Our Transfer Strategy This Summer

Didn't Carrick only sign a new contract this season? I'm 100% sure that he's going nowhere, especially with him now being a key part in our team, we don't have another player with the discipline and intelligence to sit in front of our back four and spray the ball around efficiently.

He did. But so has Sneijder if im not mistaken. New contracts usually mean better wages for the player and a stronger bargaining position for the club.

But like i said i was only speculating about how we could possibly get Modric, considering we are unlikely imo to fork out what Levy will undoubtedly demand.

By the way i agree that Carrick has filled a key position well at times this season especially in Europe, and you are right when you say we have no other like him. But my only gripe with him is that he is not the player he should be often enough. His form is unpredictable and he can lack composure and mobility when intensely pressed and this has been the case for at least a couple of seasons.

So yes he is currently a key player but i don't personally feel he is consistent enough to be considered indispensable.

To sit and observe City, Chelsea, Real and Barca sign the top talent, only to hear Gill claim we're ''loaded''?

Never suggested he would be going, but merely speculating that if we are seriously after modric, i personally cannot see us spending the £35m Levy will undoubtedly demand.

We know Redknapp is an admirer of both Carrick and Berba, so it is not inconceivable that one may be used in any potential deal. Don't forget both Carrick and Berba are now 30, and both have seriously under performed for lengthy periods over the last 2 seasons too.

So neither of these 2 players are indispensable imo.

I understand your point but I don't think we're in the business of sacrificing key players in order to bring transfer targets to the club. In any hypothetical deal, if it was a decision between money + Carrick or stumping up more cash then we are sure to do the latter in my opinion. If the fee is unreasonable we look elsewhere. Squad stability is a big part of Fergie's ethic these days.

Modric would be nice though :)

I'm sure we'll get a few million for him. We'll basically let him choose the club, but we'll ask for a small fee just like we did with Phil and Nicky. Somewhere between £2-4m.

You could well be right, but i would point out that Nicky and P. Nev combined still had nowhere near as bad an injury record as Brown, he would be a much greater risk for a club if they had to pay a fee as well as his wages.

To get a significant sum of money from sales of the players mentioned, we would have to sell all of them!

Owen, Hargreaves, VDS = £0

Obertan, Bebe = £1

Gibson, Macheda, Cleverley = £5-6m each

Carrick = £7m

Berba = 10m (max 12m)

I am certain we will sign Rodwell, probably at around £18-20m. May seem inflated, but potentially an absolute bargain.

De Gea seems the likely GK.

Hopefully, we will get an established, top quality CM, but I'm not holding my breathe.

Berba I hope he remains
Carrick will remain 100%, signed a new contract till 2014, 2 months ago

Some of the posts in this thread were funny.

Apologise for the word definite. I guess I meant definite in my view - but it should have read probable.

The only two 'surprises' I feel would be these guys:

Berbatov
Nani

I feel Berbatov wants to stay and has already proved that he can be useful in unpicking defences and scoring goals. Not convinced he'll stay though.

Of Nani - he's had lots of assists and scored a few goals. I'm not saying SAF will pack his bags for him but if Inter were saying that's the only way we coud get Schneijder SAF would have to make a decision. My feeling is that I don't find him to be a team player and as we have Valencia on the right most of the time I noticed this season that Nani towards the end of the season lacked the final ball. Was showing skills - but final ball lacking. SAF could make the decision and get someone who contributes more to the team.

He may not - who knows?

One player I left out of my original post. Adel Taraabt. SAF likes these kind of players! We'll see.

I realize A) it's summer, not January, and B) Berba is 30, but in a world where Andy Carroll is a £35M striker, and Torres cost £50M/goal scored, how is the potential golden boot winner not worth more than £12M?

Time left on his contract.

Not that I agree, and besides I expect he'll sign a new deal.

Agreed, to be honest i simply cannot believe we will spend that much money on either Modric or Sneijder, so i have never really considered them serious targets and i do in fact feel we will look elsewhere. Though i admit i am struggling to see a creative midfielder of similar quality that would fit into our current system.

Fabregas would always be my preference in an ideal world, but that is even less likely than the other two. Sahin looks like he is off to Madrid and that leaves Modric as the only other viable creative alternative who has proven effective in a 4-4-2 system.

One of the reasons Alex Ferguson is Sir Alex Ferguson, and we just post on a message board.

We will sell Kuszczak, probably around £4m, Brown at around £2m. That should pay for a new goalkeeeper if it's Stekelenburg as I expect him to cost around £5m to £7m.

Macheda could go if we find him a new club, he would cost around £6m. I think Obertan will go if we are offered what we had paid for him, i.e. £3m. Gibson could go if we buy a midfielder but I don't think there will be a midfielder on the market that would appeal to us that we could afford. If Gibson goes, it will likely be £5m. Diouf will definitely be sold, I reckon around £3m.

Berbatov could go, I have been saying for a while that I have a feeling he might be gone as he doesn't play anymore. I think he'd cost around £12m.

I think departures depend on who we want to add to our squad. If we need two or more players (beside the goalkeeper), we might be selling quite a few players. If we go after a cheaper goalkeeper in Stekelenburgm and stick to selling 4-5 players that don't play here anyway, we might go for another player, I think someone like Young.

Modric would be very expensive, possibly over £35m and I think City will definitely go for him if we make a move because he is exactly the type of midfielder they need. And we wouldn't be in a good position against them in a bidding war so I think we wouldn't push for that move. I think if we buy a midfielder, it might be someone less recognised that won't attract the richest clubs because both City and Chelsea need a creative midfielder.

Are you like, on acid?

I don't understand this logic of letting a player like Carrick go for 7M, or a prospect like Cleverley for 6M anf then going out and spending 20M on Rodwell.

Completely :wenger: if you ask me

Don't mean to harp on about it but would anyone be surprised if one or two 'big' players left?

People say there is 'no way' Ferguson would sell X....but surely, we know he WILL get rid of huge players if he see's someone else coming through or has his eye on someone else for their position....or if he falls out with them..

But our transfer history is littered with big players who get shown the door, often to the astonishment of fans at the time. If it happens this summer, would anyone be awfully shocked?

Fergie isn't really a guy for saying 'This is working well, lets leave it' - for too long.

Could Evra be on his way? Signed a new deal but form has dropped off dramatically in the last few weeks.

With Fabio (although he's been on the right recently) and Rafael coming through as potentially the 'next generation' of full-backs, would a decent offer for the 30 year old Evra, be turned own?

/Speculation

...bit harsh to do this on his birthday, but there you go.

whilst he's been injured you mean?

No chance of Paddy leaving, he's too vital for both his football and his personality.

Why do reds wanba speculate on our top players leaving the club??

Because this is the TRANSFER FORUM!!

Indeed, it is more realistic to speculate on them leaving than the other 'nobody will ever leave' attitude, that seems to fly in the face of the last 25 years of management that we've had who does, every few years, let some big-big players go.

But what else are we to speculate in the transfer forum if not transfers?

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has said the club are close to signing a new keeper to replace the retiring Edwin van der Sar.

The 40-year-old Dutchman moved to Old Trafford from Fulham in 2005.

Ajax's Maarten Stekelenburg, Atletico Madrid's David de Gea and Schalke's Manuel Neuer have all been linked.

"We know the keeper we want and are in a good position and I'm sure we can get the deal done," Gill told BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek programme.

Former Netherlands international Van der Sar has made 262 appearances for the Red Devils and helped them win four Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League, producing the decisive save from Nicolas Anelka in the penalty shootout to triumph in the final.

He also won a hat-trick of back-to-back Premier League crowns with the club between 2007 and 2009, the 2006 Carling Cup and the 2008 Fifa Club World Cup.

During the 2009-10 season, he set a new Premier League record by going 1,311 minutes without conceding a goal.

He has twice been named Europe's best goalkeeper by Uefa, has made the Premier League team of the year on two occasions and was named in the team of the tournament for Euro 2008.

"We've made the decision of who we want, we've been associated with all the top goalkeepers in Europe over the past six months, but we've known who we wanted for many months and we aim to achieve that," added Gill.

It looks as if United will miss out on Neuer after Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness announced on Sunday that an agreement has been reached for the signing of the German international.

Neuer will reportedly move to the Allianz Arena for a fee of £13m.

Gill also stated that there would be further signings at United in the close season as they look to strengthen the squad.

"We've got some major decision to make over the summer," admitted Gill.

"We've go to replace Edwin, Gary Neville has also retired, we don't know what Paul Scholes is going to do. He may well want to retire at the end of the season - though we are very much prepared and happy to offer him a further year.

"So without doubt there is going to be some activity in some key areas of the club and we have been preparing for that.

"It is not like we are going to start now - we've been preparing for that for the past 12 months and we will see what we can achieve in the summer."

Gill paid tribute to Scholes' contribution to the club and expects the midfielder to discuss his future with manager Sir Alex Ferguson in the coming weeks.

"It wouldn't surprise us if Paul retired," said Gill.

"We are enjoying the success we are having, so at the end of the season, he will have a conversation with Sir Alex about that.

"I am sure he will let us know his decision and we will respect it.

"He has been a brilliant player for many years. It is interesting that while Ryan [Giggs] got his 12th title yesterday, that was Paul's 10th.

"It shows what he has achieved for us and what an absolutely fantastic player he has been."

As well as Van der Sar, Neville and possibly Scholes, long-serving defender Wes Brown seems likely to leave, as does striker Michael Owen, whose two-year deal expires this summer.

Midfielder Owen Hargreaves is another who appeared destined for the Old Trafford exit door, although it is thought he is considering a one-year pay-as-you-play deal to remain with United.

But striker Danny Welbeck and midfielder Tom Cleverley are both expected to return from impressive loan spells at Sunderland and Wigan respectively.
----------------------

From the beeb.

De Gea, a midfielder, another midfielder OR a winger I'm guessing.

A keeper and a midfielder will surely arrive, and I'd say there is a decent chance of a winger as well

Nani? Macheda? I don't think so, unless you mean Macheda as a loan.

I think he gives a hint that they want Scholes to extend his current contract, which I think he will do and we will postpone a transfer of midfielder for another year or two, especially as Giggs has been doing very well in the middle and Carrick has retained form.

I too think we might pull something completely out of hat, if it was someone like Stekelenburg we would have sorted the deal long ago without monitoring him for twelve months, it must be someone harder to get. Reina, perhaps?

All year you've been harping on how we've got to face reality about our transfer plans the coming years like a broken record, and now you're on about getting Reina.

Yes let's sell one of the best left backs in the world because he's had a few bad games

The Observer states he might be on his way along with Nani. I hope Evra stays but at least we've got some pretty decent cover if he goes. I'd be sad to see Nani go too but Valencia has been 1st class since his return from injury. I can't see Hargreaves staying and something tells me Berba will be on his way to a German club. Can't see a player of his quality wanting to sit on the bench for another season.

Where on Earth has anyone got the idea from that Nani is going? :wenger:
