Positives from yesterday

There were plenty of positives from yesterday, Bruno was great, Garnacho was great, looked like a functional attacking team for large parts, even the pressing has improved. The set-piece errors and Onana were unforgivable. But the last few games I'd be more encouraged about the season. Couldn't be any worse than earlier in the season where the team was completely dysfunctional tbh, but still there were some positives. The team that played yesterday could challenge top 4-6, whereas the team earlier in the season was heading for mid-table.

Positives for me:
  • I'd much rather watch chaos games with lots of chances than shit games with few chances and us just keeping the ball among the defenders
  • Mainoo is class and is such a rare type of player
  • Hojlund has huge potential, but people overestimate how much a 20 year old CF like him should be doing
  • Garnacho has huge potential
  • I am optimistic that Ratcliffe will eventually come on and bring in a new structure. And I feel like he'll just want to get it right, which alone will be a big difference
  • I can see pieces of a very good team and a few of the "rare" type of players which usually holds you back actually there, just needing to be developed
Goalkeeper

DM - Mainoo
RW - CAM - Garnacho
Hojlund

We really have a strong left half of the team, potential wise and current ability wise. Obviously Bruno is quality, but I do think in the long term with his age it's a position that will need sorting, especially I'm looking at it from the perspective of Martinez, Mainoo, Garnacho and Hojlund should be the core for the next top team we have. Others that are there now can fill gaps and be important squad players, but I suspect we'll need to fill the gaps. But generally... There are more quality RCB's around than LCB. It's easier to find a partner for Mainoo than finding the Mainoo type of player, who is press resistant and that first phase build up guy. It's easier to find a #10 than it is a well rounded CF who can hold up the play and play the lone role.

Right wing is the main thing where that's much harder to sort out than left wing, so we still need to look at that. Hopefully Amad comes in and can actually be the guy there, I'm skeptical on that though. And right back is a weird one where it's not bad but not great. Shaw isn't young either, but he's still world class and I can see him being quality for multiple years to come, but I guess that's more an injury concern with him.

No matter how grim it ever looks, I genuinely don't think clubs like United are ever that far away from sorting it out and being a top team again.

Think this is the same vid

If they created like that every week and didn't always have the capacity to screw up and give away cheap goals. I don't think we could have many complaints.

But being honest, that' forward line only works like that because a certain individual wasn't on the pitch offering feck all.

Put that certain individual in that game those last 20 minutes and he probably scores a couple, let's be honest. He's not ideal for some types of games, but the amount of space on show yesterday is the exact situation he's always thrived in. Teams usually shut him down by just not giving him that much space to run in to.

What I like about that clip is that the good football involved a lot more than just our forward line. Some of the nicest moves of all began with Onana in possession.

Yea, agreed.

For me, positives were:
- two periods of quality transition play (1st 20 and last 20 mins).
- brilliant finishing for 55 mins.
- Antony best game of the season
- We now have five goals from attacking players in the last two games.
- Garnacho and Mainoo are just fun to watch, even if variable.
- Something resembling a normal back four (and OGS prime choice) played for over an hour.
- Going 3-1 up in Hell Stadium in a must win in stormy wetaher and against experienced opponents, is very impressive given where we’ve been.
- We’ve taken or increased the lead nine times in the last four CL games!

Now I need to shut up completely.

yeah there have been some positives in the last two games. I have to be honest and say some of the 1-0 and 2-1 wins against the likes of Sheffield and Brentford were awful to watch and reminded me of the darker days of Jose and Ole but last night and Everton had some good attacking play

the way we opened up space and played from the back for the McTominay goal was really nice

Antony, Bruno, Garnacho, Mainoo and even our defense (in large parts) were positives yesterday. Our CM is still a huge worry though. We miss the Casemiro of last season. And the less said about our gk the better.

@bosnian_red posted a tweet (since taken down) which was a compilation of our attacking football in the last 10 minutes of the game (heavily featuring Mainoo) and it looked like the closest thing I've seen to the football Ajax were playing under ETH. If that's a glimpse of things to come then bring it on.
Can you repost it ? Would love to see it.

If you want to just look at the mistakes, you can just moan about it the whole week. Since Shaw and Mainoo is back, I am actually seeing lot of changes in our play. (Who knew this ).

When was the last time we were so dominant in Europe playing away ?should have scored 5 goals minimum. Antony and Bruno was very good. Ultimately lack of quality backup ruined it. If we had a capable bench instead of Martial or Pellistri, we would have won it.

Our playing out from back was very good. Onana was very key in that. I loved his half way dribble and cross pass. Let's forget his mistakes for now.

Defence did great. People keep saying they had 52% possession and 16 shots. I don't think ETH cares about having possession. Let's talk about real chances - They had an xg of 1.5.

Things are falling in place. If no injuries, we would be a good team by Jan. Hopefully ETH is backed in January by a proper dof and not his signings.

We’re now scoring goals which as been a big problem.

Nah, some of the runs, passes and movements that were made to create space and chances, he wouldn't have made them.

You can solve that with a CM who is more willing to stay behind, but I would also think that if the defense pushed up quicker, it would make the middle more compact, while still giving our attack the same potency. The problem comes from the fact that our CBs have no pace so we all know through instruction that the middle will be porous.

Yeah, it was nice, back to front with 3/4 passes, some swift passing and movement all starting from the keeper. It was helped in part by how open Galatasaray play I suppose.

We know all about his other issues, but if he could just stop making those silly handling and positioning errors on goals. He's not such a liability.

United is more likely to hit panic mode and change manager mid-way through season, though. You know how this club functions.

Bear in mind though: Gala at this point looked very tired, played gung ho themselves and had a very high line. I'd be very surprised to see that kind of football a lot more this season.

Maybe. But there’s been plenty of times over the last season and a half where we’ve been chasing a game against tired opposition and looked completely clueless and toothless. Limping towards the final whistle. So this was at the very least a nice change. And it was the transition from defence to attack that impressed me most. Which was before we got through to their high line.

the main positive i can think of is that the game’s over and it can’t hurt me any more.

I think even with the players we have now, a proper CM and a proper CB would elevate us about 10 notches.

Positive from last 2 away games is they didn't crumble.. Everton was hostile so was Galatasary even more..
There a bit more cohesive in over all play, still sketchy at the back , but better Shaw is back.. then we got a inconsistent Keeper which is a minus

I agree. Mainoo will be instrumental I assume. He's confident on the ball and not scared to receive it deep and under pressure. Carries the ball very well the lad.
