United seal Jones deal

Phil Jones is set to become United's first signing of summer 2011 after the Reds successfully negotiated a transfer with his current club Blackburn Rovers.

A club statement published on Monday reads as follows:

"Manchester United is delighted to announce it has signed an agreement with Blackburn Rovers for the transfer of Phil Jones.

"The player passed a medical in Manchester last week and has agreed a 5-year contract. The deal will be completed once the player returns from international duty."

Jones, 19, came through the youth ranks at Blackburn before turning professional on 1 July 2009. He made his senior debut two months later, in a Carling Cup victory at Nottingham Forest, and went on to make a total of 40 appearances for Rovers.

The robust central defender, who can also play in midfield, has been capped seven times so far by England at Under-21 level. The latest appearance was in Denmark on Sunday, when he started alongside new club colleagues Tom Cleverley, Chris Smalling and Danny Welbeck in the 1-1 draw with Spain in the UEFA Under-21 Championships.

As is the norm with #mufc transfers, the fee is "undisclosed". Blackburn, however, have reported it as a "potential club record deal".

Blackburns current record is £18mil for Santa Cruz, so could be £20mil+ we've paid for him :rolleyes:

The keywords are potential record deal. Looks like it's that 16.5M plus the Clauses deal.

You could have bid 102 million you silly fecktards it made no difference, the player told you where to swivel and the release clause as confirmed by his agent was set in stone at 16 million, comprende?

Why would we even need to pay add ons when he clearly doesnt want to go to anyone else.

Venkys know that and they are trying to be slimy. We shouldn't just pay up - I'm sick of clubs trying to gouge us every time for feck sake £16m is a lot for a 19 year old with 34 EPL appearances. These fecking Venkys don't know when they have been given an execllent offer - fecking slimebags wanting more from us.

So Liverpool's bid did drive the price up for us. Did we really just cave in under pressure from Blackburn?

Anyway, here's hoping that he's a success at United and if he's here for more than a decade as first choice, it'll be money well spent.
