Players lying down behind the wall during a free-kick

Are you ok mate?

Yeah, there are quite a few goals you can see which arent headed into the top corner, but you see a free man with his hands on his hips marking nobody who would / could have cleared the ball easily.
Perfect example here as to why a player covering the post is needed

Why is this becoming so much more common?

I swear there's been about 3 free-kicks that have been scored under the wall in the history of football, yet it seems like this defensive move happens during almost every FK in the Prem right now.

Make that 4 ;)

When the 'keeper was lining up the wall you could honestly see they weren't that focused. I was even saying to my dad how it looked strange. Then all three of them turn their back Nasri-style. I'd be furious with them.

Yeah probably perfect example where this was warranted tonight. Olvieira's long run up looked on for a low drilled shot and not over the wall.

The keeper should have saved it, he even got his hands on it.

Guess this makes it 4

Sir Chesney was wayyyy too far over. If his positioning is correct he saves it, regardless of Ronaldo’s Frank Spencer impression.

Maybe he should've gotten down quicker, but the main culprit is that wall. You have to defend better there.

Carragher and some other guy were talking about this. The other guy blamed the keeper, said he should have made the save and his positioning is wrong. Carragher said the wall is at fault.

That goal was mainly on Szczesny with a weak hand and slow reflexes. Wall didn't help either but that shot didn't have much pace on it and was really far out for a skimmer.

I think it’s poor from all involved really. Keeper should do better but the wall totally let him down as well. They all split up, turned their backs, legs apart. These are supposed to be the seasoned veterans of this competition and they’ve gone out because of a schoolboy error.

Both said the wall was abysmal. But there were plenty of errors to share in that goal.

I mean I posted this in another thread but just look at this wall, you need to provide better cover than that at any time and especially this late in a Champions League game.

Completely chickened out all of them and especially Ronaldo.

I reckon the long run up intimidated the wall. He made out like he was going to absolutely cnut it at them, and they all shit themselves.

Those Juve players in the wall were a disgrace and the keeper even after that should still keep it out. It really must suck to go put of a high level tournament by conceding such a shitty goal.

Is there an image or vid from behind the keeper? All that space you'd think the keeper should have instantly seen the direction of the kick and made a move towards.

That was horrible. Ronaldo turning his back and lifting a leg. He basically made himself as small as possible. Usually a guy will lie behind the wall because it's a free kick from the edge of the 18 and it's really hard to get the ball to dip after you put it over the wall. So guys try and go under. I don't think I've ever seen someone go under the wall from that far away. That's a perfect distance to go over the wall and still have plenty of room to get it to dip back down. Strange one indeed. The commentator asked why there's wasn't someone lying behind the wall, but really, the wall just has to hold it's ground. I love CR7 but after seeing that, I don't think he will be asked to be in a wall again...

Feel like it's harsh to blame Szczesny there to be honest - he was unsighted by the wall and also by McKennie to some extent (probably explains why he was yelling at the latter to move away). If a ball is hit low, it's far harder for the keeper to pick up on the trajectory as opposed to when it's lifted over the wall, so his time to react was far less. For me that's almost entirely on the wall.

The OP is completely missing the point. Its like asking why are there air bags in the car, they get used maybe once in a lifetime for a person. The point is having a player lying down allows others to jump freely to try and block, whereas otherwise its always a risk and they do not jump that much. So as far as I am concerned its a valid strategy which some teams choose to adopt.

I'm not missing the point mate, I get why people do it. I was just wondering whether that player is not better suited to marking an attacker or stopping a passing lane to the wings considering the infrequency of goals being scored under the wall.

And that's what I am saying.. infrequent goals scored is not the right criteria. Is it the case that the wall is able to jump more proactively?
