Secured a move to, at the time, a strong Villarreal side, scored a lot of goals at the Copa America and Confederations Cup in 2004-2005 only to pretty much disappear from the world stage instantly, maybe for the best seeing as him and Esteban Cambiasso in the same team made Argentina a bit of an eyesore to watch due to the terrible, terrible hair on display. Currently plying his trade in the Malaysian League.

Nery Castillo

Star player at the Copa America only to fail at Shaktar Donetsk and Manchester City. Biting the grass at Rayo Vallencano at the moment, apparently.

Amr Zaki

Scored a cool goal at Anfield or something and was hailed as a Steve Bruce genius signing and out of all clubs in the world he has now ended up in Raja Casablanca.

What about that Russian guy that set Euro 2012 alight? What's he up to now?

Dzagoev?

Dani Guiza

Scored 27 league goals for Getafe and made it into their 2008 Euros squad. Hasn't done much since. Wiki says he's at Cerro Porteno.

Who the guy who scored a couple of wonder goals in Germany a few years back. Gatafe or something like that?

Oh, and Papiss Cisse

Roque Santa Cruz
Roque-Santa-Cruz.jpg

Bought for a steal price by Mark Hughes at Blackburn, had one superb season in the PL and then joined Hughes at City.

Wiki says he's at Malaga but I don't believe a word. I reckon he's still at City somewhere in a basement having been forgotten about by everyone, still getting paid £90k a week, 6 years on despite barely having played a match for them. The Winston Bogarde of strikers.

Karel Poborsky
Jordi Cruyff
Kleberson

Thank god Fergie learned the lesson of not signing anyone on the basis of having one good tournament to their name.

Milan Baros

Turned up one summer at Euro 2004 where he scored an inordinate of goals that defied his actual ability. His career was then interspersed with an inexplicable moment in modern football history whereby he actually won a Champions League winners medal as the starting striker in a final. Last seen at Galatasaray being flagged offside. Presumed dead.

His injury and mental problems were a tragedy, truly think he had it in him to be a world class midfielder.

Yeah it's a shame, didn't like seeing him chastised in the media last year when that picture got out. Not sure about world class but he certainly could have been very good. Is he the last City youth product of any note? (Asides from Richards)

Freddy Adu

At 14 years of age, Freddy Adu was being hailed as the man to lead MLS into becoming one of the world's major leagues having starred for the United States under-17s as a 13-year-old. Benfica paid 2 million dollars for him and he was everyone's first signing in Championship Manager 2003. Now he plays somwhere in Brazil.

Anthony Le Tallec

Anthony Le Tallec was signed by Liverpool from Le Havre in 2001 after hugely impressive performances in the UEFA European Under 16 Championships and the FIFA Under 17 World Cup. Never made an impact at Anfield and now he's somewhere in the Ligue 1, i think.

Neil Mellor, scored 2 goals, one of which a screamer, the other which helped Liverpool on their way to winning the Champions League. Most recently seen struggling to utter words on Soccer Saturday.

Kevin Phillips danced a few summers.

Kenwyne Jones/Rodallega could go that route but it's way too early to say.

Kevin Phillips is one of the better strikers of the Premiership era. Highly underrated by many but always found the back of the net. Bit like Kevin Hector who used to play for Derby.

Marcus Stewart

Turned up one season with newly promoted Ipswich Town and then somewhat inexplicably finished the season as the league's second top scorer with 19 goals, and well over 20 in all comps. Ipswich equally inexplicably finished fifth, leading Caf poster Melbourne Red to regard their manager George Burley as some sort of managerial messiah, and look on in bafflement as he failed in what seemed like every successive job, including a sub-par stint at Hearts, and then another stint as a commentator on Sky, which was even subber-par.

But anyway, this is about Marcus Stewart. And Marcus Stewart turned out to be one of countless Premier League striking flashes-in-the-pan, doing very little in front of goal as Ipswich slid down the table to an eventual relegation two seasons later. Stewart also played for Sunderland for a bit, proved to be a bit crap there, and then spent the rest of his days bouncing around the football league.

He now coaches the youth teams at Bristol Rovers.

EDIT: Just realised this is about people who had one good tournament. Erm, yes. Carry on.

Yeah, pretty much. Most of the players we've produced in recent years haven't lived up to potential for whatever reason - Johnson, Ireland, Richards, Wright-Phillips (failed to progress after his move to Chelsea but was excellent for us), Onuoha.

Out of our current lot Huws on loan at Birmingham, Rekik at PSV and Marcos Lopes all seem most likely to break into the first team in the near future but not got much hope given our track record.

Scored for Malaga recently as the footy news suggested yesterday.

I used to read Bluemoon a lot in those years when the Johnson, Sturridge, Ireland, Richards, Onuoha types were coming through. There was all sorts of chat about how good they'd turn out to be. I've been a bit surprised at what's happened to Ireland and Wright-Phillips anyway. Both players with bags of ability. Ireland, in particular, has amounted to feck all since.

As for Johnson, I remember Didi Hamann comparing him favourably to a young Steven Gerrard when his opinion on Johnson was sought in an article a couple of years ago.

Has Summerbee ever retracted that comment about Richards being the new Duncan Edwards? Just like he was as good as Best.

Wright-Phillips was a pretty decent player for City. Scored a cracker against us a few years ago too. City used to have a lot of good young úns on the books but that talent pool seems to have dried up a bit of late. Same with us I suppose bar the odd one like Januzaj and Welbeck.

Salvatore "Toto," Schillaci
Salvatore-Schillaci-Argentina-Italy-World-Cup_2383380.jpg

Showed up for Italia 90 with a limited scoring record for Mesina and Inter. Never looked like a class act but gave great example of a poacher raising his game for one summer. Joined Juve but failed to relive his world cup form and ended up at Japanese club Jubilo Iwata.
