Is Ole a good appointment?

Cardiff had spent a lot, extremely poorly in the summer between their promotion and the start of the Premier League season. The atmosphere in the club then turned toxic incredibly quickly, with McKay's dismissal and racism scandal, and widespread rumours of interference in footballing matters from the owners.

Solskjaer was brought in after the January window had opened, given no time to evaluate the squad, but then tasked with sorting the team out on a shoestring budget. Ultimately, they weren't good enough when they were promoted, didn't sign the necessary quality to improve enough before the season, then imploded somewhat mid-season, leaving whoever came in next with an almost impossible task.

After they were relegated, they lost a lot of players, and he basically had to rebuild the entire squad, but with a fraction of the transfer budget McKay had been afforded the summer before.

At the start of the next season, they won two of their first three games, drawing the other, but then went four games without a win, losing three and drawing one. Solskjaer was then sacked, just 7 games into a 46 game season. However, the three games he lost were to Norwich, who finished four points off the winners in third, and won the playoffs, Middlesbrough, who finished just a point behind Norwich, and Wolves, who missed out on the playoffs on goal difference, finishing level on points with both Brentford and Ipswich, who rounded out the other playoff teams behind Middlesbrough. All were strong sides, and they lost two of the games by a single goal. Later in the season, after he'd been sacked, they went on a run of thirteen games with only one win, losing six of them. They were just a poor side expecting far too much, far too quickly.
It's almost like you're suggesting a bit of balance and that his doomed spell at Cardiff isn't his whole management career.

Will he be given money to spend in January? If not we'll only fall further behind the other clubs.

Reasons why Solskjaer would win the Champions League for Manchester United this season:

- Champions League Final in 2019 would be held on June 1st. Who else but the "baby-faced" assasin would celebrate on that day?
- After 20 years from the glorious 1999 treble, the player with jersey 20 of that year would win the Champions League again for Manchester United.
- The last 3 Champions League trophies were won by a coach who scored the winner in a Champions League final.

Come on, guys! It's written in the stars!

Cheers!

I read somewhere that he would get around £50m to spend on players in January, but I don't have any sources on this right now.

Reasons why Solskjaer would NOT win the Champions League for Manchester United this season:

1. Lingard
2. Young
3. Lukaku
4. Lindelof
5. Fellaini
6. Smalling
7. Matic
8. Sanchez

Jesus. Even a tiny bit of harmless hope and optimism is shot down quickly on here.

Wow it feels good to have inner peace. Not felt it for past 5 years.

It would be strange to give money to a temporary manager though. What if the players he buys do not suit the playing style of the new permanent manager? Think that’s where we need a DOF with a clear philosophy on the type of player we should be targeting who will fit with the type of manager we want.

Although wonderkids should be an exception. Just get them if available.

Promote this man/woman.

Is he straight in on Saturday or will Carrick take charge of that? This may have been asked numerous times already but it's a big thread!

I'm baffled at the idea that the board has been so generous as to offer £50m for Ole to go get Costa AND Toby. Either of them would probably cost over that, especially half way through a season.

Signing of OGS to manage United must be one of the most craziest signings in football. . . . As mad as Moyes.

Conspiracy Theory: Ole was hired knowing that they can easily replace him with Poch/Zidane even if Ole does pretty well. If they'd hired someone of higher caliber it could be harder to see them off once they find someone new.

Not a conspiracy at all its fact... all parties know this is a temporary measure.

He will take charge on Saturday and training tomorrow.

Love the guy affectionately. But i sincerely hope he will not be out of his depth here. It's really vital though that we bring the feel good factor back to the club first and Ole can do that

@Marcelinho87 It's already been made clear that the option of keeping Ole on if he does well is there. I doubt it will happen but it's there all the same. The conspiracy would be that they intentionally avoided hiring a higher caliber manager because they didn't want us to do so well that we couldn't sack them. It's a stupid theory but I'm sure someone out there will love it ;)

Personally I hope he does very well.

That's literal fact. He's interim manager.

To be fair creating a siege mentality was one of Fergie’s strengths, Jose just did it terribly.
The difference is Fergie laid siege to his opponents, while Mourinho laid siege to our own goal.

I can see why your name is what it is.

Already touted as the new permanent manager before a ball has even been kicked.

This terrifies me.

Indeed. Glazers dream ticket - appeased fans, lowered expectations and a manager who's simply grateful to be here and won't demand anything.

It's really difficult because I absolutely love the guy and want him to do well, but I'm very wary of him doing just well enough to get given the job, we miss out on Pochettino and the cycle continues.

The current board just can't make normal decisions that are befitting of a huge club.

BBC now going with this...

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Man Utd's interim boss has shot at full-time role

Guys, stop creating conspiracy theories  We got rid of Jose because he was damaging the club image, our best players were not willing to extend their contracts and I can bet sponsors were unhappy as well with all the negativity surrounding the club. The manager we want is not available until summer hence why we chose Solskjaer who is respected by everyone, likes attacking football and done a good job at Molde. He is here for 6 months only while Ed tries to sort out the mess (appoint a DoF, convince the likes of De Gea, Martial to sign new contracts etc), then we hire a permanent manager. Why is it so difficult to understand for some of you?

As mad as Di Matteo to Chelsea?

Well he won't win a CL with United. . . . But the signing of OGS (who relegated Cardiff) tells me that United have given up on 4th place.

Sure it's unlikely but there's 21 matches left.

That's most posts in the FF man.

Jeysus the state of people in here. Give the guy a chance to see how he does. If he does very well then why feck wouldn't he be considered? :wenger:

Appointing a legend to your club simply because he's a legend is not the way to run a football club. OGS has managed in the Premier League. His results are there for all to see.

PS - Quit making excuses for OGS for the fact that it was Cardiff

 Its bizarre, people are worried he will do well and be kept on. Bizarre logic.

I think we all should be much more worried that he won't do well. As I said earlier I think its crazy to land him with the xmas fixtures, if things go wrong for him they could go wrong pretty quickly.

Look fellas, we just got rid of a pathological virus. We need to build in time to rest and heal. After such an ordeal, to expect someone to scale Mt. Everest is a bit mental.

I’m happy for him to just reinstall the values of the club into the squad, play some attacking football and show some promise. Given our league position, making the top 4 would be an incredible accomplishment.

I think the main concern is that standards are very, very low right now, and it would be easy, given the emotional and sentimental nature of the appointment to make a decision that wasn't best for the club - as happened when Fergie retired.

We've got history with this as a fanbase, and have an utterly incompetent board footballing wise, and owners who are proven to be happy to get top 4 while City and Liverpool aim for the top.

We're a club in flux, our football is discordant and our rivals are becoming very strong... yet we're talking, already, about giving the manager of Molde, who's only PL experience was relegating Cardiff, the job fulltime if he can just play some good football in a season 'that is already over'.

If this guy wasn't Ole, the utter insanity of the situation would be plain to see.

With Moyes - if Fergie hadn't retired and then suggested him, the utter insanity of the appointment would've been plain to everyone.

Not sure why people are moaning. We cannot lose out from this arrangement. If things go south, well they already were under Jose and quickly too. In that case we don't hire him permanently. If he does well, bodes well for us. How can we possibly not call this a win-win?

If OGS starts losing matches Mourinho will get blamed.
