Our window isn’t the great success many claim

I expected these knee jerk reaction posts after a bad first game, but I am sort of shocked at the sheer panic that seems to have gripped our fans after a (admittedly underserved) win. People need to calm the F down and worry about team trends…not a shaky first win.

We’ve bought 3 players.

Onana - big upgrade on De Gea.
Mount - will need to settle in but he’s surely an improvement on McFred.
Hojlund - Is he going to be any better than Wout? Yes I think he is.

We should have a better XI than last year when everyone is fit, settled and that equates to a good window.
Only the third one is for sure, everything else is up for debate.

Then he should be a squad player. He does not have the quality of a player to be a starter at a club in the size of Manchester united if we aspire to win the league.

But he is good enough to be a starter for a team that wins the Champions League?

Currently our transfers look like a side step rather than any sort of improvement. It was a similar story of the goalkeeper having to save our skin while everyone ahead of him stood about looking like clowns.

But he is good enough to be a starter for a team that wins the Champions League?
There is more luck factor in the CL, many teams suffering in the league won the CL. I said premiere league specifically because it requires top performances in at least 80% of your games.

Rice is a #6, though. It would've been a huge luxury to buy a 100m rival for Casemiro, when we urgently needed a new GK and #8.

Also, you gotta realize that Onana was one of the few technical goalkeepers available on the market that can come in and straight away take the starting goalkeeper position at a huge club like United. The other candidates were probably Diogo Costa, David Raya or Unai Simón. I'm probably forgetting 1-2 players but there aren't many options and Onana was pretty much the perfect fit at the perfect time. Also the least risky one.

Mount really isn't an 8 either, though, so if we're going to be playing a guy out of position anyway, I'd rather it be Rice than Mount.

Also, I may be out of my element here, and if so please let me know, but I feel like a double-pivot with Casemiro and Rice would work better than what we're currently doing.

Also, the only reason I mentioned Rice is because he's a player who did move this summer. We all know that what really needed to be done if the club were dead serious about getting to the next level was to hand Barca a blank check for De Jong.

He didn't want to come here so that wasn't an option.

But I refuse to believe that he's the only midfielder in the world who can significantly improve our passing and ball retention.

Window is decent, nothing spectacular. There are other things that should worry people.

We still need people in midfield, still need competition for Bruno and Rashy(hopefully Garnacho is the one but looks very raw at the moment), still need a RCB that can stay fit for more than 10 days, still need a RB.

By some sheer fecking luck maybe Sancho and Antony wake the feck up and Mount kicks on, otherwise this window is just decent.

If we were an ambitious club we would have signed Kane and Caicedo, or at least one of them, but we scrimped because the Glazers are sticking around like a bad smell and have stretched our finances thin.
I would like to hope that Ten Hag wanted Caicedo because we saw media briefs on the club being interested, and we just couldn’t afford him, but unless Mount improves big time, questions have to be asked on that transfer.
I will be happier if we can get Amrabat because he is a proper midfielder who gets on the ball and passes a lot and can defend a bit, but yeah the window has been underwhelming so far.
Our biggest hope for this season should be seeing the Glazers gone.

Pretty much this.

To add, Mount is such an odd deal to do. I truly hope he does well but in the face of it, he is exactly the type of midfielder we didn't need.

Kane will always be the one that got away. If we could have saved the money buying Onana and Hojlund and put it towards a full on assault for Kane, we would have looked a much stronger team.

Even if we perform like we did last night, teams would always have to be wary of the fact Harry Kane is on the pitch.

With that said, it's done now and Onana did well on his debut while Hojlund hasn't had his chance yet, so can't criticise them for something that never happened.

Who's calling it a success? Utter delusion. Woodward would have been ridiculed for spending over 100m on Mount and Hojlund. Onana is a decent signing but that's it.

Once again we've spent loads of money and have little to show for it. The Qataris need to come in and overhaul our recruitment department as soon as they get here.

Struck me watching that ‘ludicrous display’ last night that after the substitutes with the exception of Onana we were playing with last seasons team.
I have been thinking about it since and we haven’t actually improved the squad so far.
Onana will modernise our play, and our style will change and hopefully be more entertaining - but is he a better keeper than DDG?
Mount is decent but he’s a cog in the machine not a stand out player.
We’ll have to wait and see how Hojlund affects the team, but all in all we’ve spent hundreds of millions with very little improvement to show for it.
In terms of sales the only sale of note is Fred. Players like Hendo looked all but done before the window opened, and we’ve managed to stuff it up. All the others have been fringe and reserve players.
I’ve seen plenty of comments saying this has been a good window but I’m not so sure. I don’t see a great deal of progression, hopefully this can change before September, but it’s not looking hopeful at the moment.

Harsh to judge Mount this early. Onana had been brought in for a change of style but remember these players are used to DDG, give it time. Hojilund hasn’t played yet. What did you expect during the Transfer window. A whole new squad?

Hojlund didnt even kick a ball, just give the team some time and eth the benefit of the doubt as his buys until now were all quite successfull

We had 4 crucial signings to make this window and we've only made 2 thus far.

GK - Onana
ST - Hojlund
Eriksen Successor - No
Casemiro backup/understudy - No

We didn't need Mount and have yet wasted a large chunk of our summer budget on him. I think this is on the manager and he's been very foolish to think last nights tactics will be a success in the PL.
Mount isn't an 8 and we have Bruno at 10. Sancho and Eriksen already offered backup for Bruno.

Selling Fred for 10m Euro was an abysmal piece of business. He may not have been world class but he was a damn decent squad player, worked well with Casemiro and gave 100% every game.

Mainoo didn’t need to be purchased, he’s already here. Need Casemiro is stay in his area, he was all over the place v Wolves apart from where he should be defending.
Eriksen has been replaced By Mount, so no idea how we’ve not gotten his successor?
I still think we get a midfielder who adaptable and experienced last minute in the window, but we shall see. Ten Hag is being held back by the previous regime and the ridiculous contracts they gave out, hopefully lessons learned but I doubt it.

Andre Onana - 8/10 - Excellent signing and long overdue, and for a good price. I think this will be the one that influences our football the most.

Rasmus Hojlund - 7/10 - The one I'm most excited about, and I'm glad we signed him.

Mount - 3/10 - Strange transfer.

None of the transfers really bring that oomph, considering the total money spent. We are still totally reliant on Casemiro staying fit and able, and we remain short-staffed in the back. Entire right side of the pitch is still mediocre overall. Outgoings have not been good enough, but we did shift some at least. McTominay, Maguire, and Henderson remain, however.

5/10 window so far. 6/10, if we bring Amrabat, since it's one more body in the midfield. Should be a squad that makes top 5 and challenges for a cup. Not much else.

What the feck is this? No white text?

We’ve played one match. ONE game.

This place has a reputation for having some of the worst Utd fans around but I actually think there’s some good stuff posted here, by some intelligent and passionate fans.

But threads like this are :wenger:

Thanks for your considered input.

I’m not sure Mount is comparable with Fred, different players. Out of the three MF we are trying to sell I’d rather have kept Fred. Feels like the same kind of mistake we made selling Blind. Not spectacular but useful all the same.

Sort of my thinking. Mount is not a number. 8 for me, very strange signing.

I love being miserable as much as the next person.

But the over reaction to last nights game is a bit much.
This isn’t about the game itself per se, I genuinely felt positive going into the match but when Eriksen replaced Mount and we finish with McSauce upfront it just highlighted we might not be as far forward as we thought/hoped.

A single game, really.

We didn’t concede and beat a team we have had a history of struggling against for a while.

Oh come on, stop being obtuse. We ‘didn’t concede’ because they failed to convert any of their 20 chances. And were robbed of a pen.

We do have a history of struggling against them. The idea is for us to be improving so that isn’t the case, rather than to permanently accept that Wolves at home would be a struggle (and by struggle, we mean we’d be comprehensively outplayed).

We’ve done a great job improving the keeper position, but only time will tell if either Mount or Højlund really improve us.
Would really like us to bring in at least a RB and another midfielder as an option to Mount if it doesn’t click there.

Also, window makes it pretty certain that MG will be back which in footballing terms makes us much stronger in attack.

I enjoy the unintended humor of knee jerk threads like this.

Amigos, it takes time for new players to integrate into the squad. How much time I don’t know, but surely more than one match. The transfer window isn’t even closed yet. And by the way, we got the win.

Yeah. Let’s hope Hojlund does well.

It feels like a side step to me. We’ve spent a lot of money and the squad doesn’t seem much better for it.

The bench is still full of shite that should be nowhere near the starting 11 as well. Another year of mediocre performances from McTominay, Maguire and Martial a serious club would have got rid of these years ago.

We signed 3 players and our biggest signing who plays in our weakest position is injured. Of course you won't notice it that much yet. You noticed Onana, who made a difference right away. Mount might be a slow burner, might not work out, but Eriksen is a sub now rather than a starter so it's better depth at least. Pointless to complain about it when one of our 2 outfield signings is injured to start the season.

Considering how poor Antony has been I won't hold my breath on hojlund being great as I have big reservations about ten hag's ability with recruitment, people can claim that martinez was a success but you would hope so considering he already manged him at ajax and there has been a trend of leaning towards Dutch, Dutch league and ajax players and still think it's why he signed mount based mostly on how well he did in the inferior Dutch league
