I don't know how LVG gets away with it but doesn't it feel great to win consistently again :D

RvP's overall play was deserving an 8/10 but with his two goals he easily deserves a 9/10.

Overall our defence were all over the place but we did look a lot better going forward after Herrera came on. Very pleased with that. We need pace for that 3-5-2 to work, so dunno why LvG started with it. But he made up with a very good tactical decision.

There's winning ugly and then there's creating nothing and playing on the ropes for 80 minutes, and we did the latter. Should have been found out today and vs Arsenal but LVG has some luck on his side. Hopefully he gets the defense sorted before too many more away games go by

This a great win, but a worrying performance.

I hate this formation, but i don't get the amount of misplaced passes tonight, we might have had a much easier night by just keeping our cool, i hope we learn from this.

A win against liverpool and we have one foot in the CL.

Nothing like him, this was just pure shit gifted by 2 errors. Even more mind boggling is that you have actually strung together a longer run of wins than we have. With SAF you still had a degree of control, even in the poorer games you won.
Yep.

RvP singlehandedly won us the game.
Should've been 1-3 by half time but at the end of the day, we got 3 points. Felt like old time already.

Notes I made at HT and some there now.

Content on playing it out wide - to our weakest attacking players - holding the ball up and playing down the wings -
not turning on the ball

constantly holding the ball up and playing it back - not taking opportunity to counter - TOO content on keeping possesion -
contrasts to how southampton set up

Need to know WHEN to keep possesion - and WHEN to make the most of counter attacking situations - know WHEN to make
the riskier pass to capitilise on rare counter moments - always looking to keep the ball - usually ends up with back 3 to keeper
then hoof and losing the ball

Can't cope with high pressure teams - a lot of them in the Prem - philosophy may have been more successful in other league
due to this - Utd need to start rushing the ball more to compete with these type of teams - teams will soon see how to
defeat Utd - Most teams in the world would find it difficult to pay against Southampton tonight, the amount of effort
they put in to rush the ball - but you need to compat this with pressure from ourselves - Looked like South wanted it more
Will can gaal be willing to tweak his philosophy to adapt to high pressure strategies, or will he be too stubborn -

IF not for Van Persie being so clinical - no way United could have won

Van Persie was excellent
Evans looked like he hadn't been out of the team at all
Herrera made United better on the break - just didn't try to capitilise as much - Think he is going to play a important role
in the future
Great to see Fellaini come in to the team this season and playing such an important role after receiving stick
off most fans - including myself

We didnt play well today but i think the injury to Smalling really disrupted things today. We looked controlled before he went off and Evans i thought just made us more shaky.

Still i'm loving how many match winners we have in this team. Rooney, Fellaini, Mata were all bad today but good to see RvP get us the points! Still a long way to go but until we get a proven (fit) CB we arent going to be very imposing

I only saw the last 25 minutes or so, it wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. An away game against a tough as feck team and we got the 3 points, that's all that matters.

Defence looked worse than usual though, I seriously hope Smalling's injury wasn't that bad.

Everyone bar RVP and Young were wank.Who cares though, 3 points and 3rd place.

5 wins in a row now. Make it 6 vs Scousers.

We were regularly rubbish in SAFs last season and RvP saved our bacon. It was a carbon copy of numerous performances, actually.

This wasn't a match between two teams, it was an exhibition of a player that is Robin van Persie.

Crap performance from most of our players, not helped by the abomination that is the 3-5-2, but three points is three points even if we rode our luck.

Yeah but this rubbish? 3 shots total? No passes into the box from open play?

I dunno man.

As long as we win I'm content. Not the performance we expected but would prefer to win playing poorly at the moment than play well and drop points.

Positives:
+RVP
+Young
+Carrick

Negatives:
-Everything else

Disgusting performance, but if RvP had an better performing forward next to him, I think we could have won comfortably. Both Rooney and Mata were pisspoor, which is a shame as Rooney has been playing very well recently. If he misses even one game, it's like he needs another pre-season to get back on it.

Even when we went 2-1 up, I didn't think we'd get the points. Southampton didn't threaten anywhere near as much in the 2nd half. They'll be disappointed they didn't go for it more.

Typical defensive injury to an in-form defender. I was really hoping Smalling would kick on and keep his place in the side. It looked like the usual tiny niggle he always gets, yet they keep him out for months at a time. Urgh.

Great result. Southampton didn't deserve anything out of that though, we were poor in the first half on the ball but they really didn't do much. All they did was hoof it pretty much, they hardly troubled de gea apart from that Long chance and the Pelle chance. Van Persie was brilliant today, was back in his form from his first season here. Quick, fantastic hold up play and clinical. Relieved he didn't get injured from that awful tackle by Mane, no idea how he stayed on the pitch.

Evans clearly still very rusty. Carrick was class and was key in defence. Fellaini was dreadful in the first half, better in the second but still really bad on the ball. Also he really likes running in with the elbows. Herrera is just in a different class to him, changed the game for us again when he came on. Gives us so much both offensively and with his pressing.

Rooney wasn't at his best though, didn't have much go his way but put in a shift as always. Huge win though and it looks like we're starting to open up the gap between 3rd, and the rest.

Our luck will run out playing like that. The 3-5-2 has to stop. Great that we keep the winning run going though. Southampton are on the slide.

We were never just going to turn up and dominate 3rd place Southampton in their own back yard. Some overly fussy people about (mainly referrinb to the matchday thead at half time). Great win tonight, however it came. 5 on the bounce, fantastic.

I don't care if we play good football, right now we need results, nothing else. We're under immense pressure to produce after investing 150 million into our roster this summer, so I'm not gonna sing too many praises on van Gaal or anybody because this is just what you have to expect.

We've started not pissing away points like we did at the start of the season. Can guarantee that this would have ended with dropped points if we'd played it in August or September.

We're on the road to a title challenge. If it's this season or next, it's coming like a freight train. Loving it, even if I'd prefer to see us play some better football.

Absolutely pissed off with Smalling's injury. What the feck are our defenders made of? Steven Spielberg could save money on special effects for the next epic Indiana Jones death scene by just filming one of our defenders until they disintegrate/explode/vaporize/melt/crumble to dust.

5 ahead of Arsenal and 7 ahead of Liverpool. We could be 10 points ahead of Liverpool by Sunday evening.

Good times. This kind of win will be great for the confidence. Keeps the momentum going and the belief growing.

I don't know about the 352 but it worked against Arsenal and now here. I've seen us play some pretty shite stuff with a back four before. Fluke or all part of the masterplan, who knows?

Awful performance. Without exagerating, it was the worst I have seen us playing and still win. 15-3 on shoots for Soton, we created pretty much nothing for 90 minutes. God, I hate this fecking formation. We're shite every time we use it.

Getting 3 points is good, on the other side. Robin is back, and De Gea is simply ridiculously good. Has saved us lots of point this season.

I hope we go back to diamond and Di Maria is back for Liverpool. Otherwise, I would be scpetic for that game, regardless that they have been even worse than us this season.

Fantastic result, very dodgy performance. I'm very keen to hear Van Gaal explain why we started the game as we did because our negative approach nearly cost us. We created sweet F.A. in the first half until Herrera came on and Southampton could have been out of sight by that point. I accept that losing Smalling set the cat among the pigeons at the back for us but even before that we had nothing in midfield. Our game plan seemed to be just hit it long to Fellaini and hope for knock ons. When you're up against players like Wanyama how successful is that approach ever gonna be?

Improved a lot in the second half, at least tried to play some football, and I feel we deserved it in the end (even if St David De Gea bailed us out again a few times!). Special mention to Robin Van Persie. Two clear chances for him in this game led to two goals. He's been slated for missing so-called easy chances lately. That should shut his critics up for a bit.

People forget how shit our football was that season, seriously. In fact this was actually maybe better because at least it didn't take going behind first for us to come back and win.
