Rojo is a better player, so unless he is sold in January... and even if he is sold in January, it would be better to keep Jones out of the squad. He may then become more willing to move elsewhere

He was not a better player when they both played for us back 2 years from now pretty much. Jones have higher ceiling for sure.
Although who knows how much they have lost from being in the treatmentroom so much.

Actually I'd say Rojo was better during that run of games (if by two years ago you mean 16/17 when they had that run together). He's probably a bit more solid than Jones and Bailly as he seemed to have less shockers and bad mistakes than those two do. Obviously only talking about when he played in the centre; he's normally been shit when played at leftback.

However he basically hasn't played in the three years since then so who knows what he's like now. Jones has had a couple of runs of games in that time and has done his usual combination of being decent overall but with enough bad moments thrown in that it's difficult to rely on him (even if it weren't for the injuries).

Some stories kicking around today about a possible loan move. I've seen Burnley mentioned as a possibility. Could be good for him if he somehow manages to stay fit.

Why does this hypothetical still get brought up?

Has he played up to 20 games since signing that contact?

Did a quick look and calculations.

Fantastic!

EDIT:  sorry my bad, this is the stats for Rojo. With the many discussions on Rojo in above posts, thought this is a Rojo performance thread.

I can't imagine that there is a post dedicated to Phil Jones. £70,000 per week for next three years for player who rarely appears on the bench (I'm not even talking about playing game). What kind of idiot would give Jones contract extension? Oh, forgot - Ed....

He has a quite incredible ability to suddenly be out for 2months without ever getting near the pitch in an actual competitive game.
Such a shame such a promising career is petering out when he should be at his utter prime.

Can we not do a hargreaves and terminate his contract? Or pay as you play basis, surely there is some loophole to prevent us being shafted like this

Even a worse contract decision than Rojo. Not his fault but this is disgraceful.

It started with leg injury. Then since he had to stay on the bed too long with not much to do, he now has wrist injury.

:D

I've heard that joke before.

Woodward is no genius and is terrible at his job.
But I believe the genius who negotiated the contact with Phil Jones - a player who rarely plays - was Matt Judge.

We are incapable of negotiating a pay as you play contract with a player who hardly plays.
If/when we release him (we won't sell cuz nobody will pay for him - he will leave when we allow his contract to expire) he'll probably sign for another team on a pay as you play contract. Nobody except for Matt Judge would stupid enough to pay him wages for being injured.

Jones deserve credit! To even have the guts to ask for a new contract requires huge balls! And then getting it! He must know something

It’s a good job Woody gave him a 5 year contract to protect his value!

The poster boy for our slide into mediocrity. Shit performances and big game errors rewarded with contract after contract after contract.

Yep. Just his mere presence at the club sends out the message that you will get rewarded regardless of performance at this club.

He has played his last game for the club. As injury prone as he is I think he is just frozen out, we rarely get any official update on his status.

We don’t get any official updates because there’s nothing to update on. He’s “still injured” as always. We will get notified when that status changes.

In fact I don't think he's been seen at a game ever since West Ham when he was caught on camera saying sacked in the morning.

Completely agree. Watching him get shrugged off the ball for a goal in last season's Sheffield United game doesn't get the criticism it deserves. He's a player that should get a lot more criticism than he gets given how much he earns and how little he contributes.
Messi specifically targeted him in the CL game at the Nou Camp the other year. It's painful to see such a prestige football club being represented by such a poor football player year after year.

Was there ever a play who spent more time on the injury table while still having a job as a footballer?

Some rumours that Big Sam wants to buy him back for West Brom in January.
Here Sam, have another pint of wine, Jones is a fantastic player, what's that? Injury history? Here, have another pint of wine..... £10m is a steal.

More wine?

Didn't Allardyce manage him at Blackburn before he joined United? It would be a dream if we could get Big Sam to take Jones off our hands.

I was just wondering why that poster said 'buy him back' for WBA when he'd come from Blackburn and I thought Allardyce had been managing Bolton at the time.

Allardyce gave him his debut at Blackburn. Rumour on the street was always that Allardyce talked Phil Jones up to Fergie saying he'll be England captain and what not just after he got sacked from Blackburn. Sorry for the confusion, by buy him back I meant, that he wants to manage him again.

Probably just a case of wishful thinking, like those reports that said Moyes would take Jones and Lingard off our hands in the summer. Jones could do a job for West Brom, mind.

West Brom would surely only be able to do a loan. With no guarantees for their safety, they’d be mad to risk a full transfer.
