Is Ole a good appointment?

I am hopeful for Ole and Phelan, the positive attitude and buzz around Old Trafford should lift the whole team and bring sone short term stability to the club

It's 11 points and our GD is 0, Spurs +15 and Chelsea +21. It's possible if we go on a crazy record-breaking run, but no club has managed to close a gap so wide in December to break into top 4.

Now that Poch has his sights on joining us Spurs will fall to pieces. Then we only need to close the 8 points on Arsenal. Simples.

That’s part of the problem, I love ole but fear this will tarnish his reputation at the club. He is not qualified for this job in any shape or form. Personally I would have gone for Conte, given him a 6 month contract with a view to making it permanent if successful and approved by the new DOF (if this is true or not that’s what I would have said).

I am going to leave it here and look forward to Saturday when I will be 100% behind Ole and the team.
Conte was never coming "on trial".

To be honest, not a manager I'd want anyway.

Heard a few people slating the appointment but I don't get why.

It was never going to be one of the current breed of super coaches because they're only interested in permanent roles and most if not all of them are taken.

We're too close to the January transfer window to throw someone in now because there's no time to plan with it being less than 2 weeks away.

Best thing is to put someone in who knows the club, doesn't really matter who it is - at least OGS has some experience of management. He doesn't have to do much to galvanise the club again and there is no pressure on him because he will be gone again in May no matter what.

The only downside to a temporary appointment is potential complacency with the players as some of them may feel they have no real need to impress the new manager, but they should all feel that they are playing for their futures under whoever takes over in the summer.

This is such a bizarre appointment that it's genuinely impossible to work out how it will go.

His Premier League record is atrocious and he could seriously damage what little resilience and quality is left in your side, but the reverse is that he could be something of a soft touch the players need to play to their full potential - and with Phelan back in the dugout De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Fellaini and Mata could have something of a confidence boost.

United aren't a club in a position to throw everything on a coin toss, though, and that's exactly what they've done.

How is it though? We were playing shite and the players were miserable to boot. No one expects Ole to get us top 4 or win the CL. No manager in the world could turn around this season for us coming in in December. The advantage of Ole is having a guy who is hugely respected in the club and all of the players now that his status here means that they won't be able to turn fans against him. Short of getting us relegated the season has already been ruined and Ole may at least bring back a feel good factor and positivity in our players. Every fan would be more than happy with a 6th place finish while playing more adventurous football, anything else is out of our hands.

His Premier League record is atrocious with a shite team. Would Pep have done better at Cardiff, is Klopp atrocious for the position he left Dortmund in? These guys are far better than Ole too. I think this is first good decision made by the club as long as they follow through on the promises. Firstly get a good DOF in asap and allow him to analyse the players and start making a plan. Allow that DOF have a say in who is the next manager. Hopefully have a sure choice sorted for before the end if the season so that proper plans for the summer can be made.

Ole knows that he is here in the interim. If he does well it helps his reputation, if not his rep doesn't take that much of a hit among the clubs that would hire him. Can you name any manager that you think would have accepted an interim role while stepping into a club who's season is effectively wrecked anyway? What constitutes a disaster for you? We were already sliding under Jose, I don't think we are shite enough to finish outside of the top 8 and that's what we have been on course for anyway.

Basically it would be great to get a more proven name but they would never accept an interim contract and that would leave us with a new manager without a DOF again. You guys sorted out these positions in advance of Pep, it's time for us to do the same now. Also for example if Mitchell is considered good for the role then having him may make it easier to tempt Poch. Same applies to other combinations that have worked well together before.

I think it's a good appointment. It's Interim, all parties agree on this, and he will be an enthusiastic face to have around the club and players. I think it's a good thing for the club until the end of the season. Let's see ho he goes, because he is inheriting a bunch of players who are feeling pretty sorry for themselves.

I do have a little concern, and that is how he will manage the big players there.. has he ever done this? What will his relationship be? I do hope he lays down the law, and f***s off anyone who still wants to sulk etc. Will a Solksjaer/Phelan ticket get those guys respecting the club, shirt, fans etc? I really, really, really hope they will. But we just have to wait and see.

But he will be judged as to whether he can get more out of those players. That's what I want to see.

This all good talks, but the reality is this guy has zero experience of this level and have already proved his incompetence here at the PL, to reward him with a post at the biggest club in England when he has been a failure at a small club like Cardiff is just bizarre for me. His Cardiff team didn't play a good style of football to convince me that it was a board problem that he failed there, they were just not good, from players to manager.

The bold sounds like a deja vu for me; too similar to what people were saying after Moyes and Mourinho appointment. I get it people are excited with idea of having an ex legend as a manager, but ffs people sentimentalism will bring us nowhere.

I have questions for people who are happy with this appointment: what's his playing style? what's his managerial style? if he was such a good appointment, why has he never been linked with another top 4 club in any top 5 leagues in Europe? why did he failed so miserably at Cardiff? do you think being good for a nothing club like Moldes is reason enough to be appointed as manager of the biggest club in the world? What happened if he has us fighting relegation within 2 months?
Good Lord.

To answer your completely illogical ramblings:

His managerial style is much like Fergies, in fact I would describe it as very, very good. When he first went to molde there was a record if poor discipline within the club with he rectified immediately.

Why hasnt he been linked with other clubs? That's a question that you have to ask the board at other clubs. Not our problem.

I think the Cardiff job was too early for him, plus as already stated the club was in the middle of a civil war and the owner had alienated everybody included players and fans, he then took over with the club in serious trouble. Literally ANY manager would have failed there. Besides which, every manager had to fail at least once in order to grow and develop. Just ask Brian cough and Leeds.

A nothing club like Molde? Grow up mate stop being do elitist.

Fighting relegation? In February no less.

Log off mate.

Bit of a low risk trail for Ole through the rest of the season. The season has already been written off, so the pressure is right off. But it gives us a chance to assess Ole, and can then either let him continue, or look at other options. Either way we have a long time to make sure we get the next appointment right.

I haven't felt this excited to a Man Utd match in years. Must be the real Sir Alex connection (not like the Moyes one). And the fact that we've got Phelan back I think will help the club massively, at least domestically.

Well said, couldn’t agree more!

The stock market reacted positively to Jose Mourinho's dismissal on Tuesday with Manchester United’s value increasing by £170m

I'm quietly excited about this. I don't think it can hurt his reputation at the club no matter how he does tbh. His personality will keep both players and fans on his side even if things go bad. He will not make this about himself in any shape or form, but I'm sure the fans and media will (at least in the beginning). I think I'm mostly excited about Mike being back as an assistant though. Think that could be key to this working out.

I can't possibly see how it'll end up as a permanent deal, but I assume it's a possibility. So what happens if he does amazing in these 6 months? Will we not already have searched for, and probably made a deal with, a permanent replacement? Will we just kick Ole out then? Or will we break a possible deal with another (bigger name) manager because Ole did well? Are we going to wait with that process until Ole gets a chance to prove himself? Will that not be to late again? I just don't see how hiring someone that can potentially become permanent, while still hunting for bigger names, is a good solution. To many issues imo.

But I'm still quietly excited about the rest of the season now. Added bonus that Molde lose him as I'm a Rosenborg fan.

The season is almost a write off anyway, I'd take Ole getting us turned around and playing attacking football with the players enjoying their football again, without fear of criticism for trying things that won't always come off, and no Rashford and Martial having to track fullbacks all the way back to our own goal line.

I just want him to get us moving towards recapturing some sort of identity and style, I think Phelans appointment could be significant in that, at least I hope so, it could all just be nostalgia for what once was, but surely they can't do worse than Mourinho in terms of our brand of football.

Can they?

It's definitely a strange appt, but the alternative was to continue with Jose and the toxic atmosphere that was prevalent which I don't think was an option. It's like we are hoping to restore some of the Fergie glory with Ole and Phelan. That will remove the toxic nature for sure, but ability wise we are a long way off. We've tried strong willed characters in Moyes, LVG and Jose and it hasn't worked. I feel Ole would be more modern in his man management skills, more clam and collected in his thoughts. At the very least you'd imagine he will try and play a more appealing type of football. You don't mind losing to City and Liverpool if you at the very least give it a go. Klopp been at Liverpool longer, he's won feck all, but he has a style of play where they try to win and people can see what he's trying to build. With Jose, we never had that, let's hope Ole can give us something to smile about about.

Same. With the other managers I was always just half wishing they'd be sacked and feck off because I never felt any of them belonged here. I never wanted any of them as manager. They were obviously bad fits for the club and it was difficult to get excited about a future under any of them. Who really wanted to settle into a future of 3rd place finishes and boring football?

This is different. Ole lives for the club and knows how we should play. I want him to show the likes of Pochettino what could be possible here. Every fibre of my being wants it to go well. Every point we win will mean everything.

It's the most excited I've been since SAF left if I'm being honest.

He’s made me very excited about our football and upcoming game which is enough for me at this point

I have to admit I'm concerned. Fergie choosing another manager based on sentiment, one with little pedigree and a reputation for being a very poor defensive organiser. What could go wrong?

Getting more and more excited for this.

I doubt we'll win any trophies or qualify for the CL this year but feck it, if the players look like they're enjoying themselves playing for the world's biggest club again, then I'm all sorted for this year.

I am cautiosly optimistic with his appointment.

The club after Moyes, have tried the reputable, experienced approach, including Moyes even if he was the one that started the so called demise of the club.

Moyes managed in the EPL for number of years, with mixed success. LvG won the UCL and other major trophies with some of the major clubs, managing some of the biggest ego in the game. Jose, you get the picture by now.

My point is that the club had tried the reputable, experienced, big name route, more than once already with mixed results. Attracted some of the game big names, won a few cups but not quite there yet. The team just regressed badly and ruptured relationships. As it only interim job, I have to applaud Ed, and the club, to at least try the other route. Someone who knows and loves the club, inside out, and have some experiences managing football clubs and players, in different leagues. Plus, he might the only available options for now, who knows? I cant wait for the next game now.

Great news to see it confirmed. I don't understand the complaints tbh, it's a free hit at this stage. We're not expected to make top 4 or progress through the champions league, so anything achieved at this stage is a bonus. The FA Cup has yet to begin for us. All he has to do is remove the dark cloud surrounding the club by bringing a bit of positivity to role. Both as a person, but also importantly in our play-style. Mending our broken dressing room will be his other major job, but these are thing he's surely capable of. He comes with goodwill from fans that remember and appreciate what he did for us as a player, and match-going fans will react very positively. His job is to get us to a position where he can hand over the team to the new permanent manager in a much better place than it is now. And to allow the board time to make a the right choice on the new manager/structure of the club. Of course on his record alone, it wouldn't suggest he'd be in the for the full time job, but that's why he's an interim manager!

Feck defense for the rest of this year. If every game is a 5-4 to us till the end of the season, I'm in.

What does he need to do to get the job full time? Top 4? Win a cup?
It'd depend on whether or not we could get our first choice and how good that first choice is. He'd had have to show something exceptional, winning the CL should do it ;)

Why does Ole have to win the CL to get the job but not Pochettino? Equality, and all that...

Season was over a few weeks ago. Don't think we would have reached top 4 anyway. So a change is good and to see a United legend back to lead the club is a welcoming sight. Mike Phelan will help steady the ship. I thought he was dismissed prematurely which rocked the ship. Glad to have him back too.
