Our worst signings XI

We've had worse signings than Buttner, AWB and Anthony in those positions. Onana should be in over Taibi also. He's basically Taibi if we decided to keep him playing with us for 18 months rather than immediately putting in the bin.
Absolutely correct, how people keep defending him on here is beyond me

Happy to see some Casemiro mentions.

Some of the fanbase has stopped deluding themselves into thinking he was our best central midfielder since Carrick.

Awful signing, awful player bar the odd nice pass or goal here and there. As I said before he joined us, people underestimated how much Modric, Kroos, Isco, Kovacic, etc, carried him in possession, and we didn't have the players to carry him so it was never going to work.

I'll caveat this with players who have roughly 50 apperances for Manchester United and I've actually seen play (so basically PL era). I think around that many games means the player got a fair crack at it.

GK - Roy Carroll

LB - Alex Telles
CB - Marcos Rojo
CB - Victor Lindelof
RB - Matteo Darmian

CM - Donny Van De Beek
CM - Morgan Schniederlin
CM - Darron Gibson

LW - Jadon Sancho
CF - Alexis Sanchez (only 45 apps but I think that's a fair inclusion - otherwise it would have to be Hojlund)
RW - Antony

Honourable shoutout to Radamel Falcao who only made 30 appearances, but god he was shit.

Bit harsh to call Gibson a terrible signing

Honestly, I thought it was Worst XI - but we probably signed him from an Irish club at some point!

Struggling to think of a player with 50 games who could fill in otherwise - and I refuse include Fellaini.

Is it worst according to the price vs value or just overall worst in terms of ability? As someone like VDB was awful generally speaking but pound for pound, Antony was far worse...

In PL era.... Also went for actual positions, not full backs across back four like others

Taibi

De Laet Linderlof Higginbotham (might be harsh, he's a top bloke) Telles

Bellion Fellaini Powell Memphis

Dong Bebe

Subs: Carroll, Healy, Manucho, Diouf, James, VDB, Sancho, Malacia, Mount

Lets have a bit of fun, make your lineup of our worst signings.

Here is mine

Taibi
Darmian Wan Bisakka Telles Buttner
Antony DVB Schniederlin Sanchez
Weghorst Bebe
This is a striking partnership that could legitimately score 0 goals between them in an entire season

GK Onana (both rubbish and price tag)
RB Wan-Bissaka (price tag)
CB Ian Ure (rubbish)
CB Maguire (price tag)
LB Heinze (price tag)
MF Fellaini (rubbish, price tag and didn't look right in a utd shirt)
MF Pogba (price tag)
MF Casemiro (price tag)
FW Antony (the worst of them all)
CF Höjlund (rubbish and price tag)
FW Sancho (price tag)

kinda reads like a value for money worst XI

My starting XI and subs (no loan deals allowed)

Onana
Telles
Jones
Rojo
Darmian
Sancho
Pogba
VDB
Djemba X2
Antony (c)
Zirkzee

Subs:
Sanchez
Maguire
Bosnich
Kleberson
Memphis Depay
Casemiro

I don’t think it’s fair to put Taibi on that list, although I can understand why some of you do it. He was an emergency signing when Mark “Terrible professional” Bosnich was injured, and he only played 4 games before he wanted to go home because of some family issue. In those 4 games he was MOTM in two of them, pretty good for a GK who didn’t speak a word in english. Because he stayed for such a short time, he is only remembered for his howler from Le Tissier. Terrible mistake but it is not the worst we’ve seen. Even Schmeichel had an even worse howler against Le Tissier the season before.

This is (according to transfermarkt) what 645 million Euros can buy you.

Back in those days, Taibi made 1 howler and was universally mocked even until now. Imagine being Onana back then.

As an outsider I dont get the Schneiderlin hate. He seemed like a reasonable transfer you gave him a season to work out, and you got most of your money back.

Had to laugh hard when I saw that there's no free space for banger signings like Di María, Memphis, Sánchez, Schneiderlin, Fred and Hojlund. Pogba, Martial, Wan-Bissaka and Lukaku not even to be considered because I can at least remember a couple of good performances.

This is considering the price, conditions and performances:

Taibi (4,5M)
Wan Bissaka (55M) Maguire (85M) Rojo (20M) Telles (15M)
Schneiderlin (30M) Mount (60M) Van de Beek (40M)
Antony (85M) Sancho (72M)
Hojlund (72M)

Plenty more to choose from but I'd say thats the money worse spent in our history and many of them would definitely make the overall football worst signings XI

Looking at the transfer spend and return on investment.

Onana

AWB
Maguire
Martinez
Shaw

Scheiderlin
Pogba
Mount

Sanchez
Hojlund
Anthony

Our worst signings have been mainly midfielders and attackers, so they don't fit neatly into a team formation.
Bosnich
Hargreaves, Djemba Djemba, Kleberson
Antony, Sancho, Van de Beek, Di Maria
Sanchez, Brazil, Davenport

Onana
Wan-Bissaka Maguire Bailly/Lindelof Telles
Sancho Pogba Veron Antony
Sanchez Memphis

Considering fee and output from these players, this is easily our worst signing XI.
Veron and Pogba are a bit controversial for me, especially Pogba.

In 2018/19 he was outstanding, plenty of goals and assists, and got in the PL team of the year iirc.

Not to say either were particularly amazing overall, but there's been plenty worse, even taking into account the outlay. You could see how with a bit of luck they might actually have become great players at the club.

No one said Zaha yet? I was so hoping that he would be good for us. Damn Moyes daughter.

On the goalscoring front we've been dire:
Ted MacDougall
Alan Brazil
Gary Birtles
Antony Martial
Memphis Depay
Romelu Lukaku
Rasmus Höjlund
Joshua Zirkzee

To name a few

Carroll
Bailly. Malacia Telles
Obertan Kleberson Van de Beek
Zirkzee. Kagawa. Antony
Alexis

Subs bench:
Lukaku, Gibson, Miller, Büttner, Onana, Depay

I don’t care about formation, it wouldn’t make a difference if they were all played in their normal positions.

He cost 12m and was stellar at Dortmund so the transfer made sense.

He also outperformed Messi for about an hour against Norwich City :p Scored a hat trick.

He also won the PL with United.
