Paddy McNair

Id rather we play Youth and somebody who is specialized for the position then somebody out of position who will more likely make basic mistakes due to not understanding the positioning well.

I remember a lot of people saying Moyes and Fergie in his later years should have done that more, one match that sticks out is that Blackburn 3-2 loss at home when we played Fabio? and park as CMs and it was terrible.

Didnt Jones make his debut for Blackburn and pretty much nullified Drogba on that day?

Agreed.

Thought Thorpe deserved the spot more but good luck to Paddy. Being relatively new to CB and how he performed alongside Charni last season I think he has great potential. Really good on the ball which I presume van Gaal will like. Hoping he has a good match.

Have to admire van Gaal's trust in the youth, don't think Ferguson would have played McNair today.

So many people asking who is Paddy McNair. Am I the only one who finds it weird that people can support a club but have never heard of the reserve players. I know everyone may not be able to watch the reserves or anything but you'd think they'd at least heard of them. I don't know maybe that is just me but I have heard of most reserve players for all the top teams in the PL let alone for the club I support.

I agree, I find it hard that people don't give the youth set up the time it deserves but I guess for a lot of people it's about the big names and instant results.

Don't mean to be pessimistic but he'll be up against Enner Valencia and Sakho, both very physical and also players who will work their socks off and with Rojo's aerial ability leaving a lot to be desired. I'm expecting a goal fest and the only way we're going to beat them is by out-scoring them!

In case we concede a lot of goals, I hope people don't write off McNair, he's really getting a baptism by fire today

I wonder if he'll be the second coming or a useless piece of shit in two hours' time. Knowing this place, he won't be anything in between.

I try to follow the youth as much as I can, but McNair being ahead of Thorpe, to be thrust into the team, is a shock for me.

I hope it goes well for him.

I too am rather surprised, based on their respective performances I'd say they both look like talented prospects but felt sure Thorpe was first in line. I'm actually pretty shocked either of them are out there today, huge day for the kid. Perhaps Paddy showed something a little more special in training.

he's done well so far, won headers, composed on the ball had two surging runs through midfield. Right now I know just one thing and that he has a better future than Wooton:-)

Has done well, won the ball in the air a few times and stood up to his man when he needed to

Could move the ball with a little more intent but doing well. Doing his job as good as could be asked of him.

Arguably he's show more composure than Evans and Smalling this year. Much like Blackett, McNair looks much less panicked with the ball at his feet than some of our senior defenders. He could be shortening some careers out there right now.

Has done well but his passing today is bit off than his usual standard.Totally understandable though.

Lets wait till the game is up! One mistake and you'll have people writing off his United career.

I know, we had people writing off Rafael's career last week. However, fortunately Van Gaal seems to see more than just what goes wrong.

He made 13 clearances out of his box, which is the most on the pitch. More than Rojo's 10.

He also made that fantastic headed clearance.

On the other side, he gave the ball away a bit too often with his passing as most young defenders do

Did exactly what his manager would have selected him over Thorpe for, he dealt with West Ham's direct long balls well

Did well today, really tough circumstances.

One great header, but I thought he looked very uncertain and made a handful of small mistakes. Was the goal from the corner he gave from clearing the ball back instead of to the side?
