I'd keep him around and 2k a weeks is still over 100k quid... I'd take that!

I think a player like him, a hard tackler, would be very nervous his first few games to toss himself into a full tackle. Maybe be a bit of a mental battle from here out..

Making him leave is throwing him on the scrapheap...

Do you really believe that after a show of faith such as a contract offer when he hasn't played in 2 years he would request 90K a week?

This is why I was asking if anyone knew exactly the ratio was on a pay as you play deal. We just can't take any more chances on Curly :( There is no blame or fault anywhere but £30 million is a hell of a lot of cash. What concerns me more though is the squad/team place we keep open for him. We are not a semi-retirement home for ex-international footballers (apart from the other Owen of course). We need to try somehow to replace him in the summer and not stumble into another season in the blind faith of his medical team.

But look at him. How can you NOT want to keep a beautiful player like this? Even when a stupid beanie covers all the curly thing, he still oozes sexiness!

Sign him on a 1 year deal with 10k a week and 40k appearance fee. He hasn't given up and I'm sure would want to stay rather than battle elsewhere.

Throwing him on to the scrap heap? You really want to use that term? We've paid him 10s of millions whilst he's not contributed a single thing to us (yes it wasn't his fault) in any other profession he'd have been sacked. He now has more than enough money to be set for life even if he were to stop playing tomorrow. If he can prove his fitness on trial then he'll find another club willing to give him a pay as you play contract if we don't, maybe 20k a week? Poor Owen he's going to be earning the same wage your average man does in a year in just a week, we're really throwing him on to the scrap heap. If that fails and he can always become a pundit.

Using the phrase you used is actually offensive to people who have genuinely been thrown into the scrap heap in their life time. Get a grip.

If he has morals, he should give most of his wages back to the club.

Great to have him back, if stays injury free he could help us in the title run in.

Also, he is not too bad at taking corners and free kicks, an area we need to improve on.

My take has been that the last couple of years SAF through what has been discussed with the medical staff and Hargo's doctors has believed that Hargo woudl be available in some shape or form at least for a decent period of games during the season but, it hasn't happened. I think that has been one of the primary reasons we have not bought another CM of his mold. Fletcher has not had a suitable back up to his harrying/closing down/ high energy type because of this.

I don't want to give up on Hargreaves because we've spent 2 years trying to get him fit and it would be a bloody shame if after all this he is finally fit to play 15-20 games and he goes and does it for someone else. However, if keeping him means we don't get a suitable backup for Fletcher or at least another strong CM that can give us that intensity/pressure that Hargo would give, then I wouldn't want to extend him a pay as you play contract.

Lets just hope he gets to play a few games this season for us and in such a way that he contributes to us winning trophies.

Hes dead. Ive given up on him. Even if he some hows manages to stay fit for more than 5 minutes (literally), he wont perform at the same level he did the season we won the CL :(

He was pretty crap in the season we won the champions league

Delighted for him. It must have been a bloody hard two years. Money doesn't help you through the pain of surgery and rehab or shattered dreams (he has never struck me or anybody that's paid an iota of attention to him as the money grabbing type). He fought to come to this club and although he hasn't had many appearances he gave us some wonderful moments.

He was mostly rubbish in centre midfield save a few games.

Did fine when moved to the right in a few games. Very good in the Champions League Final. A few vital goals especially the one against Arsenal.

Yeh, a mixed bag. Made a decent enough contribution, but he seems to have somehow become a better player with injury.

Yeah pretty much the way I recall it. He had a tendency to run around with the ball, generally getting nowhere, instead of just releasing it quickly. Better suited to a wide role.

Although I do remember him having a decent run when he partnered Anderson for a few games before Christmas.

He can make a decent contribution from the right wing as well as from defensive midfield. For example, if healthy, he would have started the FA cup match against Arsenal. I'm personally excited about the news that he may be available for the run-in. Hopefully his level will not have dropped too sharply. If his body is ok, he won't have forgotten how to play football.

If he can play consistently, he may still be offered a cheap pay as you play deal, probably much cheaper than Michael Owen's. The club will want to recoup some of their original investment, and I think Hargreaves will feel like he owes something to the club.

In theory that partnership is

He must feel like he has something to prove to everyone

I will never forget Hargreaves+Ando at The Emirates and Anfield and Hargreaves vs Roma, Arsenal and Chelsea at the end.

Those 5 games were good enough for me

A bit of a strange one, but I am genuinely gutted for him.

The last few years must have been hell for him - he showed promise in his first season, and seemed genuinely pleased to have signed for us after we'd courted the idea for a while.

I cannot see him here after this year, unless he gets a pay-as-you-play deal. But even then, i'd be surprised if he'd be offered a new deal. That's got to leave him in a very precarious position, as I can't see many clubs wanting to take him on.

Yeah, that's about right. Although the improvement in form towards the end of the season might have been about an improvement in fitness and generally settling in at the club, rather than just a positional change.

That's the kindest explanation anyway. Although it would also imply that even if he does play again this season he won't be pulling up any trees.

I agree with Sultan - people thinking he could be our central midfield saviour are wide of the mark.

He's a brilliant option to have for the right side in big games if we can to have 4-4-2 though.
