Players who danced one summer

The whole Greek team in 2004, players like Dellas, Zagorakis or Charisteas caught interest from good clubs, but don't think anyone of them had a big career after that. Dellas was at Roma but couldn't get much games, Charisteas was on several Bundesliga benches, at least George Clooney made it to the top as an actor. Still don't know how they could win it.

Massimo Maccarone is a good one. Very highly rated when he joined Middlesborough and the figure was something like £8m. Completely failed like Alves.

Zlatko Zahovic - early version of Mesut Özil. Had an absolutely amazing WC 2002 before he started a fight in the dressingroom and was sent home if I remember it correctly.
Actually he was s..t at WC 02(brilliant at EC 2000) acted like a primadona then got into a fight with Katanec after he subbed him off (apparently he said to Katanec that he could buy him and his whole family & to f..k off etc the next day he was sent back to Slovenia )
He was a very good player during the 90s especially at Olympiacos where he scored some epic goals - was also a free kick specialist . Sadly his ego was his downfall

Alan Dzagoev: One of the young stars of Euro 2012 and was subsequently highly sought after due to his performances in said competition. He didn't move however and remained at CSKA Moscow for six seasons thus far. From all that hype, he has subsequently gone completely off the radar of top clubs and you rarely his name crop up anymore.

Shouldn't be on this list...

My contributions are Sibierski/Voronin/Rebrov/Jeffers

I'll throw Kezman in.
Not because he lit up a tournament, but he came to Chelsea with an excellent goal scoring record, and failed miserably

I see a lot of FM05 talent in here. D'Alessandro, Joaquin, Vicente etc.....which leads me to ask, why did they make Cavanaghi straight up the best striker ever(any FM imo) in that game? The best striker in FM history as far as I'm concerned, doesn't matter who you bought him for, 40 goal guarantee, in whatever system.

Does anyone remember Michael Bridges? Him and Robbie Keane were awesome together in Leeds. Keane went on to make a career for himself whereas injuries took their toll on poor Bridges.

Also, remember Albert Luque? Seemed like a real talent until he went to Newcastle.

It was the same in the FIFA games, too. It was strange, for me, as well, as he wasn't renowned by anyone except for maybe some Argentinians and Bordeaux fans.

It may be down to the fact that he was a prolific goalscorer during his time at River Plate. His time at Spartak Moscow was difficult, but at Bordeaux, he was a key goalscorer in their team with Chamakh supporting him well, particularly during their league-winning season. However, he did fade into obscurity and is now rarely getting appearances even during his second spell at River Plate.

What happened to Vittek, the player that scored 4 goals (scored against Italy) in the 2010 world cup? I was sure somebody would pick him up.

Has been solid, if not unspectacular in Oz. Retired back in April 2011, came back November that year.

I think Newy have let him go now and he's retired for good, working with Newcastle Jets' youth program

He's never been a great player, except for one season with Nürnberg when he scored tons of goals alongside fellow Slovakian Marek Mintal who certainly is a name for this thread. Top scorer in Bundesliga from midfield and all.

He went to Turkey and rarely got appearances, there. He's now playing for Slovan Bratislava and has 11 goals in 13 appearances for them.

James Beattie. Had one amazing season for the Saints. Has been utterly useless ever since. Moyes sounded quite a lot of money on him (I think he was Everton's record signing at the time) but he looked completely out if place. He ha a few good seasons for Sheffield unite but there was just one season when he looked like a Permier League striker.

Martin dahlin was part of the awesome Swedish side from USA 94, but never reproduced that form anywhere else after leaving borussia monchengladbach, from the same side Thomas brolin, part of the exciting Parma side that also contained faustino asprilla and Zola, was replaced by hristo stoichkov and sold to Leeds where he became something of a joke...........what was it with Howard wilkinson and having issues with talented players?

Yes it was probably the EC 2000 that I meant. Was trying to think back to what tournament it could have been and I also remember it being the EC but when I googled him I found it was the WC he was thrown out of, and I had a weak memory of him being a good player in that tournament where he was thrown out. Thanks for clearing that out.

He probably had a pretty decent career but that tournament he stepped up a bit more than his reputation as a player has given him credit for. Too bad he didn't get to play in a more interesting league.

A bit unfair on Brolin. He had an injury after his WC from which he never really recovered from. He also had a natural tendency to accumulate fat easily. He had no natural fitness and had to struggle a lot harder. The manager really hated him in Leeds, so from that perspective it was very little he could have done to become a success.

Dahlin had a decent career and was about as known and respected as of todays players in the calibre of Miroslav Klose. I think he also had some trouble with injuries at the end of his career.

Florent Sinama-Pongolle.

Had a brilliant u-17 WC by all accounts in 2001. Never quite lived up to the hype

I'll never forget the Liverpool fans on this forum back then saying they got the better deal when they signed Le Tallec and Pongolle for less than what Ronaldo cost

Markus Rosenberg
? Had a pretty good Euro u21s, finished as 4th top league scorer in the Bundesliga and then just looked remarkably average ever since. No goals in 33 appearances for West Brom.

Maceo+Rigters+Gold+Coast+United+Headshots+FYEj1tbkbOkl.jpg

Maceo Rigters was a very average player throughout his career but off the back of finishing top scorer in the Euro u21s (and scoring an overhead kick in the final?) he got a move to the Premier League. Made just two appearances for Blackburn despite being on their books for four years. In those four years he managed just 5 goals while out on loan at Willem II. Now apparently scoring goals for fun for Gold Coast United.

lucas-barrios.jpg

Probably a bit harsh but Lucas Barrios looked excellent in the Dortmund team that won their first title in just under a decade. Linked with plenty of big clubs and looked to be an essential part of their fluid, dynamic football. Also got to the final of the Copa America with Paraguay. Moved to China, realised it was a terrible idea but had presumably already damaged his reputation in Europe enough so that the only top European clubs that were interested in him came from Russia, and he managed just 1 goal in his first season for Spartak Moscow. Seemingly out of the picture for the national team too.

misimovic_schuss_345.jpg

Zvjezdan Misimović in his two seasons at Wolfsburg got more assists than Özil and I think is the only player in the Bundesliga record books that has gotten 20 assists in a single season. Him, Dzeko and Grafite were the trio that drove Wolfsburg to their only title in Bundesliga history and he was making a name for himself as a set-piece expert and incredibly productive creator. Went to Galatasaray and within three months he was moved into their reserve squad and he's now playing in China.

George Burley was actually excellent at Hearts and they were top of the league - ahead of both Rangers and Celtic - when he left the club.

Absolutely gash everywhere else he has been mind.

I remember him doing pretty well with a very mediocre Derby side just before Hearts as well, took them from 20th to 6th and got them playing some good football. Him and Billy Davies (Preston) came up against each other in the play-offs and were being hyped up as two of the best, most progressive British managers around.

Scored a great goal against us back in 08/09 too. I think that was the game where Valencia hit the post with a cracking 25-yard strike in what must have been his only decent shot from outside the box in his United career.

Not sure it's fair to put Dzagoev up there simply because he's decided to stay in his home country until now - he's still just 23. There's every chance it's a personal decision for him to stay there rather than a reflection on his career progression/quality.

Fair points

GCU were dissolved in 2012 because their owner, while immensely rich, was a complete prat.

Oh, and Rigters was shite. Arrived unfit, even for A-League level at the time.

Apologies for replying to a post which is over a month old, but how is Poborsky wearing our Champions' League kit from 98/99-99/00?

We only had that kit for 2 seasons, right? And he left at the end of 97/98?

Marcus Berg. Scored plenty of goals in the U21 Euros and for Groningen only to make the same mistake as many Swedish players do and move to the Bundesliga, which is like, cursed or something. Top scorer in the Greek league or something now apparently.

We had it for 1997/98 too. The picture is either from 3-0 v Kosice (A), 3-1 v Feyenoord (A), 3-0 v Kosice (H) or 0-1 v Juventus (A).
