OT ticket price hikes for rest of season

Not too long ago there was a lot of online discourse sympathising with this lot cutting jobs as some sort of necessary evil rather than simple cruelty.

To think how low a bar being better than the Glazer's is and yet they're doing everything possible to prove it isn't automatic. sigh.

Again, I don't think many were sympathising with "this lot".

99.9% were critical of the job cuts. Pretty much every single one of those will be critical of these ticket price increases.

The Glazers not owning 100% of the club was celebrated briefly.

I think everyone who had protested about the Glazers for 19 years also realised that INEOS were cnuts aswell but it was "slightly" better than 100% Glazer ownership or Qatari state ownership.

Mass walkout on the 66th would send a message to the owners, yeah the money in the bank etc.. but it's not a good look for the club.

Andy Mitten has an interview with Jim Ratcliffe it'll be in the next UWS.Ticketing is brought up apparently. (He interviewed him on Thursday).

Is Jim taking any money out of the club? He’s being called greedy it if he’s not taking anything out I don’t think he is.

100% misguided in using kids ticket prices to up the turnover of the club but he’s not like the glazers at all.

To be clear though, think the ticket hike is bang out of order. Make it from marketing etc fair enough but not rinsing match going fans.

I think it’s a bit harsh to compare him to the glazers but what he did is totally wrong.

Ratcliffe will likely never see a profit on the money he's putting into the club.

Thanks to glazers, woodward and co we wasted so much money. Wasn't happy with some of the lay offs and now with that ticket price increase but missing success on the pitch hit us financialy.

how are those new ticket prices compared to the other clubs?

Just like the Glazers, he banned dividends.

Just like the Glazers, he threw 100m in to support working capital

Oh wait…

£66 for tickets is awful but there’s only so much an owner can throw in (per rules) and we can’t change sponsorship income mid-contract.

The reason stuff like that is even a consideration is how close we are to spending limits (punishments) and that’s down to the Glazers. Nothing in, tons out and non football income has plateaued.

Ah I love the Ratcliffe backers.

Seems most of these are armchair fans and not ones who actually go to matches.

But but but the alternative was those human right abusers!!!!!!!!

I'm fine with ticket price rises (they were already too expensive for me to bother with anyway) and with INEOS making the club leaner. We are going to have to spend a lot and make difficult choices to get back to winning ways. They could make tickets £150 a head and the place would sell out every week.

I’m not a Ratcliffe backer per se (stating two important facts isn’t backing… that’s lazy), just use common sense to see how bad the Glazers have left the financial position.

What would you do to avoid a financial rules punishment? You can either increase income and/or reduce costs. Which?

And I go to plenty of games thanks.

Maybe they shouldn't exploit loyalty with first this, and then the dynamic ticket prices. The way they resell returned tickets for 3x the value by calling it hospitality is criminal.

I'm worried how ridiculous the ticket prices will be when we have a new stadium. He will be charging London prices in Manchester.

Wouldn’t say I’m an adamant Radcliffe backer but to say he’s the same as the glazers after he’s put his own money in and won’t be taking any out is stupid.

I think he wants the best for the club financially, I just don’t think he’s going about it the right way.

Speaking as a match goer, directly affected as I take my 6 year old lad who I’ll need to pay an additional £40-odd per match for

It's blatantly obvious that Big Jim sees United tickets as too cheap. First thing he did was to increase them, and I reckon he'll do it again next season and we'll get yearly rises. What I don't understand is that match tickets are a drop in the ocean of our overall turnover. Even putting up tickets by a fiver would only generate an additional £380k a game, which pays Rashfords wages for 19 weeks.

The smart move would be to keep ticket prices low, and then provide more options in terms of beer, food, etc inside the ground as people will pay it.

I'm pretty sure our beer is the cheapest in any ground the PL (maybe the whole country) at £3.60 a pint - I expect that will go up too

£66 quid for adult tickets okay I can accept that kind of, but £66 for kids and OAPs that’s BS.

Going to match with 2 kids goes from £100 to £200, it’s too much for a lot or families I’d imagine.

The new stadium will need to be paid somehow.

Then people won't buy the tickets and the club will have to reduce prices.

People will buy the tickets and complain. Then they'll let off flares, use choice phrases like c*** around children and sit back down again.

I know INEOS are in charge of the sporting side, are the actually responsible for setting the ticket prices?

Genuine question because I've no idea

Just had an email through regarding the FA Cup draw and they’ve tagged a bit in about tickets:

Price changes
As a club, we have been focussed on cost-saving to put us on a stronger financial footing. This means having to make very hard decisions, including a significant reduction in our staff numbers. It also means looking for opportunities to increase our revenues so we can continue to invest in football and infrastructure. We have now sold over 97% of tickets this season, many of which were at a discounted rate. We are implementing some policy changes for matches that have already sold-out, where only small numbers of tickets will be released.

What is affected:
Final sales of Premier League games that are currently sold out (including cancelled Season Ticket holder tickets) will be at adult, Category A pricing of £66. The 25% discount applied for UEFA Europa League games and Carabao Cup semi-final games so far this season will not be offered for future rounds.

What isn't affected:
  • Season Ticket holders forwarding their tickets to other supporters (of which around 13,000 per game are distributed on average).
  • The 97% of available tickets for confirmed matches that have already been sold, with five age related discounts applied.
  • Tickets allocated in the ballots for the games against Arsenal and Manchester City.
  • Future cup games (FA Cup, Carabao Cup semi-final and any knock-out round UEFA Europa League games) will have all discounts available.
  • However, the 25% discount for future UEFA Europa League games and potential Carabao Cup semi-final will be removed for fans other than Season Ticket holders opted-in to the competition, and Cup Season Ticket holders.

Wow. Rapidly going off this club I love. Absolutely dreadful PR and a disgrace to not offer concessions (3% unsold or not). What is the position on Accessibility Ticketing?

As a lowly ‘member’ I attend games where I can. I would say the majority of working class supporters do have a ceiling price they are willing to pay, particularly with the ever increasing cost of living. Anything over £70+ for 90 minutes entertainment (or lack of in recent times) would probably make me think twice, perhaps not on affordability but more on common sense grounds with a family to feed. I get others may be willing to pay well over £100 for a ticket.

Once this is in, that’s it. Like supermarket pricing, eating out, beer etc - it will only ever increase.

In not raising standard prices for a long while in line with inflation and now, rather than small incremental increases, this is now hitting hard (with the exception of the direction of concessions which is a standalone disgrace).

What next, increasing season ticket waiting deposit to £500? I only paid £100 quite a while ago.

It appears INEOS don’t particularly care who or how loyal the match day attending supporters are, as long as they can pay for it.

Too many fans across all clubs buy into that nonsense.

Clubs across the league are routinely spending hundreds of millions every summer. Why should the fans he forced into spending more money to cover a few % of that?

On a wider point, that email is way too confusing.

It’s not just that. I’d put my mortgage on the fact that those willing to pay the £100+ would be tourists or people that absolutely would add to the atmosphere.

I know many have joked for years we’re a plastic club due to our commercial success and foreign support but I think if it was a permanent hike, along with more padded seats and meals before the game the soul of the club would be lost inside that stadium.

I’d love to see them fleece everybody but the fans. The corporates that want to look good to clients, the football tour holidays, the sponsors that want to be associated with the club to push their own turnovers - fleece them.

What often goes under reported in these debates is what makes football (and other sports) in Europe and South America different from say the NFL and NBA in the States is the atmosphere. That's what ultimately attracts the tourists and sponsors in the first place. This is unlike those American sports where the fanbases and customers are very different. That's why clubs went hard on the whole "football without fans" narrative during lockdown.

If you remove that passion from the terraces, there's not a lot left. Clubs will find out the hard way that the tourists and the sponsors will spend their money elsewhere if they're not enjoying the whole package.

This is just bollocks frankly. If all tickets in the ground were £150 it would sell out five times a year, if that.

Nice to see they’ve snuck in the removal of 25% reductions in the EL and EFL cup after that round too.

Not having this “new stadium needs to be paid for”

Just get a sponsor deal for the vast majority of the cost. No one wants OT renamed, but if we get a new stadium, no one will give a feck what it’s called

A sponsor deal would maybe bring in £300m over 20 years or so, look at what stadium naming rights go for. This project will cost £2bn ffs.

The mention of *category A pricing* caught my eye.

So that's what we are going to see next season then.

£66 standard price for category A which will be the obvious and probably include stuff like Spurs at home

Category C no doubt the BARGAIN price of £45 which was the fecking face value for all games until now.

Ye I noticed that too - we have done well to hold out this long as being the only club with one price category

I'm not sure where the £66 even comes from though, is it the price of a South Stand members ticket nowadays ?

I mentioned this up thread - they pretend to give with one hand (making out concessions are still in place for cups) but take with the other

MUST Statement

Being discussed in ticket thread but merits its own thread. To me this seems like a disgraceful decision. Also insanely short sighted. The average age of local match-going fans is going up and up. How does the next generation get hooked if their parents have to play adult prices for them to attend?!

Is there any precedent at any other club?
Well over 6x more expensive as a proportion of average salary compared to when I first started going regularly as a kid in the 70's. I'd guess many things have got cheaper in those terms and although lots has gone up e.g. beer in a pub (up by about 1.7 x) mostly by far far less.
