Why would a top flight club in a foreign country in a relegation battle take a risk on a player who has been out injured for about 2 years, doesn't speak the language and has no incentive in assisting them to avoid relegation? Especially in a 4 month loan, when they have their own players to develop. There's two reasons: they even want a cheap back up option, or they desperately want to take the risk and would happily offer him the choice to be 1st choice.

It appears they wanted him as a cheap backup option. That's not what he needs, and it is obvious he would want guarantees in his situation. He doesn't need to swap somewhere he will get 0 games for somewhere he will get 3 or 4 games, it won't prove anything, he needs somewhere he can get 15 or so games. It could be Barnsley, Torquay, Dunfermline, Malmo, wherever, he should just go somewhere they would happily take a punt on him and guarantee him to be 1st choice.

I really fecking hate the black and white way people insist on seeing the world, as if the Bordeaux move falling through means Jones doesn't want to move, or that there's no other potential moves that Jones is holding out for.
Agreed entirely. Not gonna move and potentially be away from my family when I've been in 1 place for a decade for no guarantees.

Defended him a lot but this is an odd decision. He’s surely going to get far more game time there than with us.

I kinda get it though, why uproot yourself (and family?) for 6 months if you're not going to definitely play? Especially with physical condition he's in... Be better off staying at home and not playing.

He probably didn’t want to uproot his family, or at least be away from his family, for half a year if he wasn’t going to play. Can’t blame him.

True. Thought it might’ve been a good way to potentially kick start his career again.

I'm sorry how this 'guarantee' was supposed to look like?

Having carefully studied all your performances of last two years, we, Bordeaux, make a solemn promise that regardless of how you play or how fit you are, you are going to start min. 90% of games and you will never be subbed off until 75 min. mark. The club reserves the right to sub you off, however, no more than 3 times, in between 76th minute and EOM.

Yeah, it's ridiculous and comes off as a weak excuse. Of course, he needs to play well enough to get game time. You expect Bordeaux to keep playing somebody (especially a player on loan) who doesn't play well when they're fighting relegation? This to me means either 1) he doesn't trust himself to play better than the other Bordeaux players (sitting 17th in the French league) or 2) He never had any intention of leaving and is content collecting his paycheck.

Disappointed in Jones. I guess he would rather sit in the bench/stands and collect his paycheck rather than making that push to get fit and prove himself.

Brainless from Jones tbh. Just comes across as he’d rather stay on the bench not playing and earning his wage.

What a waste of internet to post such garbage.

If he has no guarantee of getting games in the French League, why would he go all the way to France to sit on the bench? He might as well do it here.

Phil Jones is one of the most genuine hard working players in the squad. Jog on with your stupid comments
You do realise the guy has been our player for almost 10 years and he won't be playing here regularly so the best way to get things back going is to test yourself. Any professional would do that. Also, its not like there are 3 or 4 teams chasing him. If that was the case then yes make sense. There is a reason Bordeaux wanted him, maybe they needed a defender. It was a great opportunity for him to rejuvenate his career. Prove yourself elsewhere for 6 months and then decide your future.

They’ve told him there’s no guarantee of game time. Why should he uproot his family for that when he can play cup games here?

No one is going to guarantee him game time nor should they. He either wants to be a first team footballer or he doesn't.

Certainly not got the attitude for a big club if he's not even confident he can prove himself good enough for them.

No one can guarantee anything in football. He has to fight for it. His career is going nowhere by just sitting here and making random appearances. But the fact Bordeaux asked for him, maybe they needed a defender. He is not going to start ahead of Maguire, Varane, Lindelof here or even Bailly. Why not just prove yourself elsewhere and get your career going.

He’s barely played a game with us for two years. If a new club is sounding out a player after not kicking a ball for two years, it’s probably not to just put the cones out.

Then they don't get him.

You act like Bordeaux are doing him a charity.

To be fair which team can promise any player game time? Let alone a guy who's only played one game in over 2 years.

Could Phil guarantee he will stay fit and be ready for selection for the 4 months he would have been there with them paying his wages?

Asking for game time is like asking for the best project a year down the line when you're getting hired. It's unrealistic and frankly dumb.

As I said though, I rate him higher than Maguire and they're the same age basically.

It's 6 months in a nice city in France a short flight away, not 6 years in China or South America. He doesn't even have to uproot his family.

The club was willing to subsidize 75% (who does that?) of his salary and waive the loan fee so that he has a chance at reviving his career. See how the club is handling Lingard in comparison.

If he ends up staying after turning this down, then it says a lot about his mentality and whether he actually wants to get back to playing.

Me too. Deserved better from us.

I don't agree at all. The club didn't release him and even gave him a new contract when he was injured long term. Even if it is just the club 'protecting its assets', Jones did benefit from that.

I'd say he's been treated well.

They are 17th in Ligue 1. I fully understand why he wouldn’t want to uproot for 6 months to jump into a relegation battle in a foreign league.

We extend contracts then suddenly expect players to work in the detriment to get us out of them, I fully understand why he’s staying over that move. Now if we want to look at someone robbing a living, it’s been quiet on the Mata front all winter window!

I'm baffled as to a why a player that has played one game in two years thinks he's going to be guaranteed play time at any good club

Too many of our players are deluded. They think they're better than they actually are.

He's sat on the treatment table and taken millions from this club doing nothing for years. Anybody saying he's been treated badly is absolutely insane.

Mata is definitely another one that has stolen a wage for years. I posted it in his thread a couple months ago. People seem to be okay with it for some reason? The club/Ole giving him a new contract was completely baffling.

He's got a much better chance of getting in the team at 17th placed Bordeaux than here competing against Maguire, Varane, Lindelof and Bailly, but he couldn't be arsed to even try. He's too comfortable here, picking up his wages to sit on the bench in familiar surroundings. What's the point in him staying here for the rest of the season knowing he's not going to play?

It's a 6 months loan, effectively he'll only be there for like 4 months, and it's very unlikely he'd stay after that. I dont know about his family situation but if he has kids I doubt he'll move them with his wife just for a 4months spell. He'd probably stay at the hotel by himself and go back to Manchester whenever he can.
And it's Bordeaux, they are 17th in Ligue 1, have the worst defence by far (10 more goals conceded than last place St Etienne) and they are in the process of selling their 2 starting centre backs, Mexer and Koscielny, as well as Otavio who can play there if needed, and they only recruited Marcelo so basically they have him and Gregersen as centre backs, and they often play 3 at the back. If healthy there's no chance he wouldn't start, it doesn't make sense to ask for game time guarantee in that situation in my opinion.

So you're basically saying someone's badly advising Jones?

There must have been something in the initial conversations that changed in the later ones for him to back out.

Oh no I'm not speculating or trying to understand why he refused. I dont know much about Jones or his personality, so I can't tell, I'm just referencing those reports that he turned down the offer because of the lack of guarantee. But if it's really game time he's worried about, he should know he'd walk into that team and instantly be their best defender and likely their best player. Also Bordeaux is one of the best cities to live in and the Girondins are one of the french historical great clubs. I thought it was a great opportunity for him to revive his career, with little risk involved.

At least he might learn French even if he is sitting on the bench. He should have looked at it in a positive aspect.

He must not have liked what he heard though. I doubt it'd actually be in his contract that he would be guaranteed an average of x minutes per match or something like that; I am assuming it's rather the case that he has conversations with the manager and gets told what to expect. So maybe that manager was being reluctant about promising anything, and then Jones wondered why move at all if Bordeaux are not actually seeing him as an upgrade that they'll be playing a lot. That wouldn't really improve his situation.

All hypothesized by me of course, but it's at least as possible as him just a lazy fecker and whatever else I'm seeing being written here.

He wants to play, if it's not guaranteed no need to go.
No player in the world can get guarantee of playing time. In United he is 5th option so he will not play (more or less) surely for us.
In France he would get far better chance for playing time.
If he wants to play football, he needs to take a risk. Obviously he is happy where he is. Zero ambition.
As i many times said, i have huge respect for Smalling. He was 4th choice (so, many possible chances for playing time) but he still went to Italy. Jones......better not to comment anymore. His choice of course but it is hard to defend him now by any means

Maybe he thinks Maguire is shite and he would have his chances this season?

If it was a permanent deal he would have been stupid to turn it down. He is never going to play for Utd again, unless we have 3-4 CD injuries all at the same time.
The fact its only 5 months and if he is only going to be sitting on their bench as cover, whats the point? You dont know whats been said to him.
I want Utd to move him on asap, but can see it from his point of view in this case.

Why is he still here? He's on the bracket of Sanchez, Rojo, and Bailly who United should get rid off.
