Gaming PlayStation 5

There is no such thing as a consumer 8k tv yet

PS1 - Max Resolution 640×480 - Real Resolution 320x240 (240p)
PS2 - Max Resolution 1080i/480p - Real Resolution 640x480 (480i)
PS3 - Max Resolution - 1920×1080 (1080p) - Real Resolution 1280 x 720 (720p)
PS4 - Max Resolution - 1920×1080 (1080p) - Real Resolution 1920×1080 (1080p)
PS4 Pro - Max Resolution - 3840 x 2160 (4k) - Real Resolution 1920 x 2160

PS5 is clearly a 4K machine.

And even most of those are not correct if "real" means actually most used.

How come?
I think there has been a couple which you can technically buy, but they are there just for show really.

Making an 8k panel is easy. Making an 8k panel that's better than the best 4k panels is hard.

Then you have the problem of content. Itd be relatively easy to rescan the old films in 8k as they've done in 4k and 1080 and 480 before. But new content requires new cameras and bigger server farms.

So you have expense - everywhere. For what.

Gaming isn't ready.

Can eyes even notice difference between 4k and 8k??

Hardly. Even seeing the difference between 4K and 1080 can be hard on smaller screens. I have also read that 8K TV's wont be feasible for consumers for quite some time.

I dont know if the PS5 will run at 8K, but simply adding more pixels wont make better graphics, especially at those numbers

Yeah blows my mind seeing people pay so much for extra pixels.

Good luck running 8k games, top end PC's which cost a bomb just about play 4k.

So I have one more year with my PS4. What a great console it’s been. Can’t wait for Skyrim on the PS5

A year we should cherish, as I'm sure it will continue to produce great games until the end. Obviously PC hardware has surpassed it ten fold by now, but games like Bloodborne, GOW, Uncharted 4, Horizon, TLOU, TW3 among countless others made it priceless still.

I think far and away the most impressive console that Sony have ever produced. The PS2 had a huge library but the PS4 has just been a complete workhorse. Mine is a launch console and still going hard.

It’s a really difficult call for me to say which is the most impressive console, especially when viewed through the lens of the times they were released.

I think to an extent the PS1 will cloud my judgement because that was the first console I ever owned, and it was my first exposure to a lot of things, like a proper FIFA game, plugging in countless hours into RPG’s like Legend of Legaia and Final Fantasy, or even experiencing 3D fighting games like Mortal Kombat 4 outside of the arcade. There were so many firsts for me attached to that console that I don’t think I could ever say that anything else would top it.

I'd say at best the PS5 will have a 8k player in it.
Theres no way it'll play games at 8k. The pro struggles to perform well at 4k as it is.

It's like the xbox one s. Thats 4k capable, but in reality, it's just a 4k blu ray player

Imagine thinking if this is gonna do 8k or have a 8k player.

I don’t know what people been smoking. The only game it probably be capable of doing in 8k is Peggle.

Also Sony didn’t even bother putting a 4K player in the pro and you think they going to somehow put a 8k player in the PS5. No chance considering blu ray sales are going down and more people are streaming than ever. It will be a 4K player. 8k player would be unnecessary cost to the console, when in reality you don’t even need it.

I think people should pray for 4K and 60fps, if it can do that then great.

The bare minimum should be 1080p @ 60 fps and 4k @ 30fps. If every single next gen game achieves at least that, I'll be delighted. But to be honest, I really wouldn't be surprised if we see some games still locked at 30 fps across all resolutions.

Does anyone know what date in February, Sony are due to unveil this?

I don't think this has actually been stated yet. There's rumours about February, but i don't think Sony has confirmed anything. Rumours are February the 12th for the reveal.

Thing is those games were developed with weaker consoles in mind, I don't believe PS5 will have a true 8K output but that will definitely be the case on PC next gen.

With increasingly comprehensive raytracing implementations in future games, 8k is going to be completely out of reach for literally every single gpu out there for years and years to come. Even 4k @ 60 fps will need loads more power than even an RTX 2080 Ti with max rt settings. Just look at Control.

Yeah true forgot about raytracing, tbh I don't really care for resolution.

This saddens me, as back in 2013 your worries (or insight) regarding PS4 and XBONE horsepower were spot on.

Please be wrong!!

If it makes you feel better, both new machines are going to be relatively more powerful for their time than the PS4/Boner. The cpus aren't the best again, but the gpus are much better than before.

Also it's worth noting the PS5 sdk should be even more focused since it will be pretty much identical to the PS4 to work with, so there'll be plenty of power from the off.

Sony going to announce today they are skipping E3 again apparently. Shame as E3 2013 was huge for the PS4.

Well that’s E3 sadly gone. Won’t be long before MS pull out.

PS4 reveal was the February before a November release, so hopefully we'll get a proper look soon(ish), plus retailers will want them to announce something as early as possible so they can get their pre-orders up and running.

The idea of E3 is fantastic as spectacle and as a showpiece for games and the industry, but you hear so many stories about the horrible crunches companies have to go through getting stuff ready for that event, I think I'd rather companies like Sony and their first party studios focus on getting stuff ready for launch, rather than getting a stage demo prepped that doesn't work to their timeline.
