How do salaries work when players are injured? Do they get a predetermined percentage or is it the full deal no matter what?

I believe it is full deal. They get injured playing so I don't think they can reduce the salary duing recovery period. No player will accept that.

But I would like to know if there is some insurance we do for long term injury like Jones to recover some lost salary?

He's not the worst option when fit but the last time he had any sustained run was 3-4 years ago.

Well probably end up releasing him at the end of his contract. He can't stay fit.

Enough time left in the window to prove his fitness so someone can take a loan punt?

Has to be his best option at this stage, as 5th choice CB he will get very limited chances.

Sure he´s dreaming of getting back on the pitch for United, and I see no reason to bash him for it, it being realistic or not. Giving away his shirt would be giving up that dream. I can understand him, in a way.
This is wholly illogical. Get a new number, stay fit and produce on the pitch. If he believes that giving away his number is giving up his dream he is dumber than he looks and has the wrong mentality to be an elite player.

This is his year. He’s finally gonna stay fit, put it all together, win us the champions league, the league, carling and FA cup and get the Balon Dor. He’ll show Maguire and Varane Phil Jones Jutsu.

7th form - doving grass header technique to goal kick.

Honestly he could do with trimming down and losing some weight.

The last few times he played for us he looked pretty heavy, that's not going to help when it comes to staying fit.

Quick Google tells you he's on somewhere around £70-75k a week.

To be fair why would Google know anymore than a journalist about how much a particular man utd player earns every week. Both are likely guesses.

If he stays fit this season it might have something to do with him being on the bench all season. Sad what has happened to his career but at the same time United have looked after him throughout it all, even extending his contract.
Personally Id let him leave on a free and get his wage off the clubs bill, would possibly put a physio out of a job if he left.

He's here now, and our 5th choice Centre Back with Bailly as 4th (injury prone). Let's all hope he stays fit and can be useful if called upon.

There is no one there in the academy, the next best thing might be Willy Kambwala who is 17 in a week but hasnt played in over a year.

Hopefully Jones can be sold next season, we all now it was a horrible decision by the club to extend his contract and "preserve his value" apart from those that wouldnt dare to question any decision the club/Ole makes.

Ole said he was dekighted to see Jones extend back in 2019, but when you are realistic, that doesnt necessarily mean he was involved and actually was.

Assuming the #4 thing are just rumours, and he does really think he can still have a career here, he deserves the full support of the fans for this season.

I suspect if we have an injury crisis at centre back Shaw, McTominay & Matic would be called upon before Jones at this point.

The bashing of Phil Jones have reached ridiculous level.
Granted he can't play, but thos who shits on him seems to think that it was his fault that he got injured. It was his fault that United gave him the contract extension.
If he's not pulling his weight in training or he's done anything that would make the club questioned his professionalism, then he'll be out of the club contract or not

Honestly, I don't get statements like this. Phil Jones should have been sold 4/5 seasons ago and the fact he's still here on the wages he's on is honestly bewildering. I know some people use Fellaini as an example of how this club fell apart, but Phil Jones is a significantly better example of how inept the club has been run by Woodward. I don't have anything against Jones, but why is it close to 2022 and he's still a United player? I mean seriously, it's baffling.

You don't get statements like, 'he deserves the full support of the fans'? You think he deserves criticism? That's strange.

I don't think he deserves full support. He's done nothing in years, earns a horrendous wage for doing absolutely nothing. United is not a fecking charity.

Guess who's back
Hope he’s fit and ready to go because I don’t think Bailly will hang around once he realises he’s 4th choice

This is such a ludicrous statement that I honestly think you must be on a wind up. Take your frustrations out on the club, not the player. All players at the club deserve our full support.

Let's live in a mental world where he stays fit for the year and trains well.

I think he's likely to be Maguires stand in, as in, he's the defender who engages. Varane, Lindelof and Baily are all better at marking space and mopping up.

Jones should be talking to experienced coaches and players on how to stay fitter for longer. Many of his injuries seem to be minor niggles which take longer to heal for some reason for him. Perhaps taking up yoga might help, as well as being coached not to dive into a thunderous slide tackle when it isn't needed may help.

He is here for a few seasons yet, so would like to see him come good as at least a squad rotation option.

Strange attitude to a player with an injury

He's not been injured for 4/5 years on the trot GB. He's had plenty of chances to ask to leave United to attempt to get first team football elsewhere. There's been numerous examples of our players leaving United and finding issues with their bodies with a different medical team. He's done nothing at United in years, giving him a new contract was just phenomenally stupid.

Call me harsh, call me a cnut, but personally, players should earn respect and support. As for his current injury, I don't think we had any update on that in months? It was a mystery.

I mainly agree with you, but support Jones and direct that to the club (board, potentially Ole).

Jones hasnt really done anything wrong. I would find it very annoying and ridiculous if he did decline to give the number to Varane but even that, he's entitled to say no.

This is about as silly as expecting players to just give up the remainder of their contracts for the greater good, eg Micah Richards at Villa.

He just needs to stay fit enough to be an emergency 5th option, play a few cup games to prove his fitness and we might be able to move him on next summer.

You'll never get full support though. In an ideal world everyone in the stands would hold hands and throw roses at our players every minute. But we all get pissed off at our players being dumb or doing dumb shit. Some have irrational hatred towards Pogba, some can't stand Lingard etc etc.

Phil Jones is just another name on that list who has repeatidly done dumb shit, but has somehow avoided the axe every single time. It's a shame his career went this way and it's also a double shame that bordering on 30 he doesn't have the appetite for regular first team football, because it's clear as day he'll never get that at United now. Hasn't had that since 14/15. Hope for his sake he stays clear of injuries and leaves next summer so he can actually attempt to play professional football before he retires.

Well it wouldn't be in a journalists interest to sensationally overstate what he's earning at all would it?

Any of the sites listing footballers earnings have him on £70-75k a week, the only place I've seen anyone claiming he's on £130k a week is the tweet from that journalist.

He was immense that night. People forget how highly rated he was.

He was always talented, better CB than Smalling. Injuries ruined him. If he had 2-3 seasons as a starter fit, he would have kicked on to the next level and be one of the best CBs in the league. But his body/playstyle never allowed him that. You cannot improve if you cant stay fit for 2 months.

Why do we need to support Jones? He doesn’t belong here on merit, he is a very average player even if fully fit (which in itself is unimaginable) and continues to receive his high wages for nothing for many a year already.

Supporting Jones (or Andreas for that matter), we support mediocrity - and that’s not a trajectory a club of Man Utd calibre and legacy shall follow.

If a player is clearly not good enough (for whatever reason), the right decision is to part ways with him, not to support such player despite clear facts.

One day you´ll injure yourself at work in a way that makes your unable to work for a while. Then I hope you´re man enough not to expect any support. I mean, your work place is not a fecking charity, is it.
