There are two big issues in the transfer window:
1) if Rooney goes and we don't bring in a top class player to replace him we will lack depth of quality, that much is crystal clear and not up for debate. If RVP got injured I would have real concerns of where the goals would come from. Hernandez would chip in, Welbeck would bring build up play, but have limited confidence in his ability to bring goals.
Kagawa could be a solid option alongside Hernandez, but that would be quite a light weight option. If Rooney goes we would need a strong striker to replace him. Rooney may not be the tallest, but he is strong and can control the tempo well in the final 3rd.
2) We might not actually need any transfers, but that leads us to problem number 2, lack of experience for some of the youngsters. We have plenty of talent that could step up, but the reality is they probably need more time to get to the levels required these days. The chance to get used to the tempo of the Premiership is becoming harder and harder to do.We can't afford passengers who are not ready.
That being said we really need to find time to use the likes of Lingard and Januzaj (we really need an easier name for him, how about AJ!), otherwise they'll join the likes of Pogba and Morrison as lost talent. Morrison of course is a special case, because he threw away his opportunity. Pogba simply should have been given games. We were in desperate need for a quality midfielder and there staring us in the face was exactly what we wanted. I'm sure Ferguson wanted to show that no one is bigger than the team, but I can't help but feel this was not the time to do that!
Buttner is another on on the fringes who looks almost ready and I have faith will become a fantastic player. He has similar raw attributes to Evra when he first arrived, but if anything seems to have an extra edge from his aggression and extremely hard working attitude.
And what about Powell, I'm concerned about his development. Lots of positive talk when he arrived, but not much seems to be happening there. His mentality seems fine, but maybe his strength and work rate are not what we need it to be.
And of course, there is the much talked about Petrucci. Another widely talked about, but doesn't seem to be making the break through yet.
Finally, how about Tunniclife. They hype on him seems to have cooled, but he is still doing a solid job for the reserves. He and Petrucci both scored for the u21s at the weekend.
We have plenty of youth, but are any good enough, or ready enough. Certainly if we compare to Thiago, I think the overwhelming opinion would be no, but you have to start some where and Thiago got the few chances that have accelerated his status and development.
