First half he was really disappointing I thought, not even looking to pass forwards, not even putting in tackles, but second half he was great. Really turned it around.

A sign of a top player.

Unfortunately, if Anderson and Cleverly have poor first halves, you know they'll have a shit 2nd half too.

Defender who must play as a midfielder, scoring the only goal... That tells You how low is United's form but it also tells how great indeed Philip Anthony Jones is.

His defending was superb for most of the game. Made some very good interceptions and tackles as well. As long as he plays with intelligence we can continue with him in defensive midfield, no problem.

That goal was just heroic. We needed some inspiration from somewhere.

A bit shaky like the whole team in first half but he was tremendous in the second half, well taken goal, MOTM for me.

Yep. Character sadly lacking in the team at times at the moment. He can still lift things. Really good second 45.

Still a massive sign of weakness for us that a defender, that never should play in midfield, plays as a central midfield and is man of the match.

Glad to see him play well, will be a great player for us going forward.

I look forward to when he plays as a CB full time for us, he did well in the second half by sheer workrate, but he's not really a CM.

Phil Jones stats from tonight: Goals - 1, Passes completed - 54/59, Pass Success - 92%, Interceptions - 4 , Clearances - 4, Tackle Success - 100%, Headers won - 5/7

Not the Jonesest of first halves by Phil. But he was Phil in the second. Greatest goal ever? I'd say so.

I think that's pushing it a bit, don't you?

It's obviously second to his other chicken leg volley against Norwich.

True. Yes, true. I got carried away - second greatest ever. It feels wrong to use the word "second" in connection with Phil Jones, though. He doesn't really do second, does he?

Why not? He's 21 and playing well there. He has room for improvement, but what's to say he can't improve and make a midfield spot his own?

Said it again, Jones and Carrick is good enough CM duo. It's the other areas we need to improve.

 At all the people calling Phil Jones the greatest person ever. Fickle cretins.

Not because it's not true, but because you've all taken so long to realize the fact that he is indeed the greatest man of all time. Phil Jones forever. #PJ4

Jones is not a midfielder... You guys really need to improve your midfield. Playing a CB there is not the answer...

(However good he might play in the odd game)

Jones and Cleverley looked solid, gave Cleverley the freedom to roam and do what he wanted, knowing you have superman covering in behind does help. Could work and I wouldn't mind seeing a little more of it, especially with Rooney and Kagawa rotating and dropping deep to link up play, it looks like we could find a way to make this midfield work if the January window is as fruitful as usual.

He's doing ok there because we are so short of decent options, all his strengths are defensive, throwing himself into blocks, winning headers and basically doing the stuff that doesn't involve passing. His future is as a top CB IMO.

How can he be doing ok there just because we lack options? When players come back will he drop a level?

I think his time in midfield will make him a better CB in the long run. He looks far more accomplished on the ball than he was 12-18 months ago.

Yes. Cleverley is actually a very decent CM. Some people seems to forget how good he was with Carrick over first half last season. He just need someone who's mobile enough to do a one-two with him, and could help him in defensive duty. Jones can provide that outlet to him.

I think we've found our new cult hero...anyone up for some phil jones masks?

What I meant was that he looks ok in comparison to our other CM's but that doesn't actually make him good or a proper CM.

Massively. Grown in stature in midfield now. Has a much better understanding of his role there.

Weird. I don't see it Jones as CB. His display as CM is much better than as centerback. I think he's more of Matthias Sammer (just for the similarity of playing style): good enough as centerback, but he can offer much more given the freedom of midfielder.

Is a 2013 version of Fletcher. And he is 21, so there is every reason to think he will get a lot better. Whether he offers more as a defender or a midfielder in the future may boil down to where he is needed most.

You do realize we're talking about Phil Jones here? These stats dont do him justice

He's to agile, to fit and to keen to get himself stuck into a game to play as an out and out center back just yet. I think he will eventually evolve into the CB position but just now his brain and body want to break things up, get in the ball, track and cover and generally bother opposition players, he's a fecking terrier and will be vital to our success this year. Very Darren Fletcher.
