Possible terrorist attack in Brooklyn subway | Suspect arrested

I imagine at this point it can be merged into the other thread as just another day in America.

Sadly.

Cue outrage for 24 hours.....spotlight on gun control/use.....reminder of constitutional rights.....move on.

Fortunately nothing could have altered those 2021 stats.

You blaming the cops for not preventing this?

Without stepping up stop and search how do you propose they do that?

RiP to all the victims.

Edit on re read that sounds very snarky, it wasn't intended

No deaths so far thankfully.

How does it work in NYC? Do they have specific transit commission cops like we do in Toronto or is it done by the NYPD?

it's nypd cops. they stand around staring at their cell phones. with breaks in between to harass teenagers, or ladies selling churros or beating up homeless people

Amazing that no deaths have been reported. Last I heard some were in critical but stable condition.

At that range, you really would expect the worst. Might suggest someone who was not particularly well-trained.

Not being treated as a terrorist incident, according to the report on BBC.

Just one of the well regulated militia members.

All the photos show people shot in the legs. So either intentional or not very bright considering the smoke grenade they threw as well.

A 1970s children's toy would probably have done more damage than what this guy did with an actual gun today.

Glad it wasn't worse.

Only worrying thing is, where there is one, there will be more waiting to do the same or worse.

Uber & Lyft surge priced in Brooklyn an hour after the shooting.

There’s plenty to complain about those companies for, but those surges are automatic based on demand, it’s not like someone sat there and decided to cash in on the event.

Didn’t know that. Use those services so infrequently.

I believe there have been complaints in the past of how it is not so automatic and can be gamed.

I’m sure there have, doesn’t make them accurate. These things are driven by algorithms.

Both companies implemented caps on pricing once it was noticed and are refunding people who were impacted.

This is the equivalent of me setting up a trap and then telling the trapped that it's the trap that trapped them, not me.

Those algorithms are written to take advantage of events. They don't just "do stuff".

The algos run on supply and demand. That's how every business works. If that demand is generated by a tragedy the system doesn't know that.

Yes, of course they do. And no one could have predicted that an attack on a transportation network would increase demand or that transportation networks could be likely targets. I mean, who would have ever thought of that?

(All i'm saying it's laughable to point at the algorithm when it did exactly what it's supposed to)

What’s laughable is trying to suggest that the prices were raised because of a shooting in an attempt to profit from the tragedy.

If you want to debate the merits of surge pricing in general that’s perfectly legitimate but take it to another thread because it has bugger all to do with this one.

Who in this thread even suggested that?

I mean, enough organised black people with guns and the NRA will start trying to ban guns again...

Yep, it's literally what happened in the 60's (which I know is what you were referring to). Never need much of an excuse to recommend this podcast to anyone who wants to understand the weird, and VERY recent American interest in the second amendment.
