Gaming Paradox Interactive grand strategy games (Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings etc.)

Play with whoever you feel like, really. Seeing as you're still quite new to the game, I'd keep sticking with relatively easy choices though (bigger/"safe" nations), so you don't bang your head against the wall with a smaller one who's right next to an aggressive enemy (like Byzantium). Thankfully, you can do quite well with practically any country in the game as long as you secure some good alliances to keep your opponents away.

I've been going after achievements on Steam for a while, because it gives a sort of goal in each game. Maybe you could look at some of those. :)

World domination achieved! First proper try on ironman, but good fun - definitely requires some planning, especially with changes to truce timers and all that. Did it as the Ottomans (going orthodox and getting into the HRE) which is probably the easiest nation to do it as.

According to one of the devs it'll be impossible to do with the next DLC (unless you find and use some exploit, obviously), so time to get it done if you want to do it! ;)

@Wowi

I've decided to play as the Ottomans because I want to do hoodrat things at the moment and not mess around with colonies.

My advice for the ottomans would be to go east, your a conquering machine with reduced coring costs( Don't forget to core your province's when you conquer them). You get great missions to conquer territory and have a very nice starting ruler.

Super overwhelming so far. I'm trying to take over Albania and Constantinople.

Ottomans is a very strong start as well. Lots of territory, some cores that you can quickly get back and endless targets for attacks.

How many DLCs did you end up getting? :) I'd also suggest getting the Better UI mod from the workshop (assuming you run a relatively high resolution), which makes all the text bigger and also makes most of the screens (like diplomacy and peace) full height so you don't have to scroll as much.

None yet, first I have to figure out wtf I'm doing. Currently I have 22k sieging Albania who have 800 and it's not working. I am so bad.

Good plan. The older DLCs are almost always on sale somewhere (although some of the prices during this sale are particularly good), so there's no need to hurry with getting any of them really.

Sieges are much about luck and the speed is affected by the fort level, your general. blockade if it's a sea province and artillery once you unlock that - apart from that there's nothing you can do but sit back and wait for good dice rolls! Small tip: it is worth doing sieges with as few units as possible, as your army takes attrition each month.

Might fire up a new game on one of these. I love CK2 and loved EU3 - never quite got into EU4 to the same degree but worth a replay at some point.

I also love the CK2 mods you can get - there are some fantastic overhaul mods for Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings etc.

EU IV with both Art of war and common sense dlcs is a much more complete game across the board, they offer improvements in both warfare & peace offers while common sense allows you to build a tall empire!

Is Common Sense as great as Art of War?
There's still some stuff they need to iron out, but it's a very solid DLC. Maybe not quite as good as AoW, but quite close I think. Adds some great stuff, including more subject interaction which was desperately needed. I also really like that you now spend monarch points on improving the province rather than on buildings - I already complained at launch that buildings costing monarch points didn't make any sense (although it was obviously needed for balance).
Not sure how I feel about the fort system though. I like the idea, but often the zone of control just feels stupid and makes no sense. I was attacking Scotland and I could occupy Highlands, but I was unable to move to any of the adjacent islands, so I had to ferry my troops over.

Hmm.. interesting, thanks. I think I'll wait until it goes on sale though. Just saw that it's 15 euro which is a bit steep for me. Art of War (as well as most of the others) is currently available at 75% off for 5 euro or so if anyone's interested.

I think Hearts of Iron 2 is the game I´ve played more in my life , with the different mods, however I never found a modern time mod that convinced me or worked well . The problem is that these games require a huge amount of free time. I have not played to HOI 3 because it seemed too complicated to get used again to all the mechanics of the game . Someone has played ? better than 2 ? It seems that HOI 4 is on the way

You can still get 25% off on any game on GreenManGaming by using their voucher, which is probably as cheap as you'll get Common Sense for quite a while. Outside the Steam summer sale El Dorado hasn't been more than 20% off anywhere yet as far as I can see.

Yeah, HoI 4 is probably going to be released late this year or early 2016. You can find some alpha footage on youtube if you're interested from when they invited some youtubers over to play it. Never played the series myself, and it's a bit too late for me to pick it up now.

Thanks,I will have a look.Maybe I will try Europa Universalis as well

So, about that new zone of control system they added, this was apparently the shortest way to get to an adjacent province:

what is your opinion about the game? is focused in WW2? I was a big fan of Heart of Iron 2 and the different mods.

I think I am the exact same as you; I loved Hearts of Iron and HoI II and all the mods from II. In the rare moments that I get a lot of hours to waste, my go to is usually Doomsday. I have only played III once at a friends place, and I did not grow attached enough to pick up a copy of the game myself. From what I heard III is more complex, a little daunting at first, but overall more rewarding than II. Whatever, I'll stick with Doomsday

I used to play mod34,starting a couple of years before.Doomsday was from 1945 right?.Honestly I liked to play hard mode with cheats(never manpower),I loved a hard russian campaign but I hated to be thinking about the petrol. The problem of the game is that you need a lot of hours. From the beginning to Poland could take 5/6hours to prepare everything rightly and from january 1941 I was constantly stopping the time.I didn't play hoi3 because I thought that would be too complicate to get used to the routines. My dream is a game with the structure of hoi2,developing tanks, tactic planes, etc but based in modern world.I heard that there was a mod starting in 2000 but was not very popular.I just checked in google photos of hoi4 and saw a russian front extremely big and complicate

I love HOI3 but it was daunting. I've never even bothered trying to play as a 'big' nation because they have too much going on.

CK2 is still the best, but Stellaris looks incredible.

Conclave, the new DLC for CKII, is coming out on Feb 2. https://www.paradoxplaza.com/crusader-kings-2-conclave

It's billed as the big diplomacy/politics/intrigue update.
Conclave , the latest major expansion for Crusader Kings II, will give your vassals some bite to go along with your bark, as the council that governs your realm will now demand some say in how you rule. Powerful dukes, regardless of competence, will require a seat at the table, and those left on the outside will be more likely to plot against you.

Keep your council happy, and the mighty vassals will resist the pull of faction and civil war. Dismiss their interests, though, and you may find yourself trying to hold together a council at war with itself.

Balance councilor skill and power to keep your dynasty safe and strong. Ignore powerful underlings at your peril, or simply buy their loyalty with favors. Conclave makes the royal council a force unto itself.

Main features:

  • Councils can now vote on changes to realm laws – or you can try to limit their power and influence
  • Revised education system for royal children, with new traits and events designed for childhood
  • New diplomatic system that prioritizes marital alliances and non-aggression pacts, as well as the possibility of coalitions
  • Improved military combat model with a greater emphasis on morale, as well as new rules for mercenary companies
Crusader Kings II appreciates the subtlety of court intrigue. Conclave will give you new avenues to test that skill.

Anybody else psyched for this?

Ah feck, there goes my social life again.

They could have released about 6 different games with all the updates and DLC they've done for CK2.

Although obviously the full package comes to quite the cost, it's good to see the continued commitment to a single game far beyond the norm.

EDIT: Haven't played this for ages. Might do a payday splurge and take a few days off work.

There are some interesting bugs in Crusader Kings II at the moment, like an overpowered 'seducer' focus for characters resulting in ridiculous proportions of adultery and illegitimate children (if you turn on debug mode and look at secret data for characters, it's quite common now to get families where ALL the children aren't by the father).

Hopefully they look at that stuff along with Conclave.

Which is the best game? Would love to try one out.

Like Pedro says, though, if you want, you can start a epic game in CKII and convert your game to EU4 in 1453, which is pretty neat. Why choose?

Playing FM atm so can't be playing 3 games at once. Will start with EU4 then.

CK2 is absolutely amazing.

I'm beyond hyped for Stellaris at this point. It's looking like the 4x space game of my dreams and I want it now.

Here's a lets play from Paradox:

We'll have to play together when it comes out :)
