Not a good start for GB.

Gold - Silver - Brown

Things can only go up from here. Hope that wee kid in the Dive and splash wins a medal

Do the Irish have a team...?

Have they introduced the 'throwing a metal ball down a country road as fast as feck' event yet...?

feck off!
Ireland has a team but road bowls is not an Olympic sport - yet.
now, if they had drinking contests followed by singing and fighting we'd be in with a shout ;)

We might get some medals but seeing as I'm in the US I won't get to see it on the telly. They'll be too busy generally with their freakin feel good stories when they could be showing actual Olympic moments featuring non Americans.
Betchya they won't do a decent good story about Tibet though. can't go upsetting the Chinese.

You'll do well in the next winter ones

I'm not much of a winter olympics guy... come to think of it I'm not much of a summer olympics guy either, but what do the Canadians excel in aside from Hockey?

Curling

Australia are 6th on the list or equal 3rd if ranked by total number of medals but Channel 7 have gone one better qand adjusted the medal chart for population whiich puts Australia way out in front

the Yanks will do fine, they always do. there's a bunch of medals to be had in the sprint races. they won't have it all their own way but they should get some.

the Aussies are doing well also. for a small population they consistently beat the likes of GB in the gold medal haul, not sure why that is - better facilities, better coaches, better attitude?

Come on yanks. I don't want China to top the list.

I've come to realize that not all gold medals are equal. Consider what the medal table actually represents. There are 5 golds in badminton, 5 in table tennis, and rowing will hand out 14, yet the two most popular team sports in the world, association football and basketball, combine for 4 total. Factor in some other fun, but truely insignificant multi gold "disciplines" like kayaking and shooting and ask if winning there is as significant as the 100m sprint in track (by itself). If countries (and athletes) want to spend millions pursuing gold medals in events no one really cares about or participates in, fine. If China considers it vital to take 4 year olds and invest a fortunes in their training so that they can fall off 10 meter platforms and land head first in the water (while a large portion of the population is starving, living in substandard housing, or deprived of medical care) that's their decision, no matter how stupid.

Apparently we're is going to win 85 golds this weekend or summink. If we don't meet the target then it's all Gordon Brown's fault.

and even in hockey you weren't much opposition in Torino :)

It is India or no other Asian country for me. Come on Yanks and Russians.

I'm worried the Yanks aren't going to be able to close the gap with China.

The Chinese will continue to get a steady stream of golds from pointless sports whereas the US will need to dominate the Athletics to get close to them. The US already missed out on the Mens Shot today and it seems unlikely they'll get gold in the 100 & 200 mens as well as the 100m women.

The swimming is nearly finished, though there are still probably five golds available to the US.

They don't look as though they can dominate other sports which they'll need to do to catch the chinese. It just looks like sporadic success in the other events to me, what do others think? Where can the US close the gap?

Women's beach volleyball, arent there individual gymnast medals per event, although that would probably be a wash with China

Phelps has more golds than all but 3 countries

As far as us brits are concerned I reckon the rowers will bring home a lot of medals but unfortunately not many will be gold ones. The track cycling team on the other hand should provide a gold rush. They'll be a couple of golds in the sailing, one or two in the athletics and Ardlington in the swimming pool.

I think we'll end up with 15 gold medals.
