Pau Torres

He’s got about 6 midfielders defending 5 yards ahead of him. This is nothing the likes of Tarkowski or Dunk would do against us in the league in tetchy away games
This

Difficult game to analyse him as we haven't exactly put their defence under any real pressure

He's essentially a part of a 11 man defense, so I wouldn't give him too much credit. Plus our attack hasn't exactly put him under too much pressure.

Albiol has made 10 clearances, 1 tackle, 0 interceptions and 0 blocked shots

Torres has made 4 clearances, 0 tackles, 0 interceptions, 2 blocked shots

Bailly has made 3 clearances and 1 interception and Villarreal have barely got the ball in our half

If 1 of them would improve us its Albiol who would at least help us clear out the set pieces

sign this guy asap, an absolute rolls royce

Didn't look outstanding. Villarreal set up to drop deep, his job was made easy. Good pen but certainly didn't look like he could become next level.

You're joking if you think tonight's game is a good representation of how we would play with him.

Good player none the less, but no idea if he'd be good for us based on that.

I thought he looked very good and composed. Albiol too. Though Varane is my preference.

Very good on the ball, but definatly not the defender we should be targeting for me. As a poster said, he had five people in front of him, he generally had to defend a 5yard radius around him, that is why he looked so assured this evening. I just still see a better version of Lindelof the more I see him, not sure defensively in the premiership he is the right man for us

If you had a choice on tonight's performance who would you have
Lindelof, Bailly or Torres?
I know who I wouldn't want and that's the 2 clowns that we have playing for us.

I don't think he had a bad game. The point is, he wasn't really tested as the whole of his side got set up in defence mode. This was not the match to judge him on.

Not the match, but one of them and a European final. His greatest attribute compared to Varane is that he's left footed IMV.

He had 5 midfielders in his lap helping him do his job. There’s no way to judge his ability to defend based on that. Loved neat on the ball though.

Good player but I think we need someone truly world class to partner Maguire next season, a Varane or a Marquinhos. If either Bailly or Tuanzebe leave though he'd be a fantastic pickup for squad depth.

This makes no odds really when he rarely needed to show his defensive skills. I'm not saying he isn't decent but I've read posts like 'a Rolls Royce performance' etc... That's a little excessive on tonight's game. In our side, for example, he wouldn't get that kind of protection and he would be expected to do more 1v1 defending. As I said, it wasn't the game to judge him on.

There's been a whole season of games with which to judge him. You cannot judge his ability based on tonight, due to the way Villarreal set. Even then, he was still clean, but that performance means little to understanding his ability.

Some people judge CBs based on how "cool" they look on the ball and not making an obvious defensive cock up leading to a goal. Thats your "rolls royce"

Sure, I wasn't in love with this performance, just thought he looked composed and assured. Which I'm led to believe is what he looks normally. And he's a starter for Spain, so we'll see this summer. In any case, seems to be closer to Real than United, if rumours from Spain are to be believed.

This is not the guy that save our problems next year! In three years maybe. But I am expecting progress next year!!!

Looks a decent player but what this game showed us is we need proven leaders. All chips have to go on Varane.

Nothing notably better than what we've got, just playing in a better defensively organised team.

We should be aiming higher.

Played in a team of 11 defenders today, so hard to take much from it. Great penalty though.

Exactly, there was nothing tonight to single him out as the ideal partner for Maguire.

Do not want
He has the same annoying hairstyle as lindelof which means he has to brush it from his eyes every 5 seconds ....,,,

I was impressed with him tonight.

People are saying "he's another Lindelof", which is obviously true in that he's the same type of defender. But the club may well want that type of defender, as many top clubs do. There's a reason so many top sides place emphasis on a player's ability on the ball and that's Torres' strength. He should look at his best when his side are dominating and he's able to show his talent on the ball.

For that reason it was good to see another side to his game today, with him performing well in a backs-to-the-wall situation. It doesn't matter if Albiol was better again, because Torres is the one top clubs will be interested in.

God knows I wouldn't back some of our CBs not to feck up in that situation.

Torres proved he was a leader tonight. Yes, he had fair few players in front of him, but you could see how he was organising the players around him. Before tonight I wasn't fully sure he was the man for us but after tonight I was more convinced that he could do a good job for us.
He's a million miles better than Lindelof.
