Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

It’s your modern survival game: resource gathering, base building, exploration. It’s alternately very peaceful, routine, and/or terrifying.

I would say more but it’d be spoiling it I think.
Hmm. I do have RE2s second playthrough to wrap up so I'll park Subnautica for later.

Well this is just great. I was all set to pick up both Subnautica and Control both of terrific discounts under the 'Hidden Gem' section but couldn't close the deals due to some network issues. Next day both are back to full price and there's feck all worth buying on discount now.

Bugger.

Control is still £24 on the epic store, so strange it's back to full price here. Subnautica is worth the price though, Control I wouldn't recommend at that money.

Perhaps an odd request, but does anyone have any suggestions for night time driving games?

I'm sure most driving games feature a basic day/night option, but I guess I'm looking for any that do it particularly well and/or just generally embrace the theme.

Ideally not track based games and extreme rain would be a bonus too. Thanks!

Need for Speed Carbon or Need for Speed Underground 2 are both night time games.

Why is there a need for (console) in the thread title? What else could PlayStation 4 refer to?
There is logic behind it. The original idea was to put Console in all console titles, so if someone wanted to see the threads for all consoles at a glance, all they had to do was do a search for console in the title in this forum. That kinda stopped after I did this and possibly the Xbox One thread.

Subnautica I wanted to go for. It's still at a decent price. I just don't know if I can go into a horror/survival game head on given I'm on RE2 and before that finished Outer Wilds. I thought Control would compliment it but for some reason it's ok full release price on the store.

Also what do people make of Journey? It was hailed as an all time great when it launched and IGN gave it their GOTY. I finally got around to playing, and it's... good, but what's the fuss all about? It's essentially a small game with cute visuals, a cryptic story and great music. I'd pick tons of indie/non blockbuster games over it. Outer Wilds, Braid etc are on a different level altogether IMO.

Ah that makes sense!

Im playing Code Vein atm, a soulslike clone. It's actually pretty descent despite the mediocre reviews. It has very good user reviews on metacritic.

So these are my options

Subnautica
Far cry 5 and new dawn bundle
Doom 2016 and Wolfenstein new collssus

All three for roughly the same price. Pic one caftards.

That good huh? It does seems like my kind of game. Doom and Wolfenstein both have very high ratings so it's a solid combo but fairly traditional and typical games which is not my preference.
The Doom renaissance has been a welcome refresher for the FPS recently, to be fair.

I guess it’s a question of do you want Rambo or Alien...

I never thought Journey was anything special either. Nice enough while it lasted and perfect if you just want a short, relaxing experience, but that's about it. Just one of those short, little games I've played through once and never really thought about since, joining a list of games like Rime, Unravel, Brother: A Tale of Two Sons and What Remains of Edith Finch (another game whose near-universal praise I just don't get).

I agree. What Remains of Edith Finch is another grossly overrated one for me.

You have to take games like this and Firewatch as interactive stories as in that way they can be very good. But as games getting super high praise, nah not for me.

So... Subnautica it is?

Yes.

Btw I don't class it as a horror game, it's not really. It's tense at times and maybe a few jump scares here and there, but you can have chilled times in it too depending on what you want to do.

.
I've enjoyed a fair few of these games. I remember liking Dear Esther and Everybody's gone to rapture. What remains was fine but I couldn't understand the over the top praise. Same for Gone Home from some years back. I can enjoy a different experience for what it is. But if it's going to be an interactive story then it better be a brilliant story to be called a brilliant game/experience. Like To the Moon. Now, that had no gameplay (or visuals)at all, but the story was just fanatastic.

Doom multiplayer, is that a thing? How fluid and fast it all controls in the campaign is brilliant!
Feels kinda like how I remember quake.

Yeah that's one of the rare interactive stories that stayed with me. I still listen to the lovely piano soundtrack from time to time. SNES style graphics, no voices, a wonderful soundtrack and a well-written story with memorable characters, that formula worked in the 90's and it still works now.

Buy far cry 4 or far cry 3 hd for half the price instead of far cry 5... far better games.
I believe I've played both. FC3 was good but I don't think I liked FC4 from what I remember. I think the series seems to have gotten a bit stale , so I was mostly deciding between Subnautica and Doom plus Wolfenstein 2 combo.

As it turns out I've decided to bide my time awaiting better discounts by playing Return of the Obra Dinn instead which has been wonderful so far.

It's possible there may be some decent trade-in deals against the PS5 around the time it comes out so it may be worth waiting to see. Mind you, I thought the same for the Pro and there was nothing decent so who knows.
