He had a very good game but there were just some times where he was going through the motions, needlessly chipping the ball into places where nobody was. It reminded me a bit of what Sir Alex said about Scholes in his book about creative players sometimes getting a bit lost and overcomplicating simple things.

All creative types tend to ponder on the ball a bit, especially within the offensive third, because they are looking for the best pass and not the "pass-to-the-next-man" option that average players usually take. Often when such a player is playing with players beneath his level he tends to look bad simply because the movement of the other players is not matching his vision.

Nah. Pogba ponders over the ball more often than any other top player in his position which is usually a lot deeper than the final 3rd. It hurts him time and again in the bigger games.

Part of this is that he is playing in a team which lacks off ball movement

Pogba is much better suited to a roaming midfield position in front of 2 others. He has gone back since his injury but maybe Mourinho could help by playing him in a midfield 3 instead of 2.

"It's true (being benched) has never happened to me, but it can strengthen me. You have to go through these periods to make you stronger."
"There is no problem with Mourinho. Ask the coach if you want to know why I play less. I respect his choices."
“It’s too early to talk about a departure from United, the situation can change.”
“Neymar? I said I dream of playing with him, [Lionel] Messi or Cristiano [Ronaldo], but that doesn’t mean
Of course pogba is happy to rest for a few games or play as subs.

The crux of that problem is that what is best for Pogba is not necessarily what is best for the team.

Does it? Lukaku, Lingard, Mata and Sanchez are pretty decent it. Our fullbacks don't support enough sure.

If you don't have a great option on you move the ball and maybe next time you get it back there is an option. You don't hold on it until you see a fantastic run or try force it.

It's not just him though, as a team i don't think we move the ball enough to create openings. We can be impatient

Yes its been a massive issue before Jose even arrived. There are plenty of times a midfielder receives the ball, moves it sideways gets it back, looks forward and no one is moving. Its apparent to me in most games we play.

Yes those players have decent movement, but there just isn't enough of it sometimes which can lead to our game slowing down. Plenty of times as fans we moan about forward passes when quite a lot of the times when the CMs have the ball the forwards are not creating enough passing options.

That's true, but it's true he could and should be releasing the ball sooner in many cases.

I agree with that, which is why I only said part of it.

I thought a big reason for his improved performance were also that Sanchez wasn't dropping so deep into his zone. Pogba always had options ahead of him to play through the lines. Made a big difference IMO.

Still think we'll need to play a 3 against City though.

Has missed last two games vs City which is really annoying especially this seasons game but I hope he's ready on Saturday because he's the kind of player I feel they'll struggle to handle. If he was playing at OT we may have got something out of the game because he was on top form.

Found the vid, but it won't play, country restricted.
Not the first time he's being honest and speaking his mind. Interview is in French, so maybe some translation issue. Some of the indications there is not so clear. Anyway, doubt he's leaving this soon (this summer or next). That would be twice leaving without putting big marks at this club i.e. winning big trophies and help raise the level of this team to the top. Ideally wants him to stay forever, but just in case, similar to C.Ronaldo, leave after winning us many big trophies. If he wants to leave that is.
Raiola need his payday, as sure as the sun setting in the east... Or was it west?? Hmm, confused.

Agree and also in that game there were a few times runs were made and passes were on but we didnt have a player of his quality to pick the pass

Exactly. Against Man City you're not going to see much of the ball so players like Pogba are extremely important in the transitions from defence to attack. These games suit him perfectly. More than the games where we face teams with 10 men behind the ball and there's no space in behind.

I would absolutely love that to happen.

Pogba more than has the talent to do that to any midfielder in the world.

Problem is Mourinho thinks Pogba can do that in a midfield two or with a third 'midfielder' in Mata/Lingard/Alexis/Fellani.

You are only as good as your weakest link at this level and unfortunately we have too many in a system that protects the hardworking rather than the talented.

This is the thing people don't get: he most likely won't be able to do it against city for the most obvious reason which is the fact that the rest of the team simply aren't good enough for the most part. If you mark Pogba tightly enough and everyone else is hiding from the ball then he won't be able to do much.

Against Swansea Pogba may have shown what he is capable of but it's not really Pogba raising his game, it's the rest of the team being comfortable against that level of opposition. Against better opposition they all seem to wilt with the exception of Matic and Sanchez, and you can't expect a midfielder like Pogba to do it all on his own.

It's really that simple.

So you're basically saying, Pogba will likely have a poor game against City because the rest of the team isnt up to his standard? Nothing to do with Pogba at all?

I'd be surprised if City place too much emphasis on him and mark him any more tightly then any of our other players as you suggest, because he simply isnt up to City's level yet.

It is simple i agree, but not for the reasons you are saying in my view. Hope I am wrong of course.

I just shook my head at that post that you're quoting. Ludicrous assertion. Pogba goes missing in big games because of his teammates. Nothing to do with him. Honest to God, I thought I'd read it all. I was wrong.

Yes agreed, took me a while to respond but it was a bit silly.

That's because he plays like a playmaker when he isn't a real playmaker. United need someone like Isco or Thiago to get more out of Pogba. As it is there's too much focus on him doing something with the ball and it's a responsibility he can't handle but take that figurative weight of his shoulder and watch him play like he had literal weight taken off his shoulders.

Has there ever been a player who has been given so many excuses by his own fans? Him playing poorly is never his fault, it seems.
Because every game, however shit he’s playing, he does something you just think, “wow, no one else could have done that”.

Albeit only for 30 seconds.

So basically, put a futsal player on the pitch and drool about his skills and pull your hair out for his overall performance? If Pogba is able to do what no other player can, then he has the tools, which shows that he needs to show more consistency, keep things simpler and raise his game. At this stage, there should be no more excuses. He's not 19 anymore either. He's 25 and entering his prime.

Has there ever been a player as good as Pogba, who's played as consistently well as Pogba has this season, who's been so completely lambasted for a spell of poor form ?

Ronaldo is the only example I can think of

Nani.

I also strongly disagree that Pogba has played consistently well. He's had spells where he's been good, especially at the beginning of the season. However, he doesn't turn up for the big games at all, and there always seems to be an excuse. There's no denying the talent, but the application of that talent is questionable.

“Played as consistently well as Pogba”?! Are you serious?! I must have missed that spell!!

Consistent is not a word I would associate with Pogba just yet. There are too many games or halves of games where he just doesn't seem to fancy it. He neither has that crazy drive to win the ball and get it moving, nor the drive to make sure he gets in the box and causes some havoc that most top midfielders have. That's not to say he won't get there, I still think he's quite juvenile mentally a la Yaya, I just would never accuse him of being consistent yet.

He will face City this week. I estimate Pep will rest some players for the 2nd leg. So, it will be a weaken City.

If he can not make big performance in the derby against tormented City, even if we dont win, lets agree that he is not good enough.

Big performance : in attack and defense. Not just meaningless pass or hollywood ball.

Lets wait.

I think we should sit down after the City game and look at every player an ask 1) Is he more than 24 years old? 2) Did he have a big performance against City, in attack as well as defensively?

Any player who is a yes on the first and a no on the second, we should sell.

Even if City was beaten by Liverpool, they're still very strong team which is going to win the league this season. No doubt United will struggle on the match with City. If you sell all the players who don't do well against City. Then we have to sell all of our players and no one will be left.

Jesus. Pogba? Consistent?

Your entitled ur opinion, so is everyone.

Looking through the caf ratings for the season, not the last few weeks, only Baily Jones Shaw matic Lukaku and Martial are higher rated over the season.

Some of those have only played a handful of games really so you'd have to ignore the ratings there.

He's more assists 14, than any other player in the squad and joint second MOM's of all our outfield players.

So unless your judging him against a different criteria than the rest of the squad then the problem isn't Pogba.
