Today was almost more impressive than last week because so many other utd players were fecking awful today.

The fact he maintained his standard from last week deserves praise.

He's being deployed as a 'Mezzala' and it's working well for him. Playing him in midfield in a deeper role would require him to be more disciplined which takes a lot away from his game. He likes to take risks and play with flair, which means he will lose the ball from time to time but having him high up the pitch as a half winger suits him well as we saw today.

Best player on the pitch.

Agreed. Such a shame Mourinho and Ole played him deep for such large periods of his time here.

Of course he is deployed as such.

But, would it be ok to do it against every team. That means our left wing is non-functional in terms of having a runner behind the defense etc. If we are playing him in that position, we should be playing with a front two who can and will stay out wide more often. Normal 4 3 3 or 4 2 3 1 with him like that would not work.

The team being toothless in term of movement ahead of the midfield today was expected due to that and Martial being played up front.

It's the job of the fullback to get in behind tbf. It's the fullback that should provide the width.

TBF, as good as Shaw, he can't do that the whole game or even every game as he has shown this match.

And, I am talking about quick runners behind to use Pogba's quick passing. No FB will be quick enough for that in a 4 defender system.

To me, naturally, Pogba is a better passer when he does not have much time on the ball and see a runner in front of him. Once he has time, he dwells.

Very impressive, shame he couldn't have scored his left foot shot after creating the chance for himself. Got another assist.

There's plenty of possibilities to get in behind. The LCM could run in behind via a overload, the fullback could do it or even one of the other forwards could create space for Pogba to run into the vacated space.

LCM has to cover behind him btw same as the LB. Structure wise, it is not doable the whole game. We will have a hole that other team will target it.

And, it is why I said we should play with a 2 forward system to take advantage of his quick passing on the left side. Right now, we have no left forward to do that making our left wing ineffective as it should.

Pogba should not be allowed to leave.

We should try to improve the team not weaken it.

About 5 levels above everyone else today, the only one that looked like making something happen.

Easily the best player on the pitch, shame that left footer he crafted for himself didn't go in, he's so much better when he's more rree to attack as most people know.

We can't do what you're saying the whole game, no matter how we setup. To attempt do that the whole game, we need to throw players forward and cause overloads which would then potentially open up space.

A 2 forward system will do. Stay wide to run into the space when we do counter and Pogba gets the ball. Bruno is good at that too.

He was definitely our best player when on the ball but as I said in the matchday thread, our issues are collective Pogba and Bruno should be on the ball a lot more, the team needs to find a way to feed them consistently and with ease. Last week stats in terms of volume were pitiful, Pogba and Bruno made the best of it but it wasn't a recipe for success. I probably sound like a lunatic with some of my takes but I want people to think about this, Bruno and Pogba combined 93 touches last week, these two players are our most technical players, our best passers and they combine 93 touches. We won the game because they are very talented and have been incredibly efficient but we can't expect that every weeks and need address that issue. That applies to Sancho too, he isn't going to create if he isn't on the ball more often.

Easily our best player. Could have scored a great goal. Somehow also got an assist too, his 5th of this season.

It’s pretty normal to have a lopsided team. Our team c. 2008 was a pretty similar shape with Evra providing the width on the left as Giggs, Park and Rooney all drifted in.

I've read on here before as well that he isn't suited to the prem. He is literally the perfect player to have in the prem. Physically he can hold his own against any player but technically he is even better. He must be an absolute nightmare to play against when he's in form. He's so strong aswell.

I knew he would stay this summer and I think we sign a new contract with us for the following reasons.

We will offer him whatever psg will.

The Premier league is the place to be at this moment in time.

He has spent alot of his time at the club and loves the club and his teammates love him.

He is happy living in cheshire (anyone would with the house he has) and so is his wife Zulay who is working with a North West interior design company and seems very content.

I could be wrong of course but I actually wouldn't blame him because for some reason a huge chunk of our fanbase don't like him (I'm not sure whether it's mostly online fans) but they do have a loud voice.

I know we played like that at times back in the days and now. But, I am not sure if it gives us much of visible advantage with this squad. And, I thought we were trying to fix it.

And, the likes of Park, Rooney etc were a lot more mobile, speedy and set themselves up for a counter all the time. Not to mentioned that team work rate. We don't have any player like them in today's line up. At least not as good as them. We looked very toothless and didn't have enough players in the box or not quickly enough.

For one instance, Tommy crossed a ball across the goal in 2nd half and we had NO one in the box and left side was completely empty. You should not expect your LB to be up there trying to tap in at that point. You probably would not see like that in old Fergie team when his team is pressing for a winner in late 2nd half. Ole tried to fix it but it was too late at that point.

Oh yeah there were plenty of relatively toothless games with that setup around the time we were qualifying for consecutive CL finals. Our first game of the season we won the CL was a 0-0 against Reading. Nobody on the end of crosses, limited creativity, narrow attack, all the jazz. These sorts of games happen. After scoring 5 goals in the last game and scoring more goals last year than any time since we’ve won the league, I don’t think you can point to a lack of goals as a big problem. Even free scoring teams struggle to score in games.

For me that was a far better performance today than last week. Was absolutely unplayable for most of the game, seriously impressive and for all the critique of Ole I think Pogba out wide is an absolute masterstroke! Shame he didn’t bury that shot with his left foot because the skill beforehand was sublime!

The problem with putting Pogba out on the left is that he is our only Midfielder who can actually pass the ball.

The midfield pairings we have are simply not good enough.

I am talking about fundamental structure of the team in long term. We know that we have issue breaking team down when they pack in their box. Pogba's (and Bruno's) passing and thru balls can be devastating on counters (see Greenwood's goal in Leed's game on that side). It is just no one is there to take advantage of it often on that side. This had nothing to do with Leeds game. Every team will have some games they score a lot or more than their capability.

And, I talked about this issue back in Leeds game too. I just don't want us to have long term issue by shoehorning 2 AMs in the line-up without proper structure to take advantage of it.

I did offer my solution to it. This is just not a kneejerk reaction for this game.

Bingo.
We've simply had a crap midfield since Scholes retired the first time around, and get upset when Pogba isn't both a work horse and a WC playmaker at the same time.

He was excellent today. Although all the drama with Raiola and his contract makes it hard for me to love him like I did when he signed I really hope that he signs on. My feeling is that he will.

And putting Pogba in the middle means we don't have enough press, discipline and defensive cover there. It's the Pogba conundrum since 2016.

The midfield pairings we have are simply not good enough.

That's true but we have better pairings than the ones we used today. McFred is far from ideal, none of them is a good passer of the ball, but it's miles better than Matic + anyone on god's green earth.

I have no idea how bad VDB must be for Matic to be starting ahead of him, but if he's that bad we need two CM/DMs to replace both Matic and VDB and ideally bench McFred (ore at least on of them).

EDIT: One the subject of his performance, I felt he was very good today, our best player along with Greenwood and Shaw

I'm getting Ozil 15/16 vibes where he's putting in world class performances but is being let down by his team. Ozil only had Alexis and Cazorla keeping up with him before Cazorla's unfortunate injury ended his season. At the moment, Bruno, Shaw and Greenwood are our Alexis and Cazorla in that they're the only ones who don't look levels below.

There's so much we have to hope for. We have to hope Martial gains some semblance of form, hope that Sancho settles asap, hope that Rashford and Cavani don't miss too many games, hope that we bring in a top cm.
