I saw the 442 video with Adam Cleary on why Dorgu fits… I guess it makes sense. It’s a bit bizarre that we’re reaching into a different league to an obscure club and paying 40m.
To me, Alvaro looks to be the better player with higher upside.
Also even more bizarre, we had a RB, Wan Bissaka, who was fast, physical, had a high work rate and was a decent ball progressor, who probably would’ve thrived in Amorim’s system as a RWB. I just hope to hell Amorim works out. We’re ostensibly changing our player development and youth setup to develop very specialized player.

Unless there’s two AWB’s then I have no idea why you’re rewriting history. We spent years bemoaning AWB’s limitations in the attacking third but now he’s left he’s suddenly missed?
Amorim wants him and only time will tell if Dorgu is the answer but AWB had time enough to prove he was but he just wasn’t.
Ball progression and attacking fluidity are two different things. I don’t think AWB was a good attacking fullback. But he did attack space as a FB, was good about tracking back, a good 1v1 defender… if you watched the YouTube videos of Dorgu and the 442 video… well, Dorgu doesn’t look like an attacking savant by any means. His passing stats are abysmal. AWBs passing stats were much better.
AWB had his limitations, and in a 4-2-3-1 he wasn’t particularly good overlapping and putting balls into the box. The responsibilities of the wingback are different from the fullback. The wingback has to run his socks off, be good in 1v1 defending and ball progression, and hopefully put a decent ball into the box. Dorgu has one measly assist in like 30 appearances. Again, not saying AWB was amazing, just saying he probably could have played wingback competently for Amorim.
I’m fine to let things play lay out. Amorim wants him, let’s hope he ends up being amazing. I just don’t see how a pretty limited 20 year old is going to drastically change our results.
Will any LWB change our results? They’re not brought in to score goals for us. He should help us on the left side and the most important thing is he’ll give balance to the side. We need a clinical ST to come in and help us get results.
I'm 100% certain he wouldn't thrive as a RWB in Amorim's system. Would have the same limitations that Maz is showing and would be even worse. Seems Dorgu is our main target currently. Guess his versatility is important as he can play both WBs role and play in midfield as well if needed.

I mean… maybe? Fine margins and all that. Who is a prototypical LWB? Isn’t Grimaldo highly thought of? Whoever plays LWB for Atalanta? I thought Dumfries was excellent in the right wingback role for the Dutch national side. We actually need both because neither Dalot or Maz are wingback types.
Actually Shaw was quite good as the LWB for England, but he’s never going to play again, I’m sure of it.

Maybe. As far as I’m concerned, the last transfer windows were disasters. Hojlund and Zirkzee are not competent strikers at this level and certainly not Man United 30 goals a season strikers.

The comparisons with AWB are ridiculous since Dorgu looked for better going forward to me, but AWB is actually playing as a WB right note under Potter at West Ham!

Even at €40m that’s around £34m. This isn’t crazy money these days. And United don’t want to pay €40m, we are trying to pay €35m. If we achieve that it’s under £30m.

Yes of course they would. We have little width at the moment and teams can just ignore a large part of the pitch. We can't progress the ball down the wings quickly or effectively meaning we are going through the meat of every team we play against i.e the middle and in a formation like we are playing you will likely get shut down quite quickly. You can't play this system without functioning WBs. If we magically had 2 class WBs we would look a different team offensively.
This team desperately need some athleticism so that’s why it makes sense to go for Dorgu over Alvaro.

Yeah, the point made about some of his poor stats and how it doesn’t impact his game for the role he plays…was reassuring.
To be honest every time we sign a player, there's always a video like this. There was one for Mount and heck I remember an indepth article that explained why Fellaini was a master stroke and would unlock us. Lets just wait and see how he actually performs for us.

Watched his highlights from a game against AC Milan last year and he seemed decent in that particular game. Strong in the tackle and has decent pace.

Even if Dorgu is raw if Amorim thinks he can fulfil a particular function that's good enough for me. I recall most people moaning about Valencia when he signed and again he fulfilled a specific need.

I don’t think anyone is raving about Dorgu on the Cafe, quite the opposite in fact.
Having watched him play football live for a grand total of 0 mins, I am 100% keeping an open mind.
But a dose of positivity doesn’t harm anyone
On that front people should use the likes of Isla or Lichtsteiner both were excellent wingbacks but neither racked up stats. In general wingbacks aren't stats machines, they are entirely support players, they make things easier for their nearest teammates, by either being solid defenders that lighten the defensive load for midfielders/defenders or by being solid 1v1 attackers that require attention from the defense and therefore stretch it for other attackers inside. People may want both from the same player but that's nearly impossible, you have some freak athletes and selfless players like Valencia who did both at their prime but it's not common.
If you couldn’t see AWB progressing the ball by carrying it up the pitch I don’t know what to tell you other than go back and watch again with your eyes open. He had many faults but ball progression wasn’t one
Wan Bissaka at Palace had better highlights than Dorgu now, and he did look the same or better in ball carrying pre purchase.
He's also doing quite well at West Ham in this department.
I just don’t get why people have to knock down what players are good at just because he no longer plays for United. He has enough faults to take aim at without making up new narratives. Ball progression is not one of his weak points.
If a player isn't going to help change results its literally pointless to sign them.
I think its his mentality. When the team is disjointed or nervous he's not one to trust his ability, but if there's a progressive approach systemically across the pitch, hel be willing to partake and show off what he can do. He used to be a winger in the academy if I'm not mistaken.
