I feel sorry for the bloke and it's not his fault but he doesn't sound anywhere near mentally ready to force his way into the team (for England or United).

I think he's being honest, I doubt he'll play the full 90 minutes tonight, not after so long out, so if he can get between 60-75 minutes will be significant progress. Also just playing after so long he's going to be like an excited kid chasing the ball around. He's also being sensible in accepting if he get's any problems to come off as fast as he can, and not cause any further damage.

I said eariler on in this thread that the World Cup can be used as an incentive for him, to really work at his fitness and mental strength. Him going would aid United next year, as it's potentially more games for him to get fitter and stronger. Tonight should be an interesting marker point in where Hargreaves will go for the rest of the season, one I think we would all want is to see him helping out the first team.

cant wait for this. lets hope its not one huge disappointment again. good luck to the lad.

Relax he will be fine.. 30-60 mins under his belt today and will play atleast 1 1st team match by the end of the season..

feck England, get yourself fit and ready for us please Owen.

Whilst normally I'd agree and most would on here. What he needs are matches, not only to improve his match fitness and match sharpness. Though I doubt he'd play in the world cup, if selected. If he was he'd only be building up his stamina, his match strength etc which would benefit United next season.

It's all very doubtful in terms of even playing for United this season, but if he does enough to get a few games, the WC could aid his rehabilitation. England are short of midfield and defensive cover on the right hand side, and we know Hargreaves can play both roles, he has a chance of selection if he can prove his form and fitness.

Today might be the day but i'll believe it when i see it.

I suppose the thing that will irate fans the most is that a large proportion have been behind him through out this injury. I know its a WC year but if your coming back from an 18month lay off the WC squad shouldn't be at the forefront of your mind. But I suppose he knows if he is fit he will go.

Shouldn't "irate" anyone really. The press have just asked him about the WC and he has replied that's all. They probably didn't bother asking him about United.

Suspect though it may have been a combination of things that have spurred him on now, one thing being SAF and another being Capello. If he was frightened of playing a game in case the pain returned then anything that spurs him on is surely a help.

Sure how could he be? It's impossible. Anyway, I don't give a feck about England, I'd rather he was right for us for the start of next season!

Though it may sound harsh, if we're going to stuck with another Ledley King-one game a week etc-then we're better off without. He needs to be able to play week-in, week-out. It wouldn't be possible to carry three players in a midfield who need constant resting (Giggs, Scholes and Hargreaves).

It's true, what he needs is to be thinking about is getting back to fitness and playing games. However, having something like the WC squad to aim for might provide a further incentive for him, which after playing tonight (should I really of said that or have I just cursed him again?) and could be a carrot for him to push forward. Of course some would say he'll end up being injured in SA, but that can be said for anyone and it would be most unfortunate on Hargreaves if he was. However, we need to see how he plays first of all, to see be able to see how far away from 1st team football let alone international football.

Can't remember which pro said it, but it was someone who has experienced the same procedure, he said that as soon as you play a real football match you know whether the operation has been a success. That is, they already know whether the operation went okay, but whether it's actually been a good solution to the problem is still to be determined.

Actual exclusive interview with Owen, from the Telegraph (so a chance it might be real). Explains why he ended up being injured in the first place (came back too quickly from a broken leg) and how he is not frightened of a big tackle but its about manageing his training.

Read the whole thing here, cetainly worth a look and goes towards answering his detractors:

hope he will come thru this, really a damn good player that will add strength to our squad for title run in, and he can score alot from free kicks which we are lacking at the moment.

Nice article there Colin - thanks.

I really do think people should stop using The Sun and The Mail as their sources. There are plenty of quality publications out there, particularly The Telegraph and The Times.

They also make mistakes or have unusual or biased comment, but they are much less likely to make up sensational stories to sell the paper.

Taking into account how often we're playing 433/451 (depending on whether you're a glass half full or half empty kind of guy) then a fit Hargreaves would be a huge boost. Realistically I think the best we can hope for is that he'll be fully involved in pre-season ready for next year.

Owen Hargeaves is set for another cruel stint on the sidelines after suffering a further setback in the recovery from his troublesome knee injury. Hargreaves was in the last throes of stepping up his comeback from the injury that has seen him out of action for the past 18 months in the hope of readying himself for United’s title run in, and latterly, participation in England’s World Cup squad in South Africa. He was pencilled in for a start for the reserves tonight against Burnley. Yet in a cruel twist of fate for the once much sought after midfield dynamo, Hargreaves faces further time on the treatment table at Manchester United after twisting awkwardly whilst climbing down off of it. A visible irate Alex Ferguson was apoplectic during a hastily arranged press conference this afternoon.

“you couldnea make it oop, the soft curly headed bastard has only gon and *** himself a mischief whilst getting doon aff tha table. he’ll be back in three weeks :mad::mad:

Owen Hargreaves was equally upset at the latest in a long line of setbacks during his long, gruelling recovery, “I’m probably going to be oot for aboot three weeks now eh?”

Manchester United and England fans will be praying for a swift return to fitness for the Canadian born star, they will be hoping he can add some much needed bit and flexibility to their teams during the important up and coming games. Ferguson’s patience with the much maligned runner-abouter seems to be running thin with the threat of a “shotgun horse style put down” being lined up alongside a replacement if Hargreaves doesn’t make a full comeback shortly.
