Gaming Pokémon Strumfest

Currently playing Pokémon blaze black 2 redux
The jump in difficulty even on the normal mode is wild  I had to spam revives to beat the 5th gym.

Some things I really like: changing Charizard to a fire/dragon is a great change

Buffing some weaker Pokémon like Butterfree making them a lot more usable is really cool

My team currently:
Charizard
Arbok
Serperior
Braviary
Metagross
Lanturn

Gen 5 sprites look so much better than the modern 3D models. I think this is the pinnacle of the series along with heartgold/soulsilver

Is this a hacked game? I heard some of them are actually really good

Yeah it's keeps the same story as the original games but adds things like increased difficulty and better Pokémon variety on the routes. Easy to download and play on your phone with an emulator!

I brought what I thought was Black 2 for the ds, it turned out to be a very hard version and I haven’t got past Elesa, she has Emolgawhich know U turn as well as volt switch, Ampharos, Eletrabuzz which has Ice punch and life Orb, Lanturn which has the air balloon as the item and her ace Zebstrika has Bounce, volt switch, Overheat, All level 33-35. When Pokémon around are low 20’s it’s a bitch to level 6 Pokémon to 40+.

I managed to do it thanks to reviving my Lucario twice

Heard good things about Fire Red: Rocket edition as far as hacked ROMs go. Absolutely loving it so far! LT Surge takes steroids and the underground path is a brothel

Does anyone play VGC competitively? Maybe @Havak if I remember? Looking to get into it and whether there’s any good resources around

I did! I was mainly involved from 2009-2016ish. I've kept in the loop, played some competitive games online in the games after Sun & Moon, but haven't had the time to take it as seriously these days. I am thinking about giving it a whirl one last time when we get the 10th generation and maybe put in the effort to go to Worlds for the 30th anniversary in 2026.

For a decent stretch of time I was probably one of the best players from the UK, but the game has grown massively now compared to when I played! I got top 8, top 16, top 32 in the UK Nationals and had some good runs through the Regional and smaller events.

What's odd is I think the resources were slightly better at this middling period between when I was starting to tail off and the new age, which shouldn't be the case. Pokemon YouTubers were barely a thing even 10 years ago. Some still put out good content, but I feel like not many do much these days in terms of utility for new players to learn the basics. Somewhat understandable I suppose, as to keep things ticking over they'll be focusing on current things.

However, when new games come out, that seems to be when people go back to making tutorial style videos (as new players are more likely to take up competitive play and old players will want to know how/where is best to train Pokemon). You can probably search through some old videos from around the time Scarlet/Violet came out to get things like EV Training, breeding, catching, Hyper Training advice etc. However, a lot of that is quite straightforward these days and it will be more about team building and decision making. I think a lot of players will try to charge for coaching nowadays, but I can signpost to some players.

For every day content that caters to everything, my friend Lee has one of the best channels these days IMO. His channel is called Osirus Studios. He has made lots of guides in the past, but tends to focus on strategies to beat the 7-star Raid Bosses lately as that's the only real ongoing content in the games.

Aaron 'Cybertron' Zheng does a really good series where he takes teams made by other good players, talks about the strategy, strengths and weaknesses, and then plays a few games with the team so you can see how he'd made decisions. He was a very good player back when I was playing. Probably still is now.

Wolfe Glick makes really good content now and he's a previous World Champion and runner-up. I think he's one of only two players who has made the final on more than one occasion. Loads of other accomplishments etc.

As for websites, this is where it gets a bit more scarce now. I used to work on a site called Nugget Bridge that had lots of good stuff on it and a forum. But internet forums and websites just seemed to keep falling away, a lot of VGC discussion moves to Twitter which kind of sucks. It's hard to explain why, but that seems to be everyone's preference. I think it's just oldies like me that like everything organized in a forum

This is the only website I know of that keeps things a bit up to date. I can still probably help with some general advice and how to train particular Pokemon.

You star cheers mate! I’ll look through that. Yeah I think that’s what I’ve found is so much now is done through YouTube videos and twitter but I like a good old fashioned article to read through

Maybe we can have a battle once I’ve finally managed to sort a team, I know you can rent but making the team is half the fun for me

the only thing that puts me off about playing Pokemon competitively is that you actually have to take into consideration IVs and nature and all that crap

It’s much easier these days, you can get items to edit natures and stats and all that rather than have to do it like you used to

Yeah man, I'd be down for some battles! I think this coming season will be a good one to start with. They have somewhat recently changed how the seasons work in terms of rules (from Sword & Shield onward iirc). Instead of using the same ruleset for an entire year, they have started to change the rules part way through to somewhat mimic the TCG (they get new card expansion sets every three months which changes the metagame). So, VGC tends to change the usable Pokemon 3-4 times in a season as well now.

For Scarlet & Violet starting next month (I think, I'd have to double check which I should probably have done before writing this post but alas), the ruleset is actually banning every Legendary Pokemon. This is something that's never been done before, as normally the Legendary Pokemon that aren't the extremely powerful cover art ones are allowed. Eg. Articuno, Raikou, Regirock, Heatran, Terrakion etc. Most of these have base stat totals of 600 or less which some Pokemon such as Tyranitar, Salamence, Garchomp etc have.

This will probably be good for beginners to not have to worry about these Pokemon right away, and makes it much accessible for people who haven't been able to catch them or don't have access to everything. But just bear in mind that probably around Christmas time, the rules could reintroduce some of those Pokemon and you'd have to build new teams most likely. Some styles of team you can largely build with the same pool of Pokemon if it has a specific theme like a Rain team or Trick Room for example. Probably best for beginners to build something like that before more complex 'good stuff' teams.

Who are some YouTubers or twitch streamers etc. that you recommend?

Annoyingly no that’s why im tapping up Havak  I’ve just been searching in YouTube for random vids at the moment

Yea I’m super excited about this format tbf, looks like more Pokémon I really like become a bit more viable, I’m watching videos about Clawitzer and he’s my boy

Yeah, it looks interesting. I haven't really made a remotely competitive team bar the first few months of Scarlet & Violet meta, which is actually probably a good thing to help in building for this one. I think some of the Pokemon I had built back then could be usable again now. If you want to DM me your Switch details I'll add you - I'll probably have some spare Pokemon I can throw your way to use/breed from.

Despite all of the improvements to making any old Pokemon competitively ready, it is still somewhat resource heavy in terms of in-game money and items. So, it is still quite often worth breeding some Pokemon, particularly if you want them in a certain Pokeball without using up your stock. Although, I would definitely search Osirus' YouTube channel or another tutorial on the exploit of the Item Printer machine in the Blueberry Academy DLC. You can RNG manipulate the items it drops which helps in terms of either getting the good items or making lots of the highest selling item (Ability Patch) in order to make loads of money and buy Vitamins and all the competitive held items etc. It's a very simple process as well!

Looks like we have 8 official online events this season in VGC, starting in September. There are also tournaments in October, December, January, February, March, April and May. These tend to run Fri-Sun, with a cap of 15~ battles per day (if you don't do all of the battles on a given day they carry forward to the next day). It's basically just like playing the online random battle ladder. You start with a rating of 1500 and it will increase with wins/decrease with losses. See how high you can go, if you beat someone much higher than you you'll gain more and vice versa, although the matching system will try to pair you with someone as close to your rating as possible. Make sure you have a Pokemon Trainer Club ID on the official Pokemon website and link it with your game.

I tried. It’s more card collecting than TCG. You only have 20 cards and energy is generated each turn. Some cards are different as well.

Have the Pokémon itch and was considering getting the DLC for scarlet and violet. Turned the base game on for the first time in a year and immediately remembered how much I hate everything about those games. Jesus Christ they're ugly

Gen 8 and 9 are huge colossal turds and gamefreak have a lot to do to win back my confidence with gen 10

For anyone playing the new TCG!

I need friends for the missions so would appreciate it.

I'm quite enjoying the battling in TCGP. I just wish there was ranked battles because I feel bad coming up against someone who has a starter deck and I whip out my two Mewtwo EX's
It's lame that battling doesn't really give you anything other than EXP too. If 10 wins = opening a pack it would give a lot more incentive to open the app

I've been mainlining the romhack, Radical red. All other Pokémon games are now ruined due to the quality of life features and difficulty in the hack.

Is that the one where you basically have to make a new team for every gym because it's so difficult?

Ha, not quite. On the standard difficulty you do need to use sensibly made teams, but can generally get away without mega optimising for each battle. There's a million ways to victory so you can do monotypes or whatever type of run variations without the difficulty being punishing.

You do need to use TMs etc well mind. They're all infinitely reusable and you can swap out moves with ease. There's also a minimal grinding mode with no EV and max IVs, which I'd recommend anyone to use. There's built in rare candy cheats and 100% catch rate if you want etc, which mean the focus is entirely on battling and strategy.

On hardcore mode, you still don't need to change every gym, but there are certain gyms/battles where there are restrictions in place such as permanent trick rooms or 1/4 speed for your team etc. More than possible to overcome, but just need to use your brain a bit. All in all the game truly has ruined Pokémon for me, it's like a vision of what Pokémon could be if if it respected your time and had difficulty options.

What other romhacks have you played? I’ve finished Brown and Fire Red: Team Rocket Edition (the latter is really, really good. I’d suggest giving it a go if you haven’t yet). I have prism but I’ve not gave it a crack yet. I’ve heard the likes of Polished Crystal and some of the Emerald hacks are up there with the best

Pokémon Unbound, Inclement Emerald, Emerald Rogue, Fire red rocket edition are the ones I've tried.

All very good in their own way - unbound being a definite highlight. Inclement Emerald also top notch. But I keep coming back to Radical red due to its replayability.

I love this TCG. I'm glad I am not rich as I would spend all my money opening packs.

Not at all, it has difficulty modes, Casual is basically vanilla Pokémon difficulty, expert is "I know what smogon tier lists are", and hardcore is closer to radical red difficulty. It's the closest of all the romhacks I've played to being a mainline game.
