Post match v Liverpool

The two batterings we took off them last season hurt a lot more, because we were genuinely shit then and they were genuinely good then. Neither of those things are true now.

It may be fitness, it may be weak mentality I cannot say for certain and I don't know if we didn't try, I think it's quite obvious that our players were super annoyed and enraged by the result and they completely lost their heads and tactical awareness. Also trying to score, which we did, after 3-0 and going forward was the nail in the coffin, we left too much space for them to counter us which lead to many goals.
There are times when you just have to accept it's not your day and try to limit the damages.

But we've been playing more than well enough to avoid conceding six goals in one half of football against a Liverpool team that has struggled this season. I can't give any rational explanation for how it happened. In the second half some of the players downed tools, and not for the first time. It's criminal from professional players who are paid millions each.

That's true but a defeat of some sort has been coming for a while.

Madrid could have scored 10 at anfield if they wanted but didn't because they are a proper elite club. klopp just wanted to humiliate ETH. The best way to respond should be by winning another trophy. This is what makes klopp and pep burn from inside.

We lost the game due to errors but the tactical plan was working in the first half.

And it wasn't about trying to get on top but rather about playing a certain way which has served us well so far this season where we've won 16 of the 21 games played since the world cup and drawn three. And if we had lost with Sabitzer in the team, then another player who didn't start should've played in a hypothetical scenario.

The truth is it was a very bad day at the office and we were playing a team that has been coached to build through the thirds starting with their goalkeeper. And you can't hand Liverpool a two goal lead on a plate like Fred and Shaw did with really basic errors at Anfield.
We have a different understanding of the word “working”. If you’re losing it’s not working.

They're so outclassed they lost their cool. They didn't stop trying.
What are you on about? What was class about the goals Liverpool scored??? I have never seen a team be handed so many goals on a plate before. That was the easiest win Liverpool will ever have…bar their first goal which was a decent pass…we just looked like we forgot how to clear a fuking ball.

their second there was any number of half tackles and poor deflections - third Gakpo litteraly runs 30 yards with no one tracking and Martinez falls on his arse…4th McT plays fuking pinball and the gods place the ball on a golf tee for Salah…do I need to continue? Nothing about those goals that required Liverpool to outclass us. We just failed to do the very basics ….they were ordinary.

Oh yes, we all know that this United team isn't the finished article. Ten Hag is only just in the door and is doing a very good job, but there's a long way to go. But there's defeat and there's disgrace, and nobody saw that coming. I thought the days of being destroyed by rivals were gone. Some of our players aren't mentally strong enough when things get difficult.

Close up shop?

What a loser mentality really, Ten Hag is willing to lose 7-0 for the off chance of a comeback. He's risking it for a win. A loss is a loss anyway, only the media and fans will get on his back for it. But I respect him willing to take risks.

When you have a tiring season like this, a setback is bound to happen. Move the fck on.

Well I'd rather lose 1 game 7 nil than 7 games 1 nil. Still In with big chances to win another trophy. This is what you have to move forward with. Put up with the stick for 1 or 2 days it will go away next week when there something else to chirp about. Man UTD is always Biggest news .

The papers can't get enough of it. We will hear about this for a long long time. For all the positivity EtH brought to this team this result is a huge huge setback.

In terms of club image and perception yes, huge huge setback, in terms of season outcome, it's just a defeat. We have many many other games left to shake it off.

Of course, and we will just have to accept the ridicule until we put it right. It's a huge setback, like you say, but ETH will do whatever is required to rectify it. After a few great weeks we are feeling rock bottom again, and we will until we get some good wins.

Not denying it's hard to stomach because it's Liverpool and of course the margin of the defeat.

However, if EtH and the squad manage to learn from the defeat it's realistically losing 3 points on a weekend when both our closest competitors lost their games. The overall season has so far been beyond our expectations from where we were last season.

There's no doubt Liverpool is our biggest rival but as long we finish top 4 then we will have a better season than them. Who'd have thought at the beginning of the season?

Just trying to bring some positivity to the thread early this morning.

Much appreciated. I'm going to log out now and make this the only thing I read on here today, before I get sucked into the bollocks that other people are writing.

But we haven't. We've just been getting results. We've beengetting outplayed for big chunks of ganes, fortunate the opposition haven't taken advantage whilst being super clinical ourselves.

I've been saying this for a few weeks but the ETH hysteria has got to a few fans.
This simply isn’t true at all.

True true.

Its not even the fact we lost, its the fact you think "wow, finally, we have a team that won't disappoint us from now on", then they go and do that...

I’m pretty sure none of the risks we were taking in that second half were endorsed by ETH

You two need to give your heads a huge wobble.

At the end of the season, we’ll have silverware (hopefully more than just the CC) and Liverpool will have, um, what’s awarded for beating a team 7-0 again? Oh yeah, nothing.

Do you think any Arsenal fans will still give a shit that we demolished them 8-2 all those years ago if they win the league this season? Do you think any Liverpool fans today still care that the mighty Villa put as many goals past them in 2020 as they put past us today?

Come the end of this season, if we finish top 4 with the Carabao cup at ETH’s first attempt, that is really good. If we can finish top 4 with two or three cups in ETH’s first season that will be phenomenal, and one shitty result at Anfield won’t have changed a thing.
Results in big matches absolutely matter more than you think they do as far as recall value is concerned.
A similar argument could also be made about why it matters so much that you won some tin pot cup several moons ago which is now just a statistic. Pool did not win the league that year in 2009 but the 4-1 defeat at OT and the manner in which they did it is something they fondly remember till date.

It was a one goal game going into the second half. I'm sure ETH had planned to win the game before it got out of hand. Early goals threw any game plan out the window,.

Yeah it was definitely a freak result. Every rebound and second ball fell in to their path. That doesn't hide the fact united were atrocious and showed a lack of anything in the second half.

Bruno has been one of my favourite players since signing for united but I feel he should be stripped of the captaincy and dropped. He was a disgrace yesterday. Not just his performance. His attitude stinks. Not befitting a captain of Manchester United. May be an overreaction on my part but standing in the centre of the pitch whinging and whining while united are getting battered I don't think I'd be too fussed if he never pulled the shirt on again. However in a few days when this dies down I may hold my hands up and admit thats an overreaction. Shambles yesterday.

You've got to first try and understand what ten Hag was trying to do and not what you believe he should've done. It's not as simple as changing the composition of the midfield when that wasn't the problem to go begin with. Midfielders can't control games if the opponent is successfully flooding one's defensive third. That's why the goalkeeper is very important towards creating the first superiority in the build up phase.

And I'm not the only one that said things were working well in that first half. And remember you have to take into consideration the weakness of the keeper on the ball in combination with other weaknesses in the build up phase, hence ten Hag having to compromise on his principles of play against a high pressing Liverpool team at Anfield. The issue was never the first half but rather what happened in the second half after Shaw's error which gave Liverpool a 2-0 lead.

Why did the players lose their heads, lose their positional discipline and in some cases seem to have given up, which is my focus of attention.

Watched the low lights again this morning, every single goal was just given to them. They didn't even have to work hard for any of them, that second half was an utter disgrace. I hope ETH has them in early this morning and makes them watch each goal over and over for hours on end.

You have to hand it to Liverpool they didn't give a fcuk, they were fecking ruthless and their players enjoyed every fecking minute of it. This will probably spur these cnuts on to smash Madrid and go and make a run for top 4 now.

After reflecting on the game I think the most shocking thing is that not a single player comes out of that game for us with any credit.

Usually when you get battered you can say that at least one or two players did ok but yesterday I don't think a single player played any better than poor.

You can maybe let off someone like Garnacho since they are young and it was an impossible game for him but it really was the ultimately terrible team performance.

Does anyone remember any other game where not even a single player did ok?

After a catastrophic match like yesterday's, it's not even worth going to the manager's thread or player threads. So many things went wrong that you just have to try and turn your back on it and forget.

IF someone said at halftime we'd lose 7-0 they'd have rightly been called crazy. It was a mentally upside down and weird game.

All that matters now is thursday. We must bounce back well.

You're absolutely correct. We gave every single goal to them.

It is pointless getting angry about that result. It was a freak result. Deflated yes, but season defining? No. Let's just regroup, forge ahead and make the best of the season.
We are on course to have a better season than the scousers, so no worries.
Pretty sure this would never happen again.

I don't feel angry. Just feel speechless, I don't know what to say, what to feel basically. It's tiring losing to Liverpool like this, it's always ugly

You watched it again?! Bloody hell.

But you’re right, the goals were given so easily. I couldn’t fathom what I was watching in that second half. We made it so easy for them.

Yeah, I just couldn't help myself.

When you just watch the goals back they are all just fecking awful, you would be hard pushed to find worse goals in a Sunday league game.

If Partey is playing for Arsenal (and Ivan Toney for Brentford) would it not have been better for United to accept the legal situation and get MG back into the team. I read recently the lady whom all that kerfuffle was over is now pregnant with his baby!

P.S. I haven't heard the recordings, I don't want to for personal reasons.
You are pushing your luck in this thread mate, be careful.

I cant lie, this is the worst I've felt after a football match. Maybe losing the league in the last second to city come close. But the wonderful thing about football and united in specific, it will be memories when Manchester United bounce back to win trophies. United's history and prestige will always be bigger than isolated incidents.

Are we all hurting? Yes
Will this remain in our painful memories for a very very long time? Absolutely
Was that a deserved loss irrespective of the low number of amount shots? Certainly

I have seen Chelsea scoring 5, City scoring 6,Torres destroy us numerous times home and away, however, this does feel like the lowest point.

There is literally two ways this can go,

1) We derail an excellent season by getting knocked out of EL with a few more league losses.
2) We remove all complacency and come back with increased focus which catapults us to at least another cup victory.

If it's the latter, then losing 7-0 won't feel the worst thing in the world at the end of the season, so hang in there my brothers and we will suffer together, but let's continue to support and believe in this team and manager.

Yeah, I feel the same mate. I just wanted to let people know that it is not a false dawn with ETH and this team.
You learn more from adversity than from the good times and this is just a bump on our way to resurgence.
The team still needs addition especially a midfielder capable of holding to the ball under pressure and a striker capable of holding to the ball in front. We need to be astute with our next signings.
Too many percentage players especially in midfield - Casemiro, Fred and Bruno.

It was very similar to how we beat Southampton 9-0 in terms of how easily the goals were given up, our defending was gutless and effortless. We were so poor, and practically every attempt they had went in.

I hope the manager makes them all suffer for this.

Am I the only one who isn't that bothered by the result? I mean yeah it always sucks to lose 0-7 but I'm not extra disappointed beyond that. There's clearly progress being made this season and one game doesn't erase that. We've beat City and Barca so far this season, two of the top teams in world football and we've already won a trophy!

Also, I'm having big problems formatting posts on mobile today. Not sure if that's just me.

You're not a United fan if this doesn't bother you.
