Paul Pogba's mentality...

nothing wrong with his mentality, kid left manchester united because he felt he deserved more and because he believed he could succeed and prove himself somewhere else, he did that, if that doesn't speak for his mentality than i don't know what does. he's also not one to hide.

he's having a good season, not great but good, could be in double digits for assists if our finishing wasn't laughable at times and for goals too with a bit of luck, too many balls hit the woodwork for him. his performances have taken a hit since carrick's took a hit and mourinho stopped playing carrick and we switched to a midfield two. he looked better in a midfield of three.

hopefully, we get the adequate players to play with three in midfield again or he adapts to a midfield of two and is better prepared for it next season, but overall, i'm happy with him.

A single midfielder does not dominate games in the modern game unless there is a mismatch in quality between the teams. Zidane utilizes Casemiro to give Kroos the freedom to be creative, Guardiola used Busquets to give Xavi freedom, Makelele was used by Del Bosque and Mourinho to give Zidane/Lampard freedom. This is exactly the reason why Ferguson was not as formidable in Europe as he was domestically; his insistence on two central midfielders led to his team being dominated by 3 central midfielders who were specialized in their roles. Ferguson adapted his management style by employing man-marking to nullify a central midfielder making the midfield battle 2v2.

To expect Pogba to dominate big games is simply naive; most people remember the France v Brazil semi-final in the 2006 world cup as a game that was dominated by Zidane. But a closer inspection of the game allows you to see that Makelele was shadowing Zidane in deeper areas to nullify a threat if he lost the ball and Viera and the wide players were giving zidane options in more advanced areas because Brazil were targeting Zidane whenever he got the ball. Pogba has dominated games against weaker opposition because they lack the midfield quality.

At the moment Pogba is relying on Fellaini, Martial and our LB for the day as options. Fellaini is not a footballer, Martial just wants to dribble at defenders all day and our LB options arent particularly good. Hererra is the only actual midfielder other than Pogba with the right skillset to play in Midfield. Carrick does not have the mobility to play in Midfield; his lack of mobility has been exploited many times over the past 2-3 years; the most recent example was against Liverpool where he was invisible for the first half and subbed off. He can get away with it against weaker opposition or in home europa league games where he is given more time.

Pogba is doing fine as our creative midfielder. To expect him to also nullify attacking threats and score double figures a season is asking too much of any one player.

hit the old bar for the 6th, 7th, 8th time tonight, not sure what.

There's no question that he has been unlucky on the stats side. Has shot and passed the ball quite well all year and got very little stats wise to show, except for the highest number of passes and the highest number of through balls in the prem

When he keeps it simple, hes majestic.

When he tries to force things, hes so frustrating.

I doubt anyone can question his attitude nowadays. Even when he does not have a great game, his work rate improved and he's by far our best passer in the team. He should have so many assists more

I wish our fans would crawl out of his ass for 5 fecking minutes. It can't be any good for his mentality to have his own fans on his back for every tiny little mistake. He shows a lot of bravery on the pitch and he's confident, and has the balls to keep trying things. Let's not drum that out of him please, because the difference in creativity from the middle of the park with him on the pitch is like night and day. Give him some breathing space to improve and cut out the silly mistakes, I am sure him and Jose are working on it.

The work-rate yesterday was brilliant, and we have little scrotes coming on here calling him selfish. Get a grip!

Well said the boy is a breath of fresh air in our team. Most exciting midfielder since that wee ginger prince with the same first name. Love Pogboom he's going to be the best in the world in the next couple of years. Glad we have him.

I sometimes feel like I'm the only person who has enjoyed watching him in all but about three games this season.

Always wants the ball, always liable to do something unpredictable but entertaining. He's very much a united player and he's a few shots off the crossbar and poor finishes away from having won us a bunch of games.

You're not alone. I love watching him play, the goals will come and when it does he'll be recognised as the one of the world's best midfielder. His overall performances are still great.

Absolutely.

This thread is funny in a way, his mentality is absolutely top drawer. Surrounded by more experienced players but he's always looking for the ball, always trying to create something, always driving forward, puts in a shift every game. He takes the initiative. Superb player, glad to have him.

This. He often seems to take one touch to many and often tries the spectacular when he should do the simple.

That being said, i have no worries about his mentality. It's clear he want's to succeed here and his frustration on the pitch when hes having a bad day shows this. His problem is not mentality, it's maturity. He is still young and once he matures he will improve that side of his game. His technique, vision and physique is all world class and im confident he will unlock his true potential once he lowers his shoulders a bit

Same here.

I am (very) happy with most of his performances and his attitude. If he would have had a bit more luck he could easily have at least 3-4 more goals (freckin' post and bar...) and 5+ more assists. Then nobody would consider him having a poor season. I enjoy watching him and as I have said above I am very happy to we've actually managed to get him last summer!

Couldn't agree more and he's only going to get better.

I agree but for me probably 5 or so games. Most of them down to team mates not moving or putting in enough thought or effort in there game.

During the frustrating games you can see that there is only a number of times you can choose the safe pass before teams close you down. If a player moves he will find him.

Pogba's recent games portray his better concentrations, stronger drive and will to win, intent on playing more efficiently - the simple effective plays, and greater efforts - defensive contributions.

Better and improving mentality. He's starting to dominate matches and carry us. :smirk:Glimpse of proper B2B.

His problem is not mentality, it's maturity.

For me, that sums it up so well.
Right or wrong, people will always place his performances against his price tag (as people expect Bale, Ronaldo, Messi type numbers for that price)
However for United, hes still a player who can improve and isnt the finished article (which in a way is scary given what weve seen so far)

We are a much better team with him vs without him. But added to that, I think we will see the best out of him when hes deep, by having people like Rashford to run into space behind the defence (like our first goal yesterday).
Or when hes in a three, (but of course, once he sorts out his finishing lol - he should be double figures for both goals and assists tbh)

You are not alone and people are picking up quickly.. He has been great lately and his workrate and passing has just gotten so much better. Lucky to have him here..

Pogbas workrate last night was incredible. Only matched by the countless full paced sprints of Rashford. Pogba has the balls/bravery to succeed but just needs to take a little more care sometimes to complete his forward passes.

Once he plays with a better defensive midfielder alongside him I believe he will flourish. This will then allow him to contribute with a few more goals also.
