Our worst signings XI

Onanna
Darmain Blanc Bailey Telles

Obertan Djemba x2 Schneiderlin Bebe

Bellion Sanchez

Surely Schweinsteiger has to be considered , basically crocked , and just wanted a final payday.

He was awful. He made the 1999 United side look like the 2025 United side.
Yeah. I remember he had 1 or two bad matches before being shipped. Might have been a case of not suitable to a big club but his career after United wasn’t too bad.

This is considering the price, conditions and performances:

Taibi (4,5M)
Wan Bissaka (55M) Maguire (85M) Rojo (20M) Telles (15M)
Schneiderlin (30M) Mount (60M) Van de Beek (40M)
Antony (85M) Sancho (72M)
Hojlund (72M)

Plenty more to choose from but I'd say thats the money worse spent in our history and many of them would definitely make the overall football worst signings XI

Add Onana there for 40m, and we've got ourselves almost 600m of signings on the pitch with feck all to show for it. Marvelous, really.

Yeah I loved Schweinsteiger as a player before United but he showed as much contempt for the club as any of our big signings, didn't he live in Monaco and would travel over for the games? Or something along those lines. And there were reports of him not really trying in training and not really being committed at all while picking up a big wage.

GK Bosnich (Paul Scholes said he could not kick a football if his life depended on it)
RB Wan-Bissaka (Mostly because of the money spend on him )
CB William Prunier (Maybe the worst player of all time, cheap though)
CB Maguire (Ok at moments but, but we thought we bought Van Dijk quality. Phil Jones is reserve.)
LB Malacia (How on earth does he end up here)
MF Fellaini (Only Moyes could see that one)
MF Pogba (How can you let a young boy leave on free buy him again for £89m and let him leave for free once more )
MF Donny (Surprised it didn't worked out)
FW Antony (Comes in second)
CF Højlund (Probably the worst signing of all time money and talent considered. Don't think Atalanta has stopped laughing) And I am even Danish :-)
FW Sanchez (Could also be Sancho)

Manager: Moyes (but Amorim could easily end up and take first place)

Aye the lack of Schweinsteiger mentions is interesting. Great player, terrible for us.

Post-Fergie, I'd go with:

Onana
Darmian Bailly Rojo Telles
Schneiderlin Schweinsteiger Van De Beek
Mount Sanchez Sancho

Antony has been shite but he's still done more than those three forward players.

Forgot we even signed Zaha!

AWB ? He was a decent player and played a lot of games.

My recent years biggest flops.

Anthony worst ever signing due to cost and return. Biggest flop in recent history.
Onana
Mount aka sicknote.
Hojlund - no where near united quality
Zirkzee - as above.
DVB looked decent but soon ruined.
Casamiro - Over paid for some one with a max of 2 decent year left in him.
Sancho
Sanchez
Pogba the return.

Forgot we even signed Zaha!

I went to a Southampton v Crystal Palace game with family on Boxing Day a few years ago, a season Southampton were promoted.

What about this upcoming bloke Zaha I've heard of, I said to myself. No sign of anything spectacular. I never even worked out which one he was.

From the time I've watched us play.

Taibi
Prunier-Lindelof-Buttner
Obertan-Kleberson-VDB-Antony
Bebe-Manucho-Sanchez

(Dis)Honorable mentions:
Bosnich
Blanc
Djemba Djemba
Falcao
Sancho
Zaha
Fangzhuo

Probably some others I'm forgetting

Maybe is better to have two teams ..one during Fergie and another one post Fergie..and compare with current team

£50m and all he could do was time a slide tackle well. Absolutely horrendous signing.

Casemiro ahead of the likes of Djemba Djemba, Kleberson?
There's a difference between worst player and worst signing. The former is judged by talent and attitude. In that case I believe that one of the worst players I've ever seen in a United's shirt was the legend himself Paddy 'own goal' Mcnair also known as Paddy McFail. For the latter the most important metric is fee + salary vs performance.

Casemiro moved to United for 70m and he signed a 4 year contract on 18.5m per year. 144m in total is one hell of a sum for someone who gave us just 1 decent season

Taking everything in to account, the below team is hard to beat for how bad it was compared to the finances involved.

-----------------------------------------Bosnich------------------------------------------
AWB------------------------Bailly-----------------Maguire---------------Rojo
--------------------------DVB----------------------------Schneiderlin------------------------
Anthony-----------------------------Pogba----------------------------------Bebe
------------------------------------------Zirkzee------------------------------------------------

Actually feel a bit mean putting Maguire in as he's a decent defender, but 80Million was madness.

Honorable mentions to Sanchez, Barthez, MKhitaryan, Falcao, Kleberson and Obertan.

Falcao is maybe the worst player I've ever seen live but I think he was a loan so we didn't lose too much by singing him.

Edit - Just remembered Lindelof. He possibly claims a starting 11 spot. 100% on the bench at least.

If we go by overall damage they did to the club, and not "worst players", I'd go with...

GK : Onana - can only really be one, since the other two we have paid reasonable money for (Schmeichel and DDG) both worked out overall. Was tempted to go left-field and put DDG for that ridiculous final contract but he did too much good overall.

RB : Darmian - startlingly mediocre

LB : Malacia - being a little bit harsh here, there's a few candidates...but the fact he's been unavailable for 18-months swings it for me.

CB - Maguire - I like Maguire, but the £80m we forked out + the wages has hurt us and tied us to a player who really wants to play in a three / mid-low block at a time when we were trying to play high / man for man.

CB : Varane - Cost £42m, always injured, on the decline. Close between him and Bailly, who was also always inured but "only" cost £30m.

CM : Pogba - Crazy fee, crazy money, seemingly a bad influence, never justified any of it on a regular basis.

CM : Casemiro - £60m + £350K per week for about 30 good games, now we can't shift him

AMR : Antony - not his fault, not as bad as he's made out and tries hard...but wow, what a shocker of a transfer

AML : Martial - £60m paid, massive salary, minimal effort, always injured, left on a free

AMC - Mount - £60m, massive salary, always injured

ST - Ronaldo - totally unnecessary signing based on sentiment, derailed OGS' plans and undermined certain individuals

Honourable mention to Sanchez, who was appalling and was on £500K p/w. Another honourable mention to Schweinsteiger who was a likeable guy but Woodward's quote about how teams would fear him sums up how out of touch we were at the time.

Left out AdM, Schneiderlin and Lukaku as we recouped most of their fees

Forgot about DvdB. That sums up his time at United really...IF Mount ever gets fit, case to be made to eventually swap those two

People forget some crazy Fergie era transfers:
1. Djemba Djemba
2. Kleberson
3. Liam Miller
4. Gabriel Obertan
5. Manucho
6. Veron
7. Owen Hargreaves
8. Barthez
9. Bebe
10. Nick Powell
11. David Bellion
etc

I think the difference is we either didn't pay crazy transfer fees & wages on these players or if we did, we got rid of them quickly for a decent sale price. I think the exception here is probably Hargreaves but even he helped us to win the CL in that one year he was only half crocked.

Now compare that to post Fergie era:
1. DVB
2. Sancho
3. Maguire
4. Telles
5. Pogba
6. Martial
7. Schneiderlin
8. Falcao
9. Di Maria
10. Bailly
11. Telles
12. Lindelof
13. Schweinsteiger
14. Fellaini
15. Lukaku
16. Martial
17. Mount
18. Antony
19. AWB
20. Onana
21. Casemiro
22. Sanchez

I'm sure most players we've purchased belong here.
