Fergie plots £12m Reina raid - Exclusive


Sir Alex Ferguson wants Pepe Reina to be Manchester *United’s new No.1.

United boss Ferguson is at the head of a queue of clubs who believe *Liverpool star Reina may become *available because of unrest at Anfield.

The Spain international is to hold talks with Liverpool’s new owners NESV after becoming concerned about the club’s long-term direction.

He could be the first man to move between Liverpool and their bitter rivals in either direction since Phil Chisnall left Old Trafford in 1964.

With Liverpool struggling under Roy Hodgson, American tycoon John W Henry faces a battle to convince top stars like Reina, Fernando Torres and Glen Johnson that the future is bright.

Ferguson has been assured that money will be made available for big signings after the Glazer family promised Wayne Rooney they will compete in the transfer market, and Reina would set them back £12million.

Liverpool do not want to sell, and especially not to their fierce rivals. But there is a growing feeling that Reina may be available.

The Spaniard is believed to be unhappy that Hodgson is using 68-year-old former keeper Mike Kelly as part of his coaching team and he has been putting Reina through some training routines.

Ferguson’s current No.1, Edwin van der Sar, turns 40 on Friday.
 
Decent goalkeeper, has PL experience and one of the best in the PL.

He's not but even so I think the fact you think that says more about the lack of top keepers around at the minute compared to past generations.

I'd rate Casillas, Cech, Buffon, Caesar and Steckelenburg ahead of him, I could probably name a few more but I can't be bothered. Still a very good keeper though and quite consistent.
 
That would be a good move.

Cheap, youngish and a great goalkeeper with bags of PL and CL experience.

But, Liverpool dont sell to us so this story is bollocks.
 
I honestly dont know how people dont see him as one of the top 5 keepers in the world, maybe if he didnt play for Liverpool people would I dunno.

But we would never ever get him, so its a ridiculous story.
 
I personally wouldn't be in favour of this. I'm not his biggest fan.

Plus, the story is most likely bollox.
 
I'd personally rather have Adler/Neuer. Riena is top quality though, no doubt. It just wouldn't happen in a millennium.
 
I reckon we should test their resolve with a £20 mil joint bid for Torres and Reina

Jesus fecking Christ can we stop with the Liverpool players? There isnt an Elvis' chance in a brothel we would ever bid for a Liverpool player and there isnt an MJLD's chance in a gay bar that they would sell us a player.

The stories are just cringeworthy and some people would honestly believe we had a chance of signing them.

He'd cost twice that, and even then he'd be a fantastic purchase (I used to have misgiving about him but he's as good as there is in the PL). But it won't happen.

I know this deal won't happen but still a GK for 25M+ ? When was the last time you saw that? GK usually don't go for that much? Juventus offered Buffon for 20M - he is or atleast was one of the best in the world.
 
Wouldn't say no, he's a good keeper, not as special as the Liverpool fans make out though.
 
Would love it to happen because he's the best in the premiership but it won't.

Real, Barca, Shitty, Chelski, the 4 teams who can outbid us all have their GK sorted.
 
No thanks. Dont really rate him all that highly and he is a bit dodgy at times as well. I mean he is good, but on the list of keepers I would like us to sign he is actually a fair way down the list.
 
Some spastics here. Reina's very good, one of the best.

Not that it matters as he won't be coming here.
