It's true. I remember they broke down his scoring distribution and a huge majority are inside the box with the right foot. In fact until this season, Rooney had only scored 5 with his head his entire career. Obviously this year he has something like 7-8 so that number has gone into the double digits.
But his long range shooting which was quite good in his teens has now all but gone. I don't expect him to ever hit the target with his freekicks much less from a long range strike. It's an aspect of the game that he needs to improve. (especially when you consider just how lethal Ronaldo was from that range, and how good Messi has proved to be).
If Rooney can develop a long range shot equal to those two he could very easily crack 40 odd goals in a season.
