Philipp Lahm wanted by Manchester United... But deal hindered by Bayern Munich's interest in Ji-sung Park | Mail Online

Manchester United have rekindled their interest in Bayern Munich right-back Philip Lahm, 26, but a deal could be complicated for the Germany captain.

Bayern, who have made an approach for Ajax right-back Gregory van der Wiel, also have an interest in United's Ji-Sung Park and may ask for cash plus the player.

United are weighing up other targets and have also been offered Porto's midfielder Raul Meireles - a target for Chelsea.

Lahm is quality but with Rafael maturing I can't see the upside to this for us, now if they want to talk a deal for Muller. :p

Lahm is an outstanding full back but, we are more in need of a player like Bastian Schweinsteiger....as its Bayern.

Would definitely be nice but not exactly the player we need at the moment. We need a creative outlet from the midfield and we already have an attacking right back in Rafael who deserves a good run this season.

IF Neville is retiring, then having Rafael wouldn't be enough would it?

What happens if Neville retires, the club pencils in Rafael at right back, and then Rafael picks up an injury?

You must have depth, especially when you play as many matches in as many competitions as United does.

O'Shea and Brown do not give enough going forward for a club like United to be successful (win trophies) as most opponents are content to pack it in defensively and play for a draw over the course of a season.

Furthermore, as much as I love Rafael, his performance against Bayern Munich last season highlights his yet unproven nature.

Brown was instrumental to our double in 07/08 and O'Shea was pretty much the first choice right back in 08/09 when we won the league.

Nonsense.

Im not saying that we need Lahm on the other hand its time to starting considering any games given to us by Rio/Wes/Gaz as a bonus.

as has been pointed out, brown was RB in our double season, also are you talking about rafael's game where he dominated Ribery for the whole time he was on the pitch then got a second yellow for being fouled by Ribery?

I can't see past Rafael to replace Neville and Lahm will only hinder his progress.

Fcuk Lahm, I'd rather keep Park, and start picking Rafael as first choice full back.

Where did Park come in a Right Back discussion

EDIT: Oops just read the Article.

Yeah keep Park. We don't need no Lahm!

I hope we don't sign him to be honest. there is only one Bayern player I would want us to go for and that would be Schweinsteiger.

Lahm is right footed but has generally played left back, where we have Evra, who I prefer. unless Evra is being sold, and I hope he is not, we don't need Lahm for there.

We could play him at right back, but I want us to put our faith in Raf as our future first choice RB, and I would like to see him really given the chance this year. With experienced players like O'Shea and Brown backing him up I really don't think we need a RB either. Also, we still have Neville there too. He isn't as good as he once was, obviously, but I honestly feel when he got the run of games at the end of last season he put in some very good performances and while I would not name him as our first choice right back, I don't think he is the worst player we could call on when needed.

If we do making a signing before the season starts, I would prefer it to be a central midfielder, I think we are ok enough in other areas, but potentially very weak in the centre of the part, which is the most important part of the pitch imo. The last place I would be looking to buy a player for would be right back.

Even 5 won't be enough for devillish. What if the stars fall down on O'Shea and Rafel etc.

:wenger: fecks sake

I wouldn't see an upside not because rafael is maturing but that we have Brown and O'shea. Rafael is still at least 2-3 years away from realizing his actual potential.

edit: But it would be a quality signing, no doubt about that. And something that actually provides more than we already have.

I've got an idea of how to fit him in - play him as the main right back for the first two years(with him switching to left back when Evra needs a rest) and then, given that Evra's 29 and pace is a big part of his game, he might be moved over to left back to replace Evra.

I was going to suggest the same thing but can't help to think do we really need him? I know we will be much much better with him but just can't see SAF doing this unless he is either getting rid of Evra or one of the other 1st team fullbacks..

Don't think we need him at all but then I thought the same thing about Evra when we had Heinze so that's the only reason I gave it any thought.

Thought this was a very interesting point by a Bayern fan in the newbies:

But as you ask: I rate Lahm among the Top 5 left and right backs in the world. Something people do not often see - he lets other people shine:

Has been playing left back before last season and made Ribery a world star. This year he was playing right back and Robben performed extremly well. In the world cup he played behind Müller and guess what - Müller has a marvelous WC. Last WC he played left back with Podolski in fron and ....

This is his special strength. I am convinced he would play in any club worldwide.

now when you said that....maybe there is something in the Evra moving to Spain gossip

Lahm is World Class and would improve our team immaculately.. I think that poster has a decent point myself.. But with the financial situation as it is its very difficult to see us signing a player in a position we have very well covered as compared to other positions that clearly need attention..

Park has been fantastic for us but if we have a chance to get Lahm in a cash plus player deal we should do it.

Interesting theory Brwned, also interesting post from the newbies, Lahm behind Valencia may help Valencia expand his game.

Agree with this point. Either way I can't see Bayern selling someone who is probably going to be their captain in a couple of years. It would be like us selling Rooney or Fletcher to a foreign team, just can't see it happening.

I would think it would have more to do with Lahm wanting to move rather than Bayern wanting to sell if it were the case..
