Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

People already have their phones and know they're going to take them everywhere. Most people would prefer to spend a little money on a controller (this will likely be compatible with the £10 products out there not just DS4s) than buy a handheld gaming device. My step dad might have a PS4 but considering he only plays COD I'd call him a casual gamer. My boss at work got these controllers for her and her husband before they went to Austrailia to use on the plane and stuff.

It's another way to reach the casual audience and once the connection stumbling block is overcome it's going to be a brilliantly accessible way of making money on Playstation to those who aren't interested in owning a console.

It's not for everyone but I expect to see more people playing PS games through their phone whilst out and about than Vitas.

I can never really game extensively on my phone anyway. I'll just have a quick go at Angry Birds or Fruit Ninja for a few mins on the train or the bog, then just go back to my web browser. I certainly can't imagine myself lugging out a DS4 controller to play TLOU on a 5 inch screen

But what about FIFA? Or Top Spin? Or some of these great indie games that are gonna hit. There's no reason you couldn't play those on a 5 inch screen. It's not gonna be just for on the bus, but also in the house - on the shitter, in the garden, whilst the missus or kids are watching tv etc.

And think of the people who have no interest in owning the console but do enjoy the casual game. I know lots of people who spend hours using emulators on their phones.

Plus, you can't really compare playing those games to touchscreen ios/android ones.

Again, I'm only speaking for me but I don't imagine myself bothering to play full featured games on a smart phone - regardless of whether its FIFA or something like TLOU. I'd rather just retreat to my couch to play properly on the PS4, or have a quick game of angry birds while waiting for my train to come in.

I don't doubt it. Just saying I think that despite the limitations, I reckon it'll have huge reach and it's strange to see people knocking it so easily.

Streaming games to phones, tablets and Smart TVs is going to be huge.

The trouble is its at the mercy of a strong connection.

What ever happened to OnLive? I remember seeing it for the first time in Eurogamer 3 years ago and was even given a free console, still have it shelved somewhere. Not really sure if its taken off or not.

I always got the impression that most used their Vita as a home device though.

Until last year my commute to work was a local train to central london then a few buses. When I started Nintendo DSs were pretty common, but very few PSPs were around. However pretty quickly smartphones, then iPads, took over in an obvious way and you almost never saw handheld consoles on the commuter runs after that. Maybe a few children with Nintendos. I doubt I saw more than half a dozen Vita's in the last couple of years knocking around London. Bear in mind because Im interested I tend to spot em if they are around, but obviously I'm only one person so that's hardly conclusive.

Do you mean playing out of the house or on the same network?

I mean streaming from Sonys own servers. It'll take a while to 'get there' and overcome latency issues but I'm sure it'll happen.

It might depend on the country you are in, but I've got a notification on the VITA right now that says "142 people playing nearby." and I'm sat in an office.

It's a gimmick, who is going to lug around a DS4 with them? the type of person that would rather have a DS/Vita... plus it doesn't even look stylish. Needs some work definitely...

Right, thought you meant PS4 remote play.

I have to say I think we're a generation away for streaming like that. I mean the problem is just latency, simple as that, and its not easy to get around. The internet isn't changing any time soon and there's limits on what you can do client side without starting to install more of the software, which isn't really streaming any more. However good your connection is it takes time for the data to bounce there and back and the difference is off-putting to users.

I did read a research paper that Microsoft (not the xbox team) released recently about software to more or less guess what you're going to do in order to make it appear that you have zero latency. But its still at the theory stage afaik.

A bit dry, but interesting nonetheless. I think it'll take this kind of idea to make a breakthrough.

It's happening now.

They are hoping they can stretch these consoles out to reach streaming for the next gen, hence why all that crap MS were trying with the one before launch and both sony and MS trying to compete with the likes of EA and Ubisoft who want to do away with them and run their own systems next time out.

Thing is they've done this gen on a budget and both, especially the one, are already behind the curve. The graphics might be impressive to non PC gamers now, but they aren't hugely different from last gen enough to last years and years.

It's due to everyone downloading mine craft or some shit.

It's getting a bit ridiculous now isn't it, imagine what Destiny is going to be like on Tuesday.

Mines been saying I haven't paid my subscription since about 6. Only bought a years worth in May.

There's a few games having trouble with a Error NP-36147-1 problem. Its affecting Diablo and Final Fantasy apparently. Diablo boots up and I can play solo but it wont search for online games without the error.

The store is working and all that stuff, just Diablo that is pissing me off.

Aye apparently Minecraft could be the reason for the problems.

Mine is totally down

You would think that now we have to pay for it the service would be a little better

You can play these games on a Vita without carrying a Dual Shock around, with physical buttons and a good layout. You need WiFi but then again playing over LTE/3G would be hard anyway with connection difficulties etc.

Yeah.. I know you can, what's that got to do with anything?

I paid almost £400 for the privilege of knowing :(

Why would you buy this thing so you have to carry this and a DS with you when you can grab a Vita for £130 and soon probably for £99?
