Patrick Dorgu | 2024/25 Performances

I don’t care what you think buddy. I’m not going to trapse through pages of redcafe posts to keep you happy.

I was told on numerous occasions that getting a LWB will solve all our issues and allow us to play 343 properly. Let’s see if it’s a miracle worker.
Even if that is true, it would have been based on the idea we would have a proper wingback (ie. Amad) on the right as well. Losing Amad at the same time as gaining Dorgu leaves us largely standing still.

We finally have a left wing back who bombs forward and Garnacho decides to ignore him every time on the overlap.

Some thought buying one or two players might bring us forward in any way. Which of course is nonsense. We need half a new squad. Simple as that.

He won his arial duels, made some good runs and had a couple of decent crossing. Of cause he needs time, but is already miles ahead of getting used to PL than many of our newcomers.

Love his speed and backtracking, will become really useful

Good game yesterday. Only got a yellow thanks to insanity from Onana and then Garnacho just outright refusing to give the ball on the overlap...good from me all things considered.

Seems like he’ll become a very important part of the team. Just wish Garnacho would use him a lot more on the overlap but by him overlapping he does create the space for Garnacho to cut inside but he needs to know when to do that and when to use Dorgu.

I hope that will change. Is Garnacho refusing or is he just so used to nobody being there he's not thinking about the pass.

With Dorgu we now also have a right footed RWB who likes to get forward. Amorin should be all over the forwards to get them passing.

Beyond just Dorgu’s individual performance it was crystal clear that having non-inverted wingbacks helps the team. I actually think our shape looked alright when we had the ball in their half - certainly much better than under ETH.

Thought he did well all things considered. Must have been frustrating for him having Garnacho ignoring him every overlap.. put someone like Bruno in that LW position and I think he shines so much more.

The really infuriating thing about Garnacho ignoring those overlaps is that he was making his own job harder. When a defender knows he will always check inside he becomes easier to defend against. If he just slipped Dorgu in once or twice he would create hesitation that makes it easier for him to get some space for a shot when he ignored Dorgu. Yong and lernin.

Yeah that was frustrating to watch especially when the captain would rather take a 35 yard shot (that ended up being shit and deflected) than put you through near the opposition goal.

He looks good so far though.
I remember that, was so frustrating!

He was decent against Leicester and same can be said about yesterday. I like our shape better with him on the left and Dalot on right so that makes it better already.

Looked decent, would have been better if players picked out his runs more. I hope he doesn’t lose the bit of confidence he seems to have. He seems like a player that would work well in a back 4 or 5 which is good.

For a 20 year old playing his first full game in the league, I thought he did very well.

Absolutely agree with that statement. Especially, when considering everything that is going on around the club. He is a breath of fresh air into an environment that is oh so sorely lacking in it. Good luck to him and to Ruben Amorim going forward.

To be fair to Garnacho most of the time when he's on the ball the only part of the pitch he has any picture of is the ball and his feet, so he could well have had no idea that Dorgu had overlapped.

He's decent. He's not gonna be a world class left back or anything, but I think he'll probably be like a Dalot level (not the dalot with rockbottom confidence mind you). Big plus having a left back at left back. Not really the type of player to carry the ball properly unfortunately, he looks super awkward trying to run with it. But he's a quick passer and has a good eye for a forward pass and seems solid defensively. Not really a wing back, more a normal left back.
This is interesting because one of his is being a good ball carrier. I'm sure as he settles we'll see more of it.

Could be. Just so far he seemed very awkward at trying to run with the ball and hasn't taken anyone on, but has purely been pass and move. A few steps with the ball but the second any opponent has been close, he's passed it. That's not a huge problem necessarily, just saying what it seems like he's done.

His style of dribbling is a little awkward, more close control and strength than explosive based. I can see why the fear of giving the ball away can prevent him from expressing himself this early.

Looks very competent with and without the ball. So good to have a left footed player out there to provide width.

Looks good so far, but I can't even get excited by any promising early signs anymore. The amount of players I've seen steadily decline month by month after joining this club has scarred me for good.

Finally a player with the physical attributes needed to adapt to the league, definitely the kind of profile we need to keep seeing more of going forward. More like him and we might at least stop getting bullied by teams like Crystal Palace.

LWB

Dalot will never be a effective wingback.
Define effective? For now, without the option to buy anyone until summer, he is our best bet. Most of his errors come when he is on the left, given the weakness of that foot for him (not that he is perfect on the right) but if we think of his skillset from a very high level perspective, there is no reason he can't be a very capable RWB given his stamina, athleticism and also, though we haven't seen it as much, he would be a great runner for headers if Dorgus is crossing from the left (and vice versa) given their height. If our expectation is he becomes Dani Alves, we will be disappointed, but he can be a steady 6/10 player.

It’s the best we’ve got for now. Longer term I’m not convinced by Dalot
Agree. He’s average, but has good physical ability and is almost always available, so he will probably be part of the rebuild. I’d place RWB below striker, attacking midfielder and central midfielder in terms of problems to fix - maybe even below goalkeeper.

He’s serviceable, agree not a priority to replace him. He could be a valuable squad player in the future, or would be someone who actually has some resell value if someone comes in and takes his place.
