You can't mask something that is there for all to see. We all know the flaws, what many should be happy is how good LVG is, he has got one hell of a job rebuilding team during the mess of fergie leaving, and moyes horrible stint has manager. This manager is dealing with a pile up of injuries, and they are third.

That's as bad as we've played all season. Sitting deep and trying to play out from the back against a high press was idiotic.

Still, we won so that's something. We deserved a bit of luck at some point and we got it.

On the other hand, I guess Dortmund being in the relegation zone or thereabouts and going strong in the CL reflects greatly on the Bundesliga.

Nothing wrong with what he has said to be fair. United have been bad this season in around half the games (if not more), while Soton isn't that good. Both teams would have been significantly lower in the table if the league was as strong as some people like to believe.

We seem to love winning 2-1 don't we?

United 2-1 West Ham
United 2-1 Everton
United 2-1 Arsenal
United 2-1 Stoke
United 2-1 Southampton

A third of our games have been 2-1 wins, not that I'm complaining :D

You've got to remember Dylan, they'd planned on riding the crumbled empire shite for years post-Fergie. Its what kept them going while SAF won the lot. After one rubbish season, LvG is pissing on their parade with more walking wounded than the opening crash scene of Lost.

This "Yeah but..." garbage is all they have.

He always identifies when we are crap, but he doens't seem to have identified why. If he plays this system and team again, I'll be seriously worried about a blind spot.

He'll get back in the side when he's fit.

No he doesn't. Southampton have been playing great football until very recently and we have had our good our performances too. And this was still a great game from a neutral persective and in terms of an advert for the Premier League. He's just another bitter snob who hates United and has moved to Spain because he things that's where the real football is at.

Not sure what he's said wrong. We were both absolute garbage. So many terrible individual performances.

Can he topple Schmikes if he stays here long enough, performing like he has been?

I'd say yes. If he continues in this form for, say, 2-3 years, he'll be up there.

Schmeichel was very good, but there wasn't much between him and van der Sar, so it's completely possible for DDG to reach that level.

We really struggle when Blind or Carrick aren't there in that defensive midfield role to offer the defensive a pass and link up play to midfield. We just resort to hoofing it and invite pressure.

*bet on United 2-1 Liverpool*

Now watch us win 3-2 or 1-0... :nervous:

Steve Claridge on the BBC text feed:

"This game shows the gulf between the top two (Chelsea and Manchester City) and the rest in the Premier League."

"It was a really enjoyable game. Have I seen Southampton play better? Yes. Did they dominate and deserve to win? Yes. Manchester United got out of jail with two individual pieces of brilliance from Robin van Persie.

"Are United going in the right direction? Performance wise, certainly not. I watched Manchester City here two weeks ago and there's no comparison between Manchester City and Manchester United."

What a complete d*ckhead. Does he not f*cking realise how sh*t City have been apart from the last couple of games too. They've played better on hardly any more occasions than we have so far.

It seems he forgot the part where Aguero has been single-handedly keeping them in contention.

ABU pundits as usual...

United are dealing with a number of injuries that none of those teams, even Arsenal, can compare too. Despite that we're in 3rd with the 4th best goal difference in the league.

And that's probably his point.

Schmeichel was on another level to VDS. He's possibly the greatest keeper ever so DDG has some way to go.
