Barca are a bunch of clowns  Talk about burning money from the biggest transfer ever. Paulinho first, Dembelé as the world's second most expensive player :wenger:

Dembele has the potential to be one of the best players in the world. How is that burning money? He's a perfect replacement for Neymar, the most perfect in fact.

It is IMHO, they needed better midfielders first. Paulinho is a huge gamble for a guy coming from China. Dembelé is all potential at the moment, nowhere near the level Neymar was at when they bought him from Santos and for that kinda money, you need sure things. Imagine if Dembelé is a massive failure, which isn't impossible tbh. Stranger things have happened.

Dembélé is not "all potential". He has performed consistently for BVB. He will not be a massive failure. Or at least him being a massive failure is as unlikely as it can possibly be with football transfers.

The bar will be set with that transfer fee and the expectation will be higher. You're probably right, he won't fail big time but he might underwhelm them. Barca needs a player that hits the ground running. Interesting times ahead.

He loses the ball a ton(product of him being a very unpredictable player) I wonder how the fans at the Camp Nou will take it considering the type of Football they are known for.

Letting the transfer fee "set the bar" always tends to be a stupid approach. Because what does that mean?
It is a lot of money, but then I think Dembélé is the best young attacker Barca could have possibly bought.

It's a stupid approach but it's how it's always been like that or every big transfer to date. It's not his fault that Barca got fleeced but c'est comme ca.

In this case, I could imagine fans might understand that the fee is to a part so inflated due to circumstances. Also, Dembélé was always going to go for crazy money. He is spectacular.

''LOL' would be better... just saying.

In terms of the deal, outrageous sum of money for such a young unproven player. Could have picked him up for less than 100m if they bought him before they lost Neymar had they acted as soon as they knew PSG were going to activate the clause.

Fans in general will I think, they're a lot less stupid (unless completely biased) than the general media I feel. Big pressure on Dembélé anyway, I hope he makes it and turns into a world class player.

They would not have Dortmund did not want to sell this summer. Dembele's strike forced their hand.

He's an incredible prospect, only second to Mbappe of the French generation coming through imo. That being said, that's all he is now, a prospect. Still very raw from whenever I've seen him. This transfer could go either way imo

A lot of the people saying he can't flop I assume had odegaard impacting the Madrid first team and renato sanchez as ballon d'or

In his two seasons of senior Football he was one of the best players in Ligue 1 his first season and one of the best players in the Bundesliga in his second season.

For me, Dembele is the worst business of any club during the transfer window. Next to it, 200m for Neymar is a much more sensible move, as Neymar is a proven superstar who has heavyweight marketing value. The only reason Barca have sanctioned the move at these prices is because the board fears getting voted out by their fans. But it is a high risk venture, and they could easily end up with a Memphis Depay in their hands.

No way. Dembele is not going to end up like Depay IMO.

For starters, those saying he can't flop should define what "flopping" would mean. At the price Barca has paid, he needs to become top 2 or top 3 in his position to justify the fee paid for him.

he won't make the impact his fee demands for several more years, if he ever does.

He's better than Mbappe.

Maybe not. But if you look at it as a probability, perhaps he has:

  • 20 % to end us as Depay
  • 20% to be like Ashley Young
  • 30% to end up like Nani
  • 18% to be a Rivery
  • 10% to be a Neymar
  • 2% to be a Cristiano Ronaldo

This is why it's much much better to pay 200m for Neymar than 100m for Dembele. He is just way to young and unproven. To develop to CR7 level, he needs to have a good amount of talent, but most importantly, must also develop the footballing intelligence AND must have the correct mentality and discipline to work very hard.

lol what a ridiculous post

£97m on Dembele, one of the best young talents in the world, or £50m on Walker. Kyle Walker. Kyle fecking Walker.

Dembele is already better than Nani ever was and I say this as someone who loves Nani.

He really is not that far off from that.

Mario Gotze was already top 2 or 3 in his position when he moved to Bayern. What has become of him?
There are just so many examples of young players with great potential who never made it all the way.

This kid is truly special. Honestly, the closest thing to Messi I've seen. If he was just a bit more clinical infront of goal, oh boy...

If Pogba, Martial, Dembele and Mbappe develop as expected France will dominate world football like Spain did for a while.
Didier Deschamps is an average coach. France are unlikely to win anything with him.
Argentina have Higuaín, Aguero, Di Maria and Dybala which are better than what France have anyway but again their coaches have always been awful.

He's being incredibly overrated on here and the fee paid is compounding that perception. Barca are desperate and are being hemmed into a deal they would never conduct - at the fees quoted- under circumstances conducive to a more arms length transaction.

The chances of this going wrong are substantial enough on the scale to be worried as a Barcelona board member. There's all kinds of variables independent of "talent" (which is highly raw) sufficiently precarious enough to lend credence to the opinion, it can flop spectacularly.

Well, City are just using a shotgun approach - pay £50m for any defender or fullback. Specially if it weakens an opponent. But that is a completely different topic for another thread.
