Phil Hughes Passes Away

Beyond sad news, absolute shame. Thoughts are with his family of course, and with the bowler too, don't know how he'll cope for a while, even with EVERYONE backing him. Devastating freak accident.

This is heartbreaking.
This also highlights the dangers of the 'short ball', after years of playing cricket and using the 'short ball' to 'unsettle' batsman, i have witnessed numerous injuries and retirements. This was always viewed as a 'victory' and a good tactic, especially on uncovered sunday league pitches.
Thoughts are with Abbott, it must be dreadful for him, knowing it will live with him forever. I hope there is no knee jerk reaction to this and a rule change, although i can see many calling for it now. Some players struggle against the short ball, and this weakness in their game could be said to put them in more danger of injury. As for helmets, even with full face guard I have seen countless eye socket fractures and broken noses, and even with countless redesigns these injuries still occur.

Hughes was a fantastic talent, this is such a loss, on so many different levels.
RIP.
Do you think the advent of the helmet has encouraged the use of the short pitched ball, especially at lower order batsmen? When I played there was no such thing as a helmet and bowlers were much more circumspect about bowling short balls to the lower order.

What awful news, RIP.

From the pictures he turned his head away from the ball, as you might expect, and it hit him on the back of his neck where there is no protection from the helmet.

It's a freak accident, so I hope they don't change the rules for this, but they need to look again at helmet design at the back. It's a natural inclination to turn away, exposing soft tissue to the full force of the ball.

Terrible news to wake up to
RIP. :(

Head injuries are really scary, it's so understandable that Schumacher is taking such a long time to recover.

I hope football authorities start taking head injuries seriously, we are waiting for a death in football before we do something. Having said that there is nothing anyone could have done here, what a tragic story. R.I.P

Well put - freak accident, lets improve helmets not change the game.

What awful, sad news to wake up to this was. I genuinely hoped and prayed that the first thing I heard this morning would be some sort of progress. Absolutely gutted.

Apparently a medical expert has said what happened is so rare there are only 100 reported cases, and only 1 previously caused by a cricket ball.

RIP Phil Hughes, a great cricketer and by all accounts top bloke. Sporting rivalries mean nothing on days like today.

In a press conference the doctors who treated him said that there was only 100 cases of this injury,

It compressed an artery in his neck and lead to blood going to his brain.

It was a freakish accident.

Yeah, I've had enough hits to the head myself and responded to them on the ski hill to know how quickly they go south, footballs gimg ho approach to them is shocking at times.

Anyway I think @Colin129 is on the right track, some way to improve helmets. I remember when I was bowling I was always told never ever to turn my back on the ball if it was hit back at you, but it's so hard to stop that natural instinct to turn away from the ball.

So sad :(

I remember watching him get a century against South Africa about 5 years ago. They had the world's best bowling attack which included Steyn, Ntini and Morne Morkel. Anything slightly off line he hit to the boundary with ease. He would probably have taken over from Rogers in the test team once he retired.

The Australian pitches are getting more faster and bouncier every year as teams look to finish games in 3 days to get extra bonus points but they are very difficult to bat on. Something also needs to be done to improve helmets so that this never happens again.

RIP Phillip Hughes

Phil Hughes, wearing a helmet, had twisted his head to avoid a delivery that bounced high towards his face, exposing the base of his neck.

He was playing a pull shot and in the mommentum of it when he mised the ball got hit just at the wrong spot.

Such a freak and tragic incident.

Still feel saddened by this today and thoughts go out to all his family and friends.

RIP.

Also, hope Sean Abbot isn't taking it too hard and also his teammates and those at this match. Certainly amongst the biggest tragedies ever in Cricket.

Shocking news. Really got to feel for the Bowler as well. He will have to live with this for the rest of his life

He will be devastated, I have to be honest , if it was me I doubt I could play the game again.

Me too, I have no idea how you're meant to get over it. I don't think I'd want to be near a cricket ground ever again.

RIP

Just 22 too. Scumbag websites have already put up photos of him leaving the hospital once he received the bad news.

At some point, common sense has got to prevail over people's perverse interest in things like this and the media can finally get a moral compass.
God that statement by Clarke on behalf of his family was hard to watch. Clarke really comes across as a genuinely top guy, it must've been so tough for him.

A friend of mine met Clarke at the airport on her way back from Western Australia last week and said he was absolutely lovely. In great spirits, good banter as she's English and then to see the photos of him after this tragedy. Just awful.

Absolutely devastated to hear about this. Thought he'd pull through eventually. :(

My thoughts go out to Hughes' family and Abbott at this sad time.

With this sad incident, I think a lot of people felt Hughes was susceptible to the short ball and a lot of fans I've talked to thought he struggled with it.

As for the lower order, personally I would deliberately use the short ball (hoping it would strike the upper body, helmet,) as they are generally poor at dealing with it or even attempt a poorly executed pull shot.
Its a great part of the game, and on a flat pitch lifeless pitch, its crucial.

The only problem now is that if the authorities do nothing and it should happen again - well, you can imagine the reaction.

RIP Phillip Hughes, truly shocking news, awful.

I really feel for Abbott as well, can't even imagine what he must be thinking, poor bloke.

Very sad news. A sad day in sport. I feel like this will have a big affect on cricket in the next few months especially with the World Cup in Australia on the pacey wickets. Will there be a fear from bowlers to bowl a bouncer? RIP Hughes

Didn't there used top be a rule about not bowling bouncers at the lower order and not bowling more than one bouncer in an over? Mind you, that goes back to the days of Lillie & Thompson and no helmets, I think.

There's no rule for bowling bouncers against tailenders, although the one bouncer per over is still there.

Absolute tragedy.

Apparently the injury he suffered was very rare. Only a 100 or so recorded cases.

The bowler must be in tatters.

So sad, didn't realise he was only 25! RIP

also spare a thought for the bowler. God knows what he must be going through too

Just saw on the news that he was wearing a 2013 model of the helmet and the 2014 version of the same manufacturer had a slightly extended protection zone near where he got struck. Obviously conjecture whether it would have actually made any difference

Absolutely gutted about this news. Rest in peace :(

Also feel a lot for Abbott. Hope I'm wrong but not sure if he will be able to bowl again.
