Paulo Dybala

We're swapping Lukaku for Dybala?!

What's the catch? There has to be something off, right?

Dybala for Lukaku would be a fantastic exchange but I think some of you guys are a bit overly optimistic about his positional versatility (or lack of it).

A bit like Griezmann, he is a second striker pure and simple. He isn't suited to be a winger (was terrible in that role for Juve last year), he isn't going to play up front in a one striker formation (he has almost never done this), and he isn't going to be a trequartista type in a 4-4-2 diamond (he has played for teams that played this formation, but almost always as one of the strikers not as the trequartista).

You can play him as a "10" and call it a 4-2-3-1 but its really 4-4-1-1. When you're out of possession he's not going to be dropping back and becoming one of the midfielders in a 4-3-3 defensive shape so your shape is going to be 4-4-2 and your wingers are going to need to work a lot defensively. And when you're in possession he's not going to be dropping deep to help a lot with the buildup.

I think he could still be brilliant for United, especially if Solksjaer wants to play 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 anyway. But he definitely has positional limitations.
I definitely agree. But if he shines for us it'll b a big lift for our attack, and in the end replacing Lukaku who is as it is a misfit, with someone as talented as him is a good deal. I have my concerns which you've outlined but I'm positive about this being a smart move. We're using a striker who just doesn't fit and has techncial deficiencies with one of the more technically impressive second strikers around.

Are you kidding me man? Only Martial and Rashford are capable of playing as a #9 and we’ve been through this. Mata and Sanchez aren’t good enough. You need an extra option to play as a #9. It’s a long season and injuries can factor in.

No I'm not kidding you. We have Martial, Rashford and Greenwood who are 9's, Lingard's best games last season were as a false 9, Sanchez can play 9.

However, all other subjective arguments aside I don't want players here who either see the club as a stepping stone to Barca or Madrid, are here only for the money, or because we are their only option because they're being forced out of their current club. Dybala would qualify for at 2 of these and probably all 3. He has no dreams of playing for United and if he came it would be for (another) ludicrous wage. Don't want.

Being able to play there and being effective are two completely different things. It will take time for Greenwood to settle into the big boys league. Lingard can’t play as a false nine. And when was the last time Sanchez was available to be picked for a game and when was the last time he was actually good for us?

Absolutely.

If it happens, swapping Lukaku for Dybala will be pure profit. You not only get rid of a huge problem, but you add a fantastically talented - if somewhat positionally limited - player in his prime.

Put him in our #10 role or behind martial and rashford and he'll hit 30 for the season

Dybala would be a big bet but not the kind you can pass. Especially with that conditions.

I would love Dybala signing for us and I couldn't give a rats ass if it meant the likes of Lingard and Mata don't play.

Greenwood will only develop into a top player if he's given game time. That's far less likely if we sign Dybala.

The rest is just subjective comments on players effectiveness, for me Lingard is a far better player than he's given credit for on here, Sanchez is still a player with quality and would probably be more effective centrally now his pace has diminished.

He'll certainly improve your team, possibly a lot, providing you can figure out where/how to play him. If we can't get Lo Celso then for sure I'd be happy to see him at Spurs.
Dybala is a better, more established player. You had to get a subtle little dig in though didn't you

Does anybody else worry we have another AdM situation here if he does arrive?

Nope. Maybe he is reluctant to go as it's his home, but if his agent is here to discuss and he has said favourable things about us in the past I'm sure he could come around to the idea, maybe Pogba stays too and they are good mates. Di Maria did not hide the fact he wanted PSG and we only got him as we out bid them. Of course it could be a similar deal or he could flourish and become a top player for us. Its certainly worth the gamble for me because our abundance of average players are not really getting us anywhere.

Greenwood is 17. No one is asking to keep him in the reserves or sell him. He will get his chance but it’s crazy to depend on a 17 year in case we have injuries. Lingard is here cause he is an academy player. No other reason. He is way more into building his brand on Instagram than playing football. Pogba does it it but he has the talent to back it up.

Lingard is one of the hardest working and dedicated players we have. He isn't the best player in the squad and obviously needs guidance on the way he presents himself on social media, but he cares about the club and works his socks off on the pitch, unlike some some others last season.

I'm going to leave this pointless circular argument here. I'm just hoping we won't get Dybala as is goes against everything I thought we were trying to do this summer.

What's his attitude like?

If its him or Lukaku I'd definitely prefer Dybala. What's annoying me about Lukaku, not that I want him to play, but unless he's genuinely injured, is he hasn't played any of the pre season games or really done any training so if we do end up stuck with keeping him he isn't ready to be available for selection so for the first few games at least it's like we dont have him anyway. I know Ole probably prefers Rashy but Lukaku should at least be fit and ready to be called upon if needed.

That may be so but that doesn't mean he should be within 100 miles of our first team if we want to progress.

And the only thing signing dybala would go against is improvement of our team.

Needs guidance on social media? He is going to be 27 ffs at year end. He isn’t 17 to be told to be more mature and that playing for United you will always be in the spotlight so you need to watch what you do.

The only question I'm asking myself is why is Juve willing to let him go? Does he have some sort of injury issue nobody knows of? It's just bizarre to me. Perhaps it's just Alexis 2.0 paranoia.

Probably not, the 10 is a big deal at United. Don’t see why Rashford would ever want to change from it.

The guy grew up watching Rooney as well as played next to him when he was captain.
I reckon Martial would get the 9 back, Rashford would stay 10 and Dybala would be 11.

I mean, there are fans that say Lukaku will do well in Serie A because it’s a lower quality league and fail to notice that Dybala only scored 5 league goals from 30+ games last season.

Our history with Argentinian players is also horrific.

He played away from his natural position in fairness. Out on the right was it not?

He simply doesn't fit with Ronaldo and Juventus chose the latter which is understandable even though I find it risky.
